Are petticoats still a thing?

I'd like to wear a dress and tights going into the autumn but am always put off as my dress sticks to the tights and you spend the whole days faffing with it as you walk. What would you do to prevent this? Is a petticoat an option for someone in their 30's?

I wear a skirt style petticoat sometimes (is that a 'slip' maybe?) as I have a few unlined cheapy dresses that I'm worried are see through. And seems to help with preventing dress stickage. I am in 30s!

HamsterToast · 22/07/2018 21:53

I wear petticoats to floof out my skirts. You can still get slips for stopping your skirt sticking

LizzieSiddal · 22/07/2018 22:17

I’ve just had to buy one, as I’ve got a lovely new dress but found out it was completely see through!

M and S have them in different lengths which is really useful.

LizzieSiddal · 22/07/2018 22:17

And yes they are known as “slips” if you need to google.

Topsyloulou · 22/07/2018 22:18

I was wearing one yesterday. I wear one under any unlined dress. It's a half slip so sort of miniskirt appearance / length. I have one in black & one in nude. M&S or Debenhams are normally a good place to get them. I also have a longer one for wearing with maxi dresses. I'm 40 this year but I've been wearing them since my 20s.

pasturesgreen · 23/07/2018 09:16

I always wear a slip, I have a selection in different colours and materials. Perhaps not the most stylish item in my wardrobe, but they do serve a purpose and as I hardly ever wear trousers...I'm 32, btw.

thedevilinablackdress · 23/07/2018 12:48

Yep, generally known as slips now - full or half. M&S or Calvin Klein via TKMaxx are good.

MinesaPinot · 23/07/2018 13:27

Yes, I'm wearing a slip under my dress at the moment. I've got several in nude/black, varying lengths, some full slips and some half slips. I find they give a dress a better line, and are invaluable under unlined dresses. As others have said, M & S, Calvin Klein, Debenhams or TK Maxx are good.

What I'd really like is one of the vintage ones that had an integral bra in - really popular in the 50's/60's. I need to wear a bra, but sometimes my bra strap shows through the fabric at the back IYKWIM. Anyone got any suggestions where to look?

MikeUniformMike · 23/07/2018 18:07

Can you get culotte type slips? I have some really summery dresses and would feel more comfortable with a slip or shorts underneath.

PurpleWithRed · 23/07/2018 18:13

absolutely, wouldn't be without them. As above, M&S are OK, have half and full in a variety of lengths. You can get some divided ones for trousers/culottes but you'll have to google, I can't remember the brand.

MikeUniformMike · 23/07/2018 18:17

Thanks. Divided was just the word I needed. Off too look.

Bodear · 23/07/2018 18:21

Oh god I’m now fretting I should be wearing slips! I always wear skirts/ dresses for work but don’t own a slip. Should I? Confused

Racecardriver · 23/07/2018 18:24

Yes, they sell them in M&S although I prefer slips myself.

Racecardriver · 23/07/2018 18:25

Nowhere near thirty and have been wearing slips etc since my teens.

FilledSoda · 23/07/2018 18:28

Of course they are still a thing, don't you see them when you're buying your underwear?
I've loads ,they double up as nighties.
They stop tights clinging and help dresses fall nicely.

TryingToJuggle · 23/07/2018 22:23

Wow. Thanks everyone. I've never owned one and just couldn't think what they would be called. I'm off to check them out when I next go shopping.

They is wonderful - makes a cheaper fabric look richer and provides protection if it's breezy, and even stop sweaty patches in this endless bloody heat and your dress riding up and...

I have a few.

These are they www.marksandspencer.com/l/lingerie/slips

ChishandFips33 · 24/07/2018 03:09

m&s here too - different lengths and colours

ChishandFips33 · 24/07/2018 03:11

Mike m&s have the culotte slip on Anlaf's link Smile

Copperbonnet · 24/07/2018 03:32

Bodear they aren’t mandatory, don’t panic GrinWink

If you buy more expensive dresses or skirts which are already lined you won’t need a slip.

However they are wonderful for making a cheaper dress look better.

Even expensive unlined dresses sometimes need a little help though. I have several expensive wrap dresses and I’d never wear them without a slip, they give a much cleaner line.

lifebeginz · 24/07/2018 15:40

I was thinking the same thing yesterday thanks to a beautiful but see through new dress.... I was glad to stumble across this thread and took myself to M&S on my lunchbreak for a two pack of slips :) Now I can wear said dress to luncht omorrow!

teta · 24/07/2018 16:39

I am the proud owner of two M&S cotton slips that I’m wearing under thin kaftan cotton dresses. My dresses hang so much better and it’s been a real revelation. Now I’ve ordered another two to dye nude for under lace/coloured skirts.

Agustarella · 24/07/2018 16:42

Everyone wore slips when I was little (early 80s). Not sure why they disappeared. Anyone know of any good ones that aren't too nylon-y?

saywhatnnow · 24/07/2018 16:46

I'm under 30 and I wear them ! Especially with white or something like might blow up! I get mine at M & S they are quite reasonably priced :)

Jolonglegs · 24/07/2018 16:56

I have several slips, both half and full length, and yes M&S are good. Wear them regularly with unlined skirts, and occasionally when I have a see thru dress. I've also been known to use a full slip as a nightie.
