Jesus Mary and Joseph, it’s all gone wrong!

So, I’ve dyed my hair since ever, it’s been all colours, and last year I stopped dying it altogether and let it go natural, which in my case is “salt and pepper”. The front is whiter than the back. I thought it looked distinguished and authentic...

Well today DS brought home a picture of himself doing an activity, and there is a kindly looking elderly lady, very academic looking, leaning over and helping him. I assumed School had got some retired lecturer type in to help with the project, which happened to be Ancient Rome. I thought she looked interesting and assumed she was a retired lecturer from our nearby university.

Then I realised her top was very similar to one I have. And then I realised it was in fact, me.Sad

I am 47. I don’t necessarily expect to look like Elle McPherson, but I’m also not ready to look like HM The Queen.

I am going to dye my hair TOMORROW. How do I choose what colour? Something that my white roots won’t spoil in a matter of weeks.

Help help help!

Get a really decent cut before you consider dyeing.

Grin This reminds me of looking at photos of newborn dc3. I noticed a stripy cushion on the sofa and wondered what my necklace was doing lying on it Grin Sadly that cushion was actually me. I am tempted to say dye it purple and pink. Do you feel brave?
FlibbertyGiblets · 19/07/2018 22:49

An undercut with quiff ?
Sharp Mary Quant retro bob?

Dame Evelyn Glennie has poker straight silver hair, beautifully cut.

Thoughts?

HouseOfGoldandBones · 19/07/2018 22:49

How brave are you with your colours OP?

I'm silver not grey, definitely not grey and I dye mine a different colour every couple of weeks.

I'm currently pink, and was blue last week.

Because the funky colours don't really grip to grey hair, they wash out really quickly, and because they're essentially conditioner with food colouring in, they don't damage your hair at all.

Pepperandsalty · 19/07/2018 22:50

Where do I even start? Flibberty mine hasn’t been cut for over a year, and I’ve avoided salons as I did the “no poo” thing and stopped using shampoo.

Rickoshay it’s mind bending isn’t it?

Ha! I say the camera CAN lie!

I’ve been gracefully grey for years now, but since my face has started sagging, I’ve recently been considering some sort of golden blond colour ? Or spme warm caramels with the blonde.
I’ve no idea how this will be achieved as I never go to a proper hairdresser( my friend Whois good trims it for me). But as about 1/4 of my hair is still blackIt may look Odd?
Good luck on your quest.

Pepperandsalty · 19/07/2018 22:52

Flibberty my hair is quite wavy naturally so anything that’s a really sharp cut doesn’t seem to last on me as it waves and kinks. It’s very thick and in good condition though.

Oh dear, sorry you feel like this. Can you get into a hairdressers for advice?

I quite fancy an undercut. I have quite nice cheekbones so I can get away with it I reckon.

If you have a friend or acquaintance with great hair colour, ask them for their hairdresser's number (their colourist). Book in for a consultation.

Pepperandsalty · 19/07/2018 22:55

Houseofgoldandbones I don’t mind being hair-brave so those shampoo things sound great. But, as I say, I’ve started self regulating so I wonder would I have to lose that?

FlibbertyGiblets · 19/07/2018 22:55

Ooh thick and good condition, lovely. Wavy too. I reckon something like a blunt bob (google Alexa Chung ) would suit. Get it cut, girlfriend. Then see. Go on.

Candyflip · 19/07/2018 22:55

As you get older you should go lighter. Blonde highlights will also blend in the grey.

RickOShay · 19/07/2018 22:56

It really is

Pepperandsalty · 19/07/2018 22:56

I’m also hugely allergic to peroxide so anything I have will have to be done as foils rather than a full head.

X post. Under cut with good cheekbones - stylish and chic. DO IT.

Pepperandsalty · 19/07/2018 22:57

Side undercut or back?

OP posts:
FlibbertyGiblets · 19/07/2018 22:58

SIDE!

FlibbertyGiblets · 19/07/2018 22:58

I'm a TERRIBLE egger-on.

FlibbertyGiblets · 19/07/2018 23:00

I have dead straight hair I keep in a very close crop in case you were wondering. If it was blonde it would be a Pat Butcher. Sans earrings.

Pepperandsalty · 19/07/2018 23:01

How do I keep it looking feminine? I’ve got big features and suspect I might look like a portly lesbian librarian if I get it wrong.

(Some of my best friends are portly lesbian librarians blah blah.)
