Aibu to just buy a man's coat?

Am over weight.

Sick of women's coats being tight.

I want some room and I want a longer coat, I like my thighs being covered.

Should I just buy a blokes coat? It's not like I have a figure to show off. (5ft5 and 16st)

ASpringerEspanya · 16/08/2018 22:30

I'm trying to lose weight. And I'm planning on walking A lot. I don't even have a winter coat but I'm sick of them.now zipping.

I have skinny legs and all my weight on my tum.

DD prefers a man’s coat because she is tall and has a passion for deep pockets. At your height, a good height for a woman, unless you have very wide shoulders you might need a wonan’s coat, sorry about the mean pockets you will probably get....

ASpringerEspanya · 16/08/2018 22:42

I just want a nice roomy parka :(

What dress are you wearing? I'm a 22-24, and can assure you there are clothes out there for you!

ASpringerEspanya · 16/08/2018 23:28

I just ordered this, they only had a 2xl but it's a good incentive to loose a few lbs before it gets cold.

I find men’s clothes only really work on very thin, straight up/ down women without much shape. If you have hips and a bust men’s clothes are not cut for that.

Justgivemesomepeace · 17/08/2018 06:27

Men's coats won't go round my bum and are big everywhere else. I can't fasten dp's coats because my hips/bum are too big. Men are just a different shape so the clothes are cut differently.

Katescurios · 17/08/2018 06:28

I m 5foot 8 and a size 22, got a great parka from sainsburys last year. Hits at mid thigh, lovely and warm, with nice deep pockets.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 17/08/2018 08:39

Buy what you want, love. Seriously, it’s up to you. Personally, I’d stay with women’s and spend as much as I could allow and do lots of trying on.

desperatehousewife21 · 17/08/2018 09:03

I’ve just started a thread asking this for a denim jacket (opinions welcome!) so my answer is go for it!

Skittlesandbeer · 17/08/2018 09:12

If I were you, I’d think about getting a coat made or buying an oversized men’s one and having a seamstress tailor it to your figure. You’re going to be wearing it a lot, you might find the cost isn’t all that much per wear.

abbsisspartacus · 17/08/2018 09:14

Buy one and nip it in at the waist

YouWereRight · 17/08/2018 09:15

A mans coat will be straight up and down, with no shaping for your boobs, or bum. The shoulders will also be wider. So it might just smoosh your tits down and be uncomfortable there.

GooodMythicalMorning · 17/08/2018 09:21

My mens surfanic coat is one of my best buys. Its thicker so cosy and warm and it looks nice! Ive had loads pf compliments on it. Only downside is I need to rewaterproof it as ive had it so long.

argumentativefeminist · 17/08/2018 09:23

Look in Primark! They go up to a 22 and sometimes 24.

GreenTulips · 17/08/2018 10:16

I'm a size 10 and always buy a size 16 coat as they are cut for being naked underneath! If you add layers they become tight and annoying.

I've had several men's coast and offer steal DHs for walks - they are longer and warmer than women's coats and yes to deeper pockets

I don't see a problem and coats a coat - when you are stool on a school field or walking the dog - style is irrelevant!

Buy whatever coat you feel comfortable in

You're bored of too-tight coats..... So you just bought another too-tight coat but this one is from the men's department? [hmmm]

ASpringerEspanya · 17/08/2018 10:37

It's not from the men's department. It's a women's coat. They didn't have it in 3xl. So I got 2xl. If it's tight it can be the kick up the bum I need to lose weight

Don’t know about parkas but a couple of the nicest coats I’ve ever had came from the men’s section of a vintage shop and a different vintage market. Beautifully tailored, 100% wool tweed. Not charity shop prices - but a fraction of the price one would pay for new, women’s clothing of that quality. With more pockets, better buttons ... Just perfect.

BagelGoesWalking · 17/08/2018 11:07

Have a look at this brand. I got one of their parkas last year (via eBay) and it's lovely. www.romanoriginals.co.uk/quilted-parka-10600bla

Laska5772 · 17/08/2018 11:10

I recently bought this citron parka from Seasalt its lovely and roomy (and a great price) .

Branleuse · 17/08/2018 11:18

I cant fit in mens clothes. Theyre cut wrong. Shoulders are too wide and hips too narrow.
I hope you find what youre after

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 17/08/2018 11:43

That's a nice parka. Looks warm and cosy too!

Laska5772 · 17/08/2018 12:14

If you mean the Seasalt one I linked to archbishop , its not lined or really heavyweight but big enough for layers underneath ( which i prefer anyway ) .Definitely windproof and waterproof , (I had it on in a gale last week) . A good length also .

The Kelliway ( if they still have that in the sale ) is thicker , but I thought a much slimmer fit ,( too slim for my norkage! )
