Tuck in or leave out

Do you tuck your top/shirt into your trousers/skirt or leave it out?

I often see people who leave them out and think how much nicer they would look with it tucked in. Especially with skirts where the cinched in waist is completely lost to a shirt that's hanging funny over the waist.

Is it just me or do people ruin nice outfits by leaving their tops out?

Obviously it does depend on the outfit.

I do a half tuck.

Fairylea · 24/07/2018 10:37

I leave out mostly because I find it more comfortable. I am all about comfort. Obviously if I was dressing up for something special I would make a big effort, but I’d probably go for a dress rather than tuck in. The extra fabric around my waist irritates me!

autumndreaming · 24/07/2018 10:42

I do understand it's sometimes more comfy. And some are styled that way. It's often when I see a smart shirt with a skirt and it all looks a bit shapeless because there's no definition

Tuck in shows my shape off better.

MoltonSilver · 24/07/2018 10:59

I can go either way, depending on the outfit and my mood.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 24/07/2018 13:27

Ye olde c-section overhang here. I am one of those people who ruin perfectly nice outfits by never tucking anything in. My real shape underneath upsets me so I prefer to keep it hidden Sad

(Not to hi-jack but if anyone has any suggestions for dressing that shape better please can you share?)

I've seen a lot of people recently who tuck in at the front and hang over the back

MeanTangerine · 24/07/2018 14:50

That's the 'French tuck', courtesy of Tan on Queer Eye. It's addictive.

Gahbahboo · 24/07/2018 14:55

I do the tuck in the front at least, sometimes the whole top is tucked in, really makes a difference for me as I have a small waist and a short torso.

autumndreaming · 24/07/2018 15:06

I do love a half tuck! Especially with jeans and a nice loose t shirt

I've lost quite a lot of weight over the last few months, and tucking in is one of the things I'm really enjoying being able to do! Either a full or a half tuck depending on the shape of the clothes. Completely changes the look of an outfit.

beeefcake · 24/07/2018 20:08

It depends what I'm wearing- if I'm wearing any a-line type skirt I will tuck in or it looks a bit strange I think.

Trousers it generally depends on the mood- sometimes I like the baggy look if I'm wearing an oversized t shirt.

It really is situational for me

3stonedown · 24/07/2018 20:15

I always tuck. I'm quite hourglass so I look so much wider at the waist if not. Tend to do half tuck with jeans

Racecardriver · 24/07/2018 20:16

It depends on the shirt really.

Faceisamess · 24/07/2018 20:22

Totally depends on the outfit, so can't say.

LivininaBox · 24/07/2018 20:26

I can't tuck, it looks awful on me. I have a short, thick waist and big hips and any sort of tucking exaggerates this and looks terrible. It does limit what I can wear especially for work, as I can't wear a shirt.

Candyflip · 24/07/2018 20:27

I have just lost quite a lot of weight and have to tuck in otherwise I just look fat. (Hourglass and my boobs just make me look massive all over) But after years of shapeless clothes I am struggling with it a bit. Even the French tuck makes me look a bit shapeless. Any ideas on where I am going wrong?

autumndreaming · 25/07/2018 10:18

@Candyflip maybe experiment with different waist heights? Not sure if that is the correct term but if you are hourglass high waisted bottoms with a top tucked in could emphasise your shape!

Judydreamsofhorses · 25/07/2018 10:27

I wear a lot of high waisted bottoms, so either tuck, or wear things which are slightly cropped and sit on the waist. (No actual flesh flashing, though!) I have a small waist and bigger bum/hips.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/07/2018 10:31

Martin, I have the overhang and it was less noticeable when I was overweight. I'm not overweight now but do have a bit of a tummy still (middle aged) as I also had a fist sized split in my abdominal muscles which means exercise has limited effect.

I had a tendency to wear A line tops over trousers/jeans to disguise it but I've stopped doing that as it makes me look like I'm still fat. What has helped me is ensuring I have decent supportive pants. I don't necessarily mean the really tight lycra efforts, just things like sloggis etc that hold you properly. It gives a much better look than looser pants or low bikini briefs. And also that I give less of a shit maybe...

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 25/07/2018 11:30

WaxOnFeckOff thank you for that. I agree that wearing flowing and oversized stuff isn't always the most complimentary. I am off to research decent knickers!

SenorBork · 25/07/2018 11:37

I wish I could tuck in! I'm a pear shape with a small waist and wide hips, but I'm also short waisted, and for some reason tucking in just looks awful on me. My small waist gets lost and I end up looking wide and stumpy. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I've tried with loose tops (sometimes works) and tight tops (always looks awful!). I'm waiting for this fashion to pass...

WellTidy · 25/07/2018 11:37

I came on to say that I favour a Queer Eye French tuck too! Love love love all the chaps on Queer Eye.

I have a belly and like a looser short these days. French tucked, obvs.

WellTidy · 25/07/2018 11:37

looser shirt (shorts are out of the question)

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/07/2018 11:38

I like the slogging briefs as they are cotton mostly. I do have some others that I like but I've had them so long I no longer know where I got them :( I do have some slightly less granny briefs from next that are pretty good. I'll see if they have anything similar at the moment.
