Bloody mumsey

So I've kinda let myself go clothes wise for a few years.in fact some of my clothes are like 10 years old. I told hubby I want to buy some clothes and feel good about myself again and he agreed and said I dress like a middle aged housewife! Horrified but agree. It's got me thinking, when I was young, I loved clothes and shopping but now I just feel lost. I walk into shops look round then leave empty handed. I have no idea where to start. Hubby suggested tight jeans and mini skirt! No to mini skirts..I'm.39 and really don't have legs for it. Help!! Where do I start!!! I don't want to look mumsey! 😪

Your husband sounds like a real charmer op!
Is he super stylish himself?
I would probably not follow his advice of tight jeans and mini skirts unless that is something you like wearing and would feel comfortable in.
What kind of clothes do you like? What style do you like? If you spend most of your time running around with DC then you probably need to go for clothes that are comfortable and practical as well as stylish.

Make yourself a little moodboard....you could save some photos on your phone and then go shopping but go by yourself with no distraction. Maybe get a little blow dry or manicure so you feel nice. I haven’t tried it personally but some department stores have personal shoppers; I even think Topshop have them. Lots of online stores have videos and also state the models stats so you get an idea of fit. Happy shopping and take no notice of your husband they often are so blunt without realising!!!!

Cakefairy1978 · 04/08/2018 20:46

Haha thanks all. I did kinda push him into be honest...but then I regret asking.

So what does a "middle aged housewife" look like? This one wears blue jeans or white pedal pushers with a variety of tops depending on what the weather's like. Wedges on the feet, a slick of lippy and I'm ready to go. Ddil (30 years younger) wears much the same!

Cakefairy1978 · 04/08/2018 21:00

I asked him to elaborate and he said baggy jeans and baggy tops..which I do do quite often. I think I've just got comfortable

What's your shape ?
Skinny jeans , vest top and shirt look good.
Layers and scarves.
A denim or faux biker jacket are useful.
Try stuff on that you wouldn't normally. Order a load try on and return.
Look online for styles you like. Build up ideas of what you think looks good.

whattimeislove · 05/08/2018 07:33

I dress like that too OP. I think the first rule I have to follow is either baggy top with leggings/skinny/fitted jeans/trousers, or fitted top with baggy trousers.

But never both baggy top & bottoms.

It might be helpful to first work out your ideal style. If you look at the website of a specific store online which resonates with you? Eg hush, mint velvet and whistles usually have things i like then i try to replicate the look cheaper with M&S or Oasis or H&M. Have your colours done perhaps if you're prone to wearing slouchy greys or washed out colours? I found it really helpful to get me out of my black habit.

ChishandFips33 · 05/08/2018 09:23

It's hard when you've got in to a rut because when you go 'new' shopping you gravitate to all the same stuff!

Maybe try spending some time trying things on you'd never normally choose; style and colour wise

Or a personal shopper - they'll have more of an objective opinion of you

Is there a celebraty whose style you like?

Sounds like your DH just wants you to show your figure off more - you're both at extreme ends of the scale so just need to find something in the middle

Once you start building up your new image, donate the old stuff so you're never tempted back in to old ways

Alienspaceship · 05/08/2018 09:38

You need time. Time is more important than budget. Try on clothes. Try on more clothes. Don’t expect to be successful or buy anything at all on your first couple of trips to the shops. Try on things you think will be a disaster, be prepared to laugh - you will be surprised what suits you. And I agree with What above about the baggy rule!

NuffingChora · 05/08/2018 09:43

What size/height are you? We might be able to help with some suggestions. There’s so much you can wear which is practical and comfortable but also looks cool, understated and stylish. You might also find that some things you’d never have thought of look great. Instagram and pinterest are great sources of inspiration.

Fresta · 05/08/2018 09:51

I like to use next as inspiration as their site is easy to navigate, they have so much stuff there’s a style to suit everyone and they sell designer brands too. I often order a shed load of stuff to just try and then return everything I don’t want to store. They are very easy to use and process refunds quickly.

hendricksy · 05/08/2018 09:53

Where do you live ? If near me I'll take you shopping . I've done it for quite a few friends !

Cakefairy1978 · 05/08/2018 16:39

Thanks all. I'm 5'6 in height...big size 12 but currently dieting so hope to be a size 10 in a couple of months. I like no effort style. I just ordered fake leather jacket from m&s. I have some new brown ankle boots with a bit if a heel and I'm hunting for cashmere jumpers if price allows. Funnily enough I've emailed someone about my colours last night.

Thanks for reply. Yes need to find the time to try on loads. It's hard as I don't have time ..and when I do go feel rushed to get home. It's my 40th in October and going away for the night to a swanky hotel so want to feel nice

hendricksy · 05/08/2018 17:04

Bit too far 😬

hendricksy · 05/08/2018 17:06

My top tip is to get a next account , I don't like next clothes but they sell loads and loads of brands and if you pay the £20 a year you get unlimited deliveries and you just return it all to the shop when you are done . It's all free until you want to keep an item . Way easier than getting from different shops .

Cakefairy1978 · 05/08/2018 17:33

Grin haha no worries x

M +S have something in their app that you put your details in, and it suggests outfits for you. It's quite good.
I generally order loads from Debenhams and get them delivered in store. I then go in when it's not too busy and try them all on, making sure I'm wearing good underwear and have done my hair and make up. Then anything I don't want I just return there and then.
I've stuck with a theme this year; ankle grazer pants from M+S in different colours, and t shirts to go with. Cos do good t shirts that wash well although they're not the cheapest.
