What do people think of brooches?

Are they very old-fashioned? I bought a plain grey t-shirt because I like the shape and have added a sparkly dragonfly brooch but really don’t know if I like the look. Please advise.

oops Blush

Looks lovely

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/06/2018 14:41

I like brooches on a jacket. Think they look weird on t-shirts - the fabric isn't heavy enough for them to sit properly.

Maybe try an iron on patch?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 24/06/2018 14:42

I think they are due a revival! I was watching a 90s sitcom and the main female characters always has a brooch on her jacket.

goose1964 · 24/06/2018 14:48

I have a maxi dress that's a bit everyday but when I add a sparkly brooch it transforms it into a posh frock.

Paintbox · 24/06/2018 14:51

Sorry pp, I disagree that it isn’t pulling the fabric, it’s clearly pulling, look at the lines in the fabric above the brooch

AjasLipstick · 24/06/2018 15:36

Lapsed seems cringey to me. Like 18th century fan fluttering. If you want a man to look at your chest, there are better ways to encourage it than coy brooch flicking.

Lunaballoon · 24/06/2018 15:37

Grin @ Lapsed. I had to look up embonpoint!

ScreamingValenta · 24/06/2018 15:37

I love a nice brooch on a velvet jacket!

Cliveybaby · 24/06/2018 15:42

I like them on coats and hats, looks a bit "random" on a t shirt
I wear them on my coat, it stops the lapels flapping around, which bugs me. I put a brooch on one, then a big safety pin (from underneath) so you can't see it on the other side.

MipMipMip · 24/06/2018 15:42

If you're worried about a brooch pulling at light fabric position it so the pin goes through the fabric, behind your bra step and through the fabric to faster. It works!

CisTerfsAreDoinItForTheShelves · 24/06/2018 15:42

Ooh no. Not on a t shirt.

surferjet · 24/06/2018 15:46

😂 at LapsedHumanist

TheKitchenWitch · 24/06/2018 15:50

I use them when tops and dresses are a bit gaping or missing a button, or sometimes to create a pointed/v or slightly ruched neckline on tops. I’d never wear one on the side or st the shoulder like you’re supposed to.
I do like them though and wish they’d get an update, they’re still considered rather frumpy.

BusterGonad · 24/06/2018 16:00

Maybe if the outfit was a bit more high fashion it could work, but I think as a regular outfit it doesn't really fit with the casual look.

SpectacularAardvark · 24/06/2018 17:04

I've read the word Brooch far too many times and now it looks weird. Why is it spelt like that? Looks like it should have an ooh sound rather than sounding like broach.
Apologies, I'm very tired.

dontcallmelen · 24/06/2018 18:32

My late Mum loved brooches, dd incorporated some of them into her bouquet when she got married, was a lovely nod to my dm.

OCSock · 24/06/2018 19:06

Better on coats and jackets where there's more fabric to support the weight of the brooch. Unless you wear it dead centre of the neckline on a dress or T-shirt.

NotMeNoNo · 24/06/2018 19:54

I'm getting into brooches because I've started wearing boat neck tops that don't work with necklace. I think a petite/lightweight one fine on a t shirt. I got these little acrylic ones from iamacrylic at a craft fair.

MissMarplesKnitting · 24/06/2018 19:58

Brooches are back 'in' jewellery fashion

But I think best on jacket/coat/scarf/hat and not t shirts.

I love an antique one on a black formal coat

makeupmaven · 24/06/2018 20:02

Lapsed I love your creative spirit. Grin

Ummmmgogo · 24/06/2018 20:07

I think you have a nice figure and your outfit looks effortlessly cool.

Floisme · 25/06/2018 10:15

I have a few 1950s/early 60s brooches that belonged to my mum. I originally kept them for sentimental reasons but now I really like them in their own right. I mostly wear one with something quite masculine e.g. on the collar or a men's raincoat or on a men's jumper.

I'd far rather see a brooch on a T shirt than a logo but I think the main problem, as others have said, is that the fabric probably won't be heavy enough. But it might work on the collar of a polo shirt.

Confusssed · 25/06/2018 10:25

It depends. I have a faux Chanel entwined CC brooch which I wear with plain knit jumpers. Have been complimented many times. But the fabric is heavy enough to support the weight of the brooch without dragging or pulling.

Underparmummy · 25/06/2018 14:04

I had a lovely vintage brooch, I used to wear it on my scarf in the winter.

Then I lost the scarf... so lost lovely brooch as well.
