Petite women and children's clothes

I'm a 5'1", size 8, small breasted woman and struggle to find clothes on that fit - petite ranges are always really limited. Someone suggested to me recently that I should just buy teenage girl clothes - does anyone else do this? Are sizes comparable so age 15-16 is like a size 8 petite for instance?

I'm a similar shape to you and I've never bought girls clothes because I'm not keen on pink/sparkles etc but I do have a couple of boys clothes in age 12-13. Only problem is teenage boy don't have bums but I do!

halcyondays · 02/07/2018 13:51

At 5'1" you's probably by looking at around age 13 for height. I'm 5'2" and 15-16 clothes would be too long on me.

Loonoon · 02/07/2018 13:54

I used to when I was younger, not dresses so much but jackets and leggings certainly. I also remember with fondness some gorgeous Tammy Girl jump suits - one was pink and the other turquoise. However as I aged my boobs grew and grew and grew so I can’t do it anymore. Except for footwear - I still buy kids trainers and socks.

DuchyDuke · 02/07/2018 13:54

You would be a size 12-13 in length at most but maybe a size 15-16 in measurements. Rather than go for little girl clothes, just buy petitie ranges and get them taken in or up at a drycleaner.

I still sometimes have a look through the 915 range in New Look and in fact bought a skirt and t-shirt in there the other day! I'm the same height and size as you and am an age 13 :)
I've got jeans from there too, maxi dresses, playsuits...!
Some of their stuff is more obviously for teens, but a lot of it is something you'd find in the adult section, but cheaper/possibly a better fit for you :)

My mum used to be like me too, and we'd both shop in Tammy Girl with her buying age 13 and me age 10! Haha

Saladd0dger · 02/07/2018 16:42

I buy from the kids section. Asda had some plain dungarees that fitted perfect and I have a few primark play suits. I also purchased a aged 13 coat from h&m yet can’t fit into there size 16 lol

ColdAsIceCubes · 02/07/2018 16:43

I’m 5’ 1”, size 12 and I buy 14+ from H&M children’s range. Their t-shirts and jeans fit lovely.

Angharad07 · 02/07/2018 16:46

I’m 5’35” and a size 6... kids age 12-13. My feet are a size 4 and I buy some branded shoes in kids sizes. So much cheaper.

CharDeeMacDennis · 02/07/2018 16:48

I buy tops from Johnnie B (I love the pointelle ones in winter). Had jeans from them in the past as well, but not since they changed the range and sizing around, it's all a bit confusing now because the baby, kids and teens ranges are all bunged in together.

MrsJayy · 02/07/2018 16:50

I did until I was around 35 my shape changed and tbf so did my style i didn't think I could get away with some of the clothes Iam under 5ft.

OnlyMakeBelieve · 02/07/2018 16:50

Zara girls section is great for jackets. I get 13 years old and it fits great and I'm about the same as you

ProudThrilledHappy · 02/07/2018 16:50

I sometimes buy from the teen section in H&M. Some of it is sparkles and animal pictures but the basic stuff such as shirts and vests are fine. I’m 5 1 size 12 and fit fine in their age 15 size

silkpyjamasallday · 02/07/2018 16:51

I buy a lot of stuff from the kids section, I’m 5’5” and a size 6/8, but I have shorter legs than my DM who is 5’2” so petite jeans are often still too long. But sizing varies massively between shops with kids clothing, even more so than the women’s section, so in H&M I’ll buy an age 14, in Zara I can fit into their 11-12 jeans, supermarkets tend to be very generously sized, I have age 9-10 leggings from river island that are perfect. I sometimes buy matching things for 2 yo dd and I BlushGrin

If you can fit into the kids ranges go for it, so much cheaper and so many shops just seem to do miniature versions of their adult ranges, which I don’t like to see on actual children but is great for me shopping as an adult.

Geekster1963 · 02/07/2018 16:52

I’m the same 4ft 11 no boobs and a small frame. I find 12-13 are generally a perfect fit. I love the kids GAP hoodies.

MrsJayy · 02/07/2018 17:19

Oh I buy kids waterproof jackets still my most recent is age 13 and fits perfect even womens xs drown me, and I buy kids shoes because I am a 2

Mindchilder · 02/07/2018 17:43

I find the supermarket size 8s very generous so might try some age 12-13 stuff and see how I get on. I would love to be able to buy a playsuit that actually fits!

I’m in my fifties & 4ft10 size six, sometimes buy kids jeans in peacocks age 11-12 fit me perfectly, also new look/next/Boden can sometimes throw up some good things, you have to have a good trawl through as obviously some it can be a bit to childish.
MrsJayy I’m the same, always buy kids trainers which are way cheaper but it is a complete pain trying to get grown up styles/heels.

SwayingInTime · 02/07/2018 18:16

My size 4-6 5ft daughter buys mostly from ladies ranges as we find the styles and prices better as so much in these sizes goes into sales. ASOS and Miss Selfridge are good for very petite sizes we find.

dontcallmelen · 02/07/2018 18:17

I hasten to add, I do buy adult clothes but usually even petite ranges I have to get altered & sometimes if you just want a plain pair of jeans or leggings/Hoody, children’s stuff can do the job without the expense of alterations.

CountFosco · 02/07/2018 18:27

Some of the youth brands might be good for you since they have less vanity sizing than the supermarkets. In the 80s and 90s I was a 12, I'm slightly heavier but am routinely a 10 in most shops and sometimes fit an 8 and memorably bought a size 6 dress in Jigsaw! But still a size 12 in TopShop.

MistressDeeCee · 02/07/2018 18:37

DD is 5ft 1, and a curvy size 6. She mostly shops online:

BooHoo
Pretty Little Things
Missguided
ASOS
I Saw It First
Krisp

On the High Street it's H&M. Also Select, if they've a fitted as opposed to loose fitting size 6. She can get day to day casual wear in Primark or New Look, no problem.

Top Shop and Miss Selfridge have Petite collections too.

Generally not all the styles are "too young" if you're older than your 20s, you just have to shop around a bit

MrsJayy · 02/07/2018 18:40

My Dd got a playsuit from Primark last year she is 5ft 3 and it sat lovely on her

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/07/2018 18:44

I do.
I'm 5foot and a size 6-8, generally the 12-13 fits, I've had some great stuff, my favourite is a grey denim dungaree dress from Asda.

Soubriquet · 02/07/2018 18:44

I always buy kids clothes

Grin

Some shops I need 12-13 years and others I need 14-15years

So much easier than trying to find clothes that fit me in the ladies section

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/07/2018 18:46

Superdry sizing is tiny which is great for me, I love their dresses, I wear an xs.
