I am going to 2 gigs in the next few months - which is nothing reAally - I used to go to 2 gigs a week 15 yrs ago!! But that is the point I am feeling a little bit past it - I have such a pathetic litle social life since leaving london and having baby no. 2 last year. I am having a total wardrobe crisis and no money to speak of to buy much new - but I am a little unwilling to opt for jeans, band t-shirt (not the band we are going to see of course that is bad form)and docs. That is so early 90's and I am a (soon to be) 33 yo woman.

What is the dress code for north london gigs these days? Can anyone give me some tips?? I want to look at least a little bit like I have a life

The gigs are brian jonestown massacre and then sonic youth so it won't be a crowd of teens i need to blend in with but muso's mainly

hello sweetheart, I 'm nearly 40 and on the very rare occasions I still go to gigs, and I would wager you're either going to the Dublin Castle or the Forum, I would suggest you go with jeans and good boots, great ear-rings and some kind of 3/4 length sleeve top that is quite fitted, but then again you are a spring chiken in comparison, but tbh once you are over 30, it's got to be jeans.

Enjoy

Thank you for the tips so far keep em coming..

Skinny jeans - aggh no way - I am no PJ Harvey - and have no desire to frighten people

I am sure I can find some ensemble as you describe Suzy Wong but seeing as it will be mid july for the BJTM gig I might pass out on the train bootrd and suited - do sixties dresses work or am I pushing it? tunic dress and jeans??

OP posts:
suzywong · 27/05/2007 15:31

oh of course, northern hemisphere, so no boots

well I still think less is more with one of one's best physical features accentuated and either great jewellery or makeup

I am always terrified I look like mutton, especially when I am giddy on alcopops before the support band is over

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2007 16:09

all v sensible suzy - I will try to avoid caning the alcopops - esp as I am a total lightweight these days. Ijust wanted to avoided being dressed etc. like dh in a t and jeans and boots! As I wear jeans virtually every day anyway i secretly wanted to push boat out but probably I should persuade dh to take me somewhere that isn't a grim dark music venue for that eh?! will be going to Islington Academy and camden roundhouse so not spectacular venues (my faves are the garage and the shepherds bush empire)...

will work on hair and make up - though not having been to hairdressers since I got married (2yrs in Aug) I think there is a lot of work to be done there as well!! but maybe the pre-raphelite look will come back

i try not to drink too much of anything at gigs as teh thought of getting to the loo and back is too much to bear

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2007 16:18

good point - brixton academy was awful for that not too mention the hours queueing at cloakroom - but if the band is dire it gives you op to peoplewatch

don't dress up, just wear jeans and tshirt and have fun

madamez · 27/05/2007 20:17

COMFY footwear so you can leap about in glee if the band are good, and even if they're not up to much at least your feet won't hurt. If you're on the curvy side, one of those new floaty-type tops in a funky print over bashed jeans or even black leggings - and either put your stuff (phone, keys, cash) in your pockets or carry the smallest, lightest bag you can find.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2007 20:18

my head knows you are right south but my heart (which is clearly very shallow) is saying - you wear jeans evry feckin day and want to look a little bit foxy and like a female - iykwim - especially as i will be able to count on one hand the no of times i go out 'at night' this year!!

southeastastra · 27/05/2007 20:27

i'd just say whatever you feel comfortable in and can move about and relax in.

hippocampus · 27/05/2007 20:32

Jeans, black fitted top, black jacket, boots.

What Suzywong said basically.

Sonic Youth

SallyAllbright · 27/05/2007 20:42

I think if you dress up too much you will stick out like a sore thumb TBH. If I were you I would go for comfy jeans and skinny fit t-shirt. I always wear Converse, not boots.

if it's really warm weather I have a nice old Boxfresh denim skirt that is comfy and looks good with skinny t-shirt

Brian Jonestown Massacre will probably be quite a cool crowd I should think, but Sonic Youth will be full of balding middle-aged men in tour t-shirts so whatever you wear you will look hot in comparison!

SY are fantastic live - unless Kim Gordon gets her trumpet out - had to suffer that on one occasion at All Tomorrow's Parties.

Have fun!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2007 20:46

ok jeans it is - maybe i can buy some new ones...

majorly looking forward to sonic youth - they are going to play the whole daydream nation album and once they start i won't give a f**k aboutwhat i am wearing. seated venue though so no moshing

OP posts:
bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2007 20:51

last saw sy about 5 yrs ago and they were as tight as a ducks arse - amazing (only nick cave as beaten them in live stakes). You are right about the m'aged crowd sally but i think i am just harking back to my youth wen i wore ten tonnes of glitter and vintage dresses from camden mkt and strpy tights - so i feel sad for the old me that has been put away in a box (forgive hideous typing have sleeping baby on shoulder)

OP posts:
southeastastra · 27/05/2007 20:59

don't buy anything new, just turn up as you are

sonic youth is going back! my best gig was big audio dynamite at the town and country club

BettySpaghetti · 27/05/2007 21:08

hi there bigmouth (I've moved away from the potty training board!) -you mean you're escaping the smell of wee at home to experience the smell of sweat at a gig. I'm .

I used to go to loads of gigs too, many years ago. The one thing I would say is make sure whatever you wear is very light because on the rare occasion I've been to a gig in the last 7 years its been very hot. I think it must be a change in hormnones after you have a child!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2007 21:23

Hi Betty - that is part of the problem if southeast doesn't let me buy new jeans I will be bringing the smell of potty training with me to the gigs and mingled with middleaged muso sweat it is not going to be fragrant-bleurgh

we all need somat to look forward to when poty training I think. a trip to the big smoke will work for me... I just hope I can stay awake and everything... the sounds the lights the people ... it wll be overwhelming like coming outside after being in the cinema for 3 years[slightly scared emoticon]

Are you not actually in London then?

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2007 21:33

used to be based in Lewisham but we moved to bedfordshire last year (a couple of weeks before the babyno 2 arrived - cutting it fine)

train links are pretty good though - dh commutes daily -

We used to live in Oxford so regularly went to London for gigs as there was a 24hr coach service. Loads of great gigs in Oxford too though.

Too far from London or Oxford now though

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2007 21:36

It is just so long since I went out in central London... I have lost my city edge very quickly - I will probably stand still on the wrong side of tube escalators or something - worst crime ever!!!
