Ponds Cold Cream??!

MyBreadIsEggy · 13/07/2018 21:22

Just come off the phone with my Nana, and we got talking about an event I went to this weekend. She said she I looked lovely, and I told her how good makeup can hide a host of sins. Then went on whinging about how I’ve had horrible skin lately and she recommended Ponds Cold Cream, “if it’s good enough for Marilyn Monroe, then it’s good enough for you!” she says Grin
So how does everyone rate it?
I’ve got combination skin, suffer with dry patches on my forehead around my brow, horrible open pores on my nose, hyperpigmentation from a 12 year struggle with acne. Luckily that’s getting less of a problem now, and I only get the odd breakout nowadays, but the scarring and pigmentation is there from old breakouts. I tend to scar very easily - the slightest scratch on my arm or leg leaves a mark for ages, so you can imagine the marks I have left from a couple of monster spots Sad
I’ve just ordered a pot of it from Boots online. It’s under £5 so not a huge problem if it’s no good, but from googling and what my Nana has said, it seems it some kind of holy grail product?!!

Clever nan
I swear astral, Nivea ,ponds they are old school but so so good.no fancy claims
BUT solid emollient properties, and like you say if you don’t like it no big deal

Chanelprincess · 13/07/2018 21:35

I tried it a few years ago but it didn't suit my skin which is fairly normal. It felt too heavy for me, but I know quite a few people who love it.

YouWereRight · 13/07/2018 21:49

I love it. I alternate between ponds cold cream and an oil cleanser. It's quite heavy, which is why I don't use it everyday, but I wouldn't be without it.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 13/07/2018 21:54

Don't know about ponds but Nivea blue pot can fix absolutely anything even my wrinkly neck. Any expensive cream has never compared. I slather it on my face at night and then don't need a day moisturiser, unless using spf.

QueenofLouisiana · 13/07/2018 21:56

My DSM always asks me to take several jars when we travel to Australia to visit. She can’t buy it there.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 13/07/2018 21:56

I swear Nivea and astral are marvellous workhorses of moisturiser

dudsville · 13/07/2018 21:56

I tried it as a cleanser but didn't get on with it - went back to eve lom. I do use a lot of nivea blue pot and am interested that others are using this on their faces. I will give this a try!

Secretlifeofme · 13/07/2018 21:58

I ordered some after seeing it recommended on here. It feels nice going on and smells nice, but unfortunately is too heavy for my skin (which sounds a lot like yours btw) and so I now only use it once a week as a face mask.

SassitudeandSparkle · 13/07/2018 21:58

I have dry skin and the Nivea cream is fab - the proper gloopy stuff in the blue tub. I have wondered about cold cream but haven't tried it for years removing makeup for a school production where the teachers got a bit panstick-happy

Let us know what you think!

unintentionalthreadkiller · 13/07/2018 21:59

@dudsville I only use it at night - you couldn't use it in the morning and then put make up on without looking like you'd rubbed your face in a chip pan.

MyBreadIsEggy · 13/07/2018 22:55

Will give it a go when I collect it tomorrow and report back Smile

I love it as a cleanser. Slap it on all over your face, eyes and all, then leave on for a few minutes, and remove with a warmed face cloth. Like a cleanser and an exfoliator in one Grin

MamaLupine · 14/07/2018 07:25

My skin has never been better since I've been using Nivea in the blue tin! Is Ponds Cold Cream a moisturiser as well as a make-up remover?

SheStoodInTheStorm · 14/07/2018 08:51

I tried Ponds and it really made my skin worse! (Acne)

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 14/07/2018 08:54

I always use it to take makeup off, before cleansing. Are you supposed to use it as a moisturiser?

AnnaMagnani · 14/07/2018 08:56

I used Nivea blue pot as a night moisturiser. I have oily skin and it did indeed make me look like an oil slick but it was a fab moisturiser. It does prove that moisturiser is basically just moisturiser and everything else is just marketing.

But that's it. If you want more, you have to look at retinols, acids, SPF during the day. Only proven things to actually create change.

Currently however I am in a CBA phase.

neveradullmoment99 · 14/07/2018 09:04

I also thought cold cream was a make up remover? I like blue pot. I also found it great especially for my saggy neck. Going to buy some as ive run out.

Grandmas are often full of terrible beauty advice and it’s always a variant on “why don’t you use [insert name of old fashioned, outmoded beauty product or better yet, a household cleaning item] like we used to? I look great for 76!”

You can’t say, “yeah grandma but you might look better if you’d used a proper SPF moisturiser or used a proper hair conditioner, just saying”.

Instead you end up partly subscribing to this myth that modern skincare is a load of nonsense and we should just stick to the old stuff.

When I was in my teens and getting spots, my grandma was adamant that washing my face in ‘stergene’ (a wool detergent I think...not sure whether it’s still available) would clear them up in no time. Of course, we now know that teenage acne is caused by bacteria and that stripping the face of oil with harsh detergents is likely to make the problem worse, but grandmas brook no argument. No, the modern world must be shown to be not quite as good as the 1950s!

In fact, Ponds, Astral, Nivea etc are terrible for combination skin and there are far better products out there, designed to address breakouts and pigmentation. Don’t tell grandma.

Nettletheelf · 14/07/2018 09:09

My friend’s grandma used to advocate washing your face in the loo AFTER IT HAD BEEN USED AND BEFORE FLUSHING!!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 14/07/2018 10:23

In fairness if your granny advocates stergene for facial cleansing she’s no Lisa Eldridge
Of course the tech and technical understanding in skin care has really came on
But an emollient is still an emollient and Nivea and Astral do the basic job

Nettletheelf · 14/07/2018 22:35

Yes, that’s rather the point, isn’t it? Grannies are usually absolutely not Lisa Eldridge, hence their advice tends to be well-meaning but misguided.

Yes, Astral and Nivea do a basic job, but the OP’s grandma advocating Ponds Cold Cream as a skincare panacea is over-simplifying, to say the least.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 14/07/2018 23:55

Well yes but Nivea, astral, ponds are workhorse emollients from old days not research driven skin care. But good none the less

I have astral and I use it for heels, legs, feet and it’s great

Timefortea99 · 15/07/2018 00:04

I like Nivea Soft but the original is just thick gunk to me. Do you just use it as a regular moisturiser?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 15/07/2018 00:05

On heels,legs yes. Face no

travailtotravel · 15/07/2018 00:09

A nivea blue fan here. Not everyday but excellent for an overnight fix now and then. Its most useful in colder weather for me as it's way too heavy for now. But it's cheap as chips and lasts for ages. We can veer towards over complicated sometimes sonits nice to know simple is still there.
