Are petticoats still a thing?

I'd like to wear a dress and tights going into the autumn but am always put off as my dress sticks to the tights and you spend the whole days faffing with it as you walk. What would you do to prevent this? Is a petticoat an option for someone in their 30's?

I bought one in the winter for the first time in nearly 35 odd years. It made a huge difference to several clingy dress/tunics.

I've jusyt got a black one and tried it on with a cream dress (with thought of getting a white/cream one...the dress was shirt style with a black pattern and the slip looked really good just showing out the top of the dress if a little bit Kirsty Allsopp

Augustra the M+S one I got is a microfibre material I think, not very polyestery but not cotton. It works really well under clothes

TryingToJuggle · 24/07/2018 21:24

The M&S ones look great. I'm not a fan of having tight things around my waist so might go for a short length full slip. Then I just need to source good right with a wide waistband I r more of a hipster fit. Can anyone help with this too?

Yep - Im 28 and wear slips most days. M&S ones are brilliant, I have them in black and nude.

WhatThePuck · 25/07/2018 02:05

Try putting a thin layer of hairspray on your tights

Agustarella · 27/07/2018 16:12

@Oldraver thanks for the tip! Have ordered two packs of two (nude/black) from M&S, one pack each for me and one for DD1. Now we can wear all those crappy thin Boohoo dresses that would otherwise be wasted. :)

LizzieSiddal · 27/07/2018 19:00

oldraver I do that too!

I also use the full slips as nighties. They are really comfy and look pretty too.

raindropsandsunshine · 27/07/2018 19:03

If you don't want to wear one, you can get a spray that's anti-static, can't recall the name right now...

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/07/2018 19:22

I wear petticoats (or half-slips as Americanisation would prefer they are called Angry ) under most of my dresses and skirts because I think they hang better. Most of mine are from Matalan.

Agustarella · 27/07/2018 20:17

I was confused because I thought a half slip was a short slip, but I see that LadyMonica is right. It's a petticoat/underskirt.

whattheheck2 · 28/07/2018 09:40

M&S do a good range of petticoats.

teta · 28/07/2018 10:08

I’ve just bought a cool floaty maxi skirt but the lining is very synthetic, tight and sweat inducing. So I’ve cut it out and will wear the skirt with my cotton M&S slip. The trouble is I now need to dye one black as well as one nude.

SundayGirls · 30/07/2018 22:47

I call them underskirts and wear them under summer dresses that I fear are too see-through; and occasionally under dresses that stick to my tights. I have them in nude for lighter colour dresses and black for dark ones.

Although I'm a big fan of tights and dresses and find it's mainly cotton dresses or linings and for dresses which are fitted or semi-fitted that the sticking problem occurs, due to friction.

If you mean sticking because it's a man made/nylon/polyester dress causing static, then I find putting hand cream on, rubbing in only lightly then smoothing over my tights-clad legs and/or the inside of the dress can stop the static. Usually static only occurs if you tumble dry the dresses. If you hang them up to dry it doesn't happen nearly as much.

Hope this helps!

You can also get a good selection here, including cotton culotte slips (which I wish I'd had for some of those hot days when I wore leggings to stop my thighs rubbing).

teta · 31/07/2018 19:17

Where bigfatbloomers?

MipMipMip · 31/07/2018 19:25

There is a how to on making them (well half ones) in the latest Love Sewing mag that I have, maybe not the latest out. They are thinking retro though.

I did buy some tulle to make a puffy one earlier, before seeing this thread. 😀

Haffiana · 31/07/2018 22:26

I always wear dresses and I always wear slips underneath. They make dresses hang so much better and stops them clinging in places that you don't want them to.

I like the M&S Cool Comfort reversible ones - they don't get at all static-y, and they are cool even in the weather we have been having.

Clionba · 01/08/2018 09:14

I always wear them. Cotton in the summer, those anti static ones when wearing tights. Too many summer skirts and dresses are see through, and they definitely give unlined clothes a better shape. All from M&S, as folks have said.
