Flip Flops have given me plantar fascia

Or however it's spelt.

Anyway, my summer sandals etc have given me chronic foot pain and I can't wait to get back into my chunky boots when my feet will right themselves.

In the meantime, what can I do? It's too hot for normal shoes and trainers don't make a difference.

I stretch my feet as much as I can, but shoe recommendations would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Try FitFlop Sandals. My plantar faschitis has been terrible for over a year, but it's getting so much better since wearing them. They're not the most stylish of shoes/sandals but it's better than the pain. I bought the 'Flip' ones earlier in the year - they're back on sale again at the moment and I'm tempted to buy a pair for next year already!

Get some Crocs flip flops

www.crocs.co.uk/p/crocband-flip/11033.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwyrvaBRACEiwAcyuzRJI5Zj8M1qrK64WA4hh86cEWVj6UO4u0G8RvvGwztlflwyrMclMLiRoCEJoQAvD_BwE&cid=410&adid=google_ppc_UK_shopping_Flips_unisex_11033-410&ef_id=VpYYmgAAAaltafwN:20180718083501:s

They're curved in the right places for plantar fasciitis. I wore them for an entire summer when mine was bad and they were the only thing I could wear in comfort.

You can sometimes get the crocs stuff cheaper on Amazon but mine were worth every penny I paid for them.

SharpLily · 18/07/2018 09:40

I have bad plantar fasciitis and FitFlops are the only shoes I can wear with any degree of comfort. I've even bought special orthopedic monstrosities specifically designed for the condition but FitFlops are much better.

Get some supportive walking sandals like Teva or Merrell

ilovecherries · 18/07/2018 09:55

The only sandal I can wear is the Fitflops lulu - the ones with the back strap. I also got special socks from Amazon that I wear in bed - miraculous! Rolling a frozen bottle of water under the foot helped as well, in addition to the usual stretching exercises. And never going barefoot.

Magicstar1 · 18/07/2018 10:41

I wear my Nike runners, but got inserts in the chemist which have really helped.

dogrilla · 18/07/2018 10:42

Oofos are ugly as sin but they are bliss for plantar fasciitis.

DentistWimp · 18/07/2018 11:04

Thanks! I have some very old fit flops so I'll dig them out. I love going barefoot Sad

I live in Birkies during the summer which seem to be ok for me.
In the winter I use orthotic heel inserts in boots, converse or trainers.

Rolling a tennis ball under your foot whilst sitting watching TV or MNing is good too

Lexilooo · 18/07/2018 11:20

Birkenstocks

I recently wore sketchers at the beginning of a busy holiday. My foot was agony after from the lack of support/rigidity on cobbles. I was dreading the next day but my birkenstocks literally saved the holiday. Instant comfort. I have walked many many miles in mine.

Fitflops are good but not quite as supportive so I wear birkenstocks if I will be walking a lot or if the ground is uneven and fitflops the rest of the time.

I never wear normal flipflops apart from short journeys back from the beach or around the pool.

Oldraver · 18/07/2018 11:24

I think there are a lot of people that will be having this problem in the future...the last few years there seems to of been a proliferation of shit flat footwear...I blame the gladiator sandals of a few years ago.

I need support and can only look at Converse for my feet to ache

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/07/2018 11:26

OP, it is your chunky winter boots that have given you PF, not the flip flops. PF occurs because the foot is too weak to support itself properly, so strain is put on the PF.

At an extreme, wearing "very supportive" footwear is like having your foot in a cast. The shoe does all of the "work" and as a result your foot weakens.

Do foot strengthening exercises and calf hamstring stretches and gradually transition to less supportive shoes (rather than straight from heavy winter boots to flip flops) and in the future you may be able to go barefoot again...

CountFosco · 18/07/2018 12:28

And never going barefoot.

I know this is NHS advice but I find it hard to believe that foot pain would get worse by going barefoot. We are suppose to be barefoot, it's shoes that cause foot pain most of the time (e.g. heels contribute to plantar fasciitis because wearing them shortens the tendons over time) and the less we wear them the better.

ilovecherries · 18/07/2018 12:49

I agree it sounds counter intuitive, Fosco. But I do know that going barefoot makes mine much, much worse. If I wander about even for 30 minutes without shoes in the morning, my foot will be aching.

ShatnersBassoon · 18/07/2018 12:53

Put an arch support in your shoes; you can get very slim leather ones that are suitable to use in sandals.

FatCow2018 · 18/07/2018 12:56

Seconding crocs flip flops, they are amazingly comfortable and my heel pain is vastly reduced when I wear them.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/07/2018 13:01

Could this be what I have?? I’ve been thinking it’s down to my sandals plus I don’t step properly on my right foot (very high arches, neglected broken (I suspect) toe, very high arches that often cramp!). Every morning/night waking the first few steps cause me searing pain! I was thinking maybe it’s due to my weight (8 months post partum so really should be getting on with weight loss!). Anyway. I bought some insoles for my running shoes as they always turn my toes numb for some reason, and noticed they were for plantar fasciitis. I’m obsessed with my crocs but would never wear them out of the house so going to look at their sandals.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/07/2018 13:43

If you have already weak feet it will. Your arch should support your body weight, arch supports etc will weaken your arch because it never does any work. When your arch is weakened the PF is put under pressure. So if you already have PF barefoot will hurt. Once you have weak feet you need to be artificially supported.

lucy101101 · 18/07/2018 13:48

Get some Teva's preferably the Premier or Universal Crafted ones as these are more supportive than nearly anything else I wear... and crucially much softer than Birkenstocks... I had to get rid of all my Birkenstocks...

Actually... I did keep some birkenstocks... the ones here:

WhoKnowsWhereTheW1neGoes · 18/07/2018 14:03

Hmm, well, I think Croc flipflops are what caused mine so I definitely don't recommend those. Birkenstocks, lots of stretching and massage with spiky physio balls help mine a lot. I go barefoot some of the time, it's horrible not being able to in hot weather. Orthotics in trainers and boots in winter.

WhoKnowsWhereTheW1neGoes · 18/07/2018 14:06

Oh and if I really want to wear flipflops I have these www.pro11wellbeing.co.uk/category/379/Orthotic-Shoes-and-Sandals

they are much more supportive than my Croc ones which are too soft.

welshmist · 18/07/2018 14:06

Some good you tube exercise tutorials as well. Croc fit flops suit me fine but they are not for everyone. Skechers are the only shoes son can wear after horrific kite boarding accident, many ops. metatarsals eventually fused can wear with ortho inserts.

Cupoteap · 18/07/2018 14:46

Sketchers walk sandles help mine takes a few days

DentistWimp · 18/07/2018 19:44

Ok,got my spiky ball and a jam jar. Thanks!
