Shoes for teen girls to walk on hot weather

Going away for a city break where we'll be doing a fair bit of walking in warm weather . My teen and tween dds only ever wear adidas superstars and I think they're going to be too heavy , clunky and hot . They say they'll be fine but I don't want moaning later . Dh suggested some decent karrimor trekking sandals which they opposed vehemently . They are very style conscious but we need a compromise . Any suggestions for comfortable, lightweight shoes or sandals that teen girls would like ? I miss when they were little and would just live in Clark's doodles !

I'm not a teen (I'm a 40 year old woman 😬), but Ive just bought a pair of Toms sandals. I think they look great and they're unbelievably comfy.

I see a lot of kids wearing Toms shoes, so maybe sandals would okay?

I like those Toms ones! Also, check out Oliver Bonas for sandals - super comfy but also stylish (I'm 25 and like to think I'm not too out of touch haha!)

seasure · 13/07/2018 12:42

Thanks - I actually like those toms sandals for myself !

GorgonLondon · 13/07/2018 12:44

I think those soles are far too thin for long walks.

Dancergirl · 13/07/2018 12:47

Good luck with that!

I couldn't persuade my 11 and 14 year old dds out of their Adidas trainers even in a hot climate. 11 year old in particular flatly refuses to wear any sandals at all.

They might be ok, how hot is it going to be? At least trainers are comfortable, some sandals rub.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/07/2018 12:48

My DD is 20 and never wear sandals. Flip flops for the beach and trainers the rest of the time. She favours Adidas Stan Smiths and has many pairs. She wore them all last summer while working in a hot part of America and she walks miles in them. Those Adidas superstars look fine and are not worth fighting over.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/07/2018 12:50

It is also fair to say that at age 55 i prefer trainers for walking on city breaks as i find them much more comfortable as i can wear light trainer socks. Sandals just blister my feet.

GorgonLondon · 13/07/2018 13:05

Yes I walk a LOT and I wear gym trainers whenever I can get away with it. Far better support and much less likely to chafe. They also protect your feet from scratches etc

Hoppinggreen · 13/07/2018 13:06

My 13 year old usually wear her beloved Addidas but for lots of walking she has a pair of white Sketchers

Scotinoz · 13/07/2018 13:06

Having now owned the Toms sandals for a month, I can verify they're very comfortable (in my opinion anyway). They've already walked many miles around various UK cities, a long weekend in the US north east, as well as day to day trotting around after small children

Freshprincess · 13/07/2018 13:13

I prefer my trainers for lots of walking and I’m long past my teenage years.

I have boy teens and wouldn’t even contemplated buying footwear unless they asked for it.

What age will you let them decide for themselves what they want to wear?

NotTooBeautiful · 13/07/2018 13:13

Tbh I’d let them wear their Adidas. I had this battle with my 12 yr old, she’s convinced that she doesn’t need lighter shoes than her heavy Nike trainers that she wears with everything, she’s vehemently opposed to any sandals or similar so Ive given up. If they get hot feet that’s their problem really isn’t it? You tried.

seasure · 13/07/2018 22:30

Tempted to just stick with the adidas now

Northern Italy - 30 odd degrees

Fresh they've been deciding what to wear for as long as I can remember . That doesn't mean I don't give advice / recommend a better alternative as I happen to have that bit of life experience ( for example , I've been to that part of the world and done the routes a few times , they haven't ). And Me and dh will be the ones who'll have to put up with the moaning, although they tend to be great to travel with and get on with it . I'm a planner and like to cover all eventualities .

DD wore her Adidas superstars for nearly two weeks in Rome last year and they were fine. Better for cobbles etc than my sandals.

Hellywelly10 · 13/07/2018 22:36

There will be some great shoe shops out there op. My dd has been wearing kicker boots to school every day in this heat wave and shes still alive!

FlorenceLyons · 14/07/2018 08:58

My 15 year old will only wear sandals if she's 100% certain that no one she knows will see her Grin. So she probably would in your situation, but she's been wearing trainers all through the recent heatwave. I couldn't bear it (I hate having hot feet) but she seems to have been fine.

TheNoseyProject · 14/07/2018 09:03

Personally I’d wear the adidas all stars over thong/between toe sandals. They’re going to be hot regardless so o honestly don’t think they’ll be much difference.

Love your dh carrying on the excellent father tradition of making practical suggestions that teen girls will clearly recoil at! Grin

SwayingInTime · 14/07/2018 09:08

My teen has been wearing these (crocs!) and has lots of compliments: m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Crocs-Sloane-Gold-Metallic-Cross-Strap-Slide-Womens-Slip-On-Sandals-Size-4-8-/302707913191?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1

Pool sliders seem to be the only alternative round here to superstars/stan smiths.

Turmericky · 14/07/2018 09:16

DD16 and I are just back from touring Rome/Florence/Venice. Despite my reminding her in the weeks leading up, she didn't sort out some sandals.
By the end of Rome we had acquired gel insoles for her converse.
By the end of Florence we had acquired sandals. (There's a shop just across the road from SMN, alongside MacDonalds, that has some very reasonable (20/30/40 euro) sandals if you're not up to the more expensive shops. Bought myself a pair of sandals in there, 29 euro, wickedly comfy.

BillywigSting · 14/07/2018 09:21

I couldn't be persuaded out of my doc martens and black jeans when I was a teenager (even had them as school shoes), even when the mercury hit 30.

I probably was a bit too hot but being a teenager I was willing to suffer. I would have had quite a visceral reaction to being suggested sandals.

My compromise in late teens was converse or vans so still not exactly super light.

Good luck op!

Yokatsu · 14/07/2018 09:28

Id give up if i were you

I have two with physio needs regarding footwear and normally wear insoles. So footwear is a hot topic. Both have rejected tried on a lot of sandals this year.

Most of the sandals (that DD would approve of) out there are rubbish and do nothing for posture and walking. Birkenstocks have been approved by physio but according to DD are ugly and according to DS deeply uncomfortable. Thay have a pair of flip flop style crocs each which actually are surprisingly good (good footbed support), and they'll use kicking around short distances. but any kind of walking DD will default to trainers and DS kickers boots. Last year it was Dr martens and kickers boots.

And im left wondering why im trying to reinvent the wheel every year. Other than the fact theyre feet are hot (and they really dont seem bothered by that) the trainers (or in my case kickers boots) are the exact right thing for walking in. To get sandals that are half as good often you're paying twice as much. I wouldn't mind DD walking in the crocs if she wanted too so for a grand total of 19 quid my conscience is eased and shell probably still wear the trainers.

And when it comes down to it i eventually figured i dont mind moaning about hot feet knowing that they're walking well and there feet are well shoed.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 14/07/2018 09:46

Rather than sandals how about the classic toms. They're really comfy, not sandals and possibly acceptable to teens.
www.toms.com/women/womens-shoes/classic-alpargatas

Yokatsu · 14/07/2018 10:01

I wouldn't be picking classic toms over trainers for walking.

Toms have no heel or arch support and are too flimsy to take an insole. There's hardly any sole let alone cushioned sole so nothing to cushion the heel strike.

Theyre a lovely fashion shoe, But id rather "lose" the argument over their wearing trainers.

WildFlower2018 · 14/07/2018 10:05

I have some sketchers that allow air through the front. I bought them for my weeklong holiday to Portugal, where it was boiling hot and we walked on average 12 miles a day!!!! They were super comfy and they look stylish. I got them from our local outlet store X

Ellafruit1 · 14/07/2018 10:20

Ive got these - www.fatface.com/footwear/womens-footwear/sandals/emma-plaited-sandals/934175.html?dwvar_934175_color=silver&cgid=footwear-women-sandals#pagination=true&start=17

Mine are last year’s in tan, they only have silver or black this year. Very comfy. I’ve gone on a country walks with them and love wearing them wandering round the city all day

Think it’s more about finding something that’s a good fit for your foot shape than the shoe itself sometimes. Toms, Converse are a really bad fit on me yet others say they’re comfy!
