A lot of my tops are coming out with little holes

About 2 or 3 years ago, I noticed in some of my tops/tshirts, under the arms, tiny little holes came about. They were every day wear tops and were quite old at that stage. Considering the location of the holes, I hung onto the tops until the holes became bigger and came to an end.

Recently, a lot of my tshirts are comt out in similar type of holes. This time, they are not old tshirts, many of them are 2/3 months old. The holes are in a new place too - in and around my belly button. I have 5 tops that I've noticed these little holes in, so far.

Has anyone else experienced similar holes in their clothes? Any idea what may be causing them?

Do you wear a belt? Or jeans with a big button? They can cause the ones at the belly button.

Washing machine can do the others.

This is a picture of the top I'm wearing today

Ah ok they kook more like washing machine holes.

Clothes moths!
Check your wardrobe

BruceAndNosh · 14/08/2018 09:48

If you usually wear these with jeans, could be the top edge by button that is wearing them.
Or if you sit at a desk, a rough edge.
I've never had a top wear a hole at my waist

BWrose · 14/08/2018 09:48

I have one belt and some jeans but I very rarely wear them. I prefer looser pants/leggings.

The long body strap on my handbag broke in recent months. The bag has smaller straps and I've taken to carrying my handbag Victoria Beckham style. My arm goes into the straps and the bag hangs of my arm and would hang down by the belly. Maybe it's that, that could be causing it.

Obviously first rule out clothes moths and other possible cause of wear and tear.

I get these tiny holes rarely in some jersey-type tops. I fix them with a fine needle and thread, but you can get iron on patches a little like hemming tape, to iron on to the reverse of the fabric.

Nebularin · 14/08/2018 10:01

In fact hemming tape might do. Obviously push the hole together first before application and ironing.

Clothes moths usually the culprit

MoltonSilver · 14/08/2018 10:20

It's a common problem and the internet is awash with theories as to what causes it. Thin fabric, belts, seat belts, granite worktops are a few suggestions I've come across. Often they are only on the front of tops and roughly at waist level. If they are everywhere then moths could be the cause but it's unlikely that clothes moths would be so specific as to pick the same spot on every top. I have one belt that definitely speeds up the appearance of holes but it still happens since I stopped using the belt.

I got these recently. Found out it was because I was catching the material in my jacket, which has a zip.

hippoherostandinghere · 14/08/2018 10:31

I bought 3 new cotton t shirts from H&M a few months back and all of them now have these holes around the belly button area. No idea why but it's very annoying.

funmummy48 · 14/08/2018 10:32

It's the belly button monster. Seriously, we all suffer from this in our house, even though we don't wear belts. It even happens with pyjama tops, tiny holes appear around the belly button area. 😯

Alabasterangel6 · 14/08/2018 10:35

Some fabrics are the culprit too. I personally find the lovely, peached feel jersey does it more. White stuff are a bugger for it. And supremely unhelpful too. I emailed them about a 3 week old £35 top which went into two holes and got a ‘tough luck’ response!

As per PP you can google it for hours, it’s such a common thing with loads of theories.

I stopped my own belly holes by wearing pull on jeggings with no buttons or the sharp rough corner where the button hole is. And not leaning on the kitchen counter for hours when I cook (which is exactly where the button hole was) but others have their own ideas.

cantstandmenow · 14/08/2018 14:30

I get these around my bellybutton! I think hope it's where I lean right up against my desk at work, plus rub on my jeans. But it has taken me a couple of years to work that out!

Rattymare · 14/08/2018 15:55

I get these little holes just around the tummy area too. Only on soft t-shirts, I thought it was moths but then they obviously wouldn't be choosing that specific area - I'm wondering now if its my kitchen granite worktop causing it.

BWrose · 14/08/2018 17:26

I suspect too it could be the kitchen worktop. All these tops of mine getting holes are soft/light cotton. It's not happening on other cotton tops where I have them more for going out/fancy wear.

Surely moths wouldn't pick and choose exactly the same spot/area to eat some holes into clothes.

I'm a childminder and often when I arrive for the family I work for, there's an avalanche of pure shite built up upon the work tops for me to sort out - crockery, crockery filled with half eaten food, mugs with half tea/coffee in them, cutlery, pots, pans, other tablewear, empty sweetie wrappers, the works. It can take me the guts of 30-40 minutes to sort through at the sink and sometimes the tap my spray back ester when the sink is too full. It's always the tummy area that gets wet. I do suspect the work top might be at fault.

Moths.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 14/08/2018 18:42

It was definitely kitchen work tops that caused mine. I didn't realise but I 'leant' on the edge of the work surfaces when washing up, and when standing to read the paper or use my laptop. But its a hard habit to break!

fireplacetiles · 14/08/2018 18:50

Yes it's standing with your tummy against a worktop, I was convinced it was my washing machine but it stopped happening for the 3 months that I had no kitchen and came back when I started standing cooking at a worktop again.

Badtasteflump · 14/08/2018 18:55

I had this and it was clothes moths - unfortunately they loved my cashmere sweaters best and three were beyond repair :( Everything else got a hot wash (at least 50°), the wardrobe was given a good scrub out with lavender zoflora, then I hung a load of Raid anti moth smelly things between my clothes. It seems to have kept them away and no more holes are appearing.

Lenny1980 · 14/08/2018 18:56

Mine have started appearing in the shoulders so definitely not worktop related!

Howhot · 14/08/2018 18:57

Zips or your bra fasteners?
