What do I do with my engagement, wedding and eternity ring now?

Sadly I was widowed at a youngish age a few years ago, and as I've gradually started to "move on" I've stopped wearing my rings. I hope one day I will find another partner so I don't want to be pigeon-holed by them. But at the same time they are obviously precious (and of some value). I have thought about having them remade. The engagement ring is a decent solitaire, and the wedding and eternity rings both have diamonds around them. So basically there a good few stones of different sizes, and some platinum. Any idea how I might get these redesigned into another single dress ring, or earrings or a pendant? I don't do flashy, would just like an understated memento that I am happy to wear without sending out married/widowed signals. I don't know where to start with this idea, so suggestions welcome.

A beautiful out of earring or a bracelet would be lovely x

Jesus. *pair of earrings

InfiniteSheldon · 22/06/2018 21:45

Get them resized to fit your right hand?

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 22/06/2018 21:48

Take them to a jeweller and they can tell your your options, you can work with them to have a lovely piece (or two) that you can cherish forever.

If you're understated, you could have a beautiful solitaire diamond pendant on a fine chain and have your smaller diamonds in petite stacking rings, or set into a fine bangle, or made into modern studs with a scattering of diamonds set in.

There's lots of options- but you know what you're more likely to wear.

dragonslair · 22/06/2018 21:49

Thanks for the ideas, but how do I do that? Where do I find a jeweller? How do I come up with a design? Am bamboozled by the whole thing...
but really want to do something fitting.

You need a small independent jewellers workshop- not a high street 'big name' jeweller.

If you're on your local buy and sell pages or community pages- ask on there for recommendations- there's bound to have been somebody in your town/city/county that has had their jewellery remodelled and can point you in the right direction.

And remember- it costs nothing to have a conversation- it can be quite daunting but you don't need to agree to anything straight away.

If you happen to be near Glasgow I can recommend a place but otherwise I'd consult your local hive-mind to see where they go for jewellery repairs/remodelling.

Dont know where you are but you want someone like Caroline Quy, she has a website.

Tryingtogetitright · 22/06/2018 22:04

My friend is the jeweller at www.oaklandjewellery.com/ I know she has done similar in the past and made some beautiful pieces out of sentimental jewellery.

goose1964 · 22/06/2018 22:05

My sister had hers made into a necklace.

Always thought Harriet Kelsall's work is very lovely. Have them made into something awesome.

theladylovescupcakes · 22/06/2018 22:13

Birmingham's jewellery quarter has lots of places that would help you with this.

dragonslair · 22/06/2018 22:13

Thanks for all of these ideas. I will start exploring them. I'm feeling like this is going to be a really positive thing to do.

If you're anywhere near the midland try visiting the jewellery quarter, you'll be able to visit lots of independent jewellers in one setting, many of whom have workshops attached who can do this kind of thing.

kathryn77 · 22/06/2018 22:17

I had jewellery made into a ring by a lady called Lora lordham in the jewellery quarter. I met her once for ideas and then we went from there. She has a Facebook page and website. Was really smooth service and I love the result.

BackforGood · 22/06/2018 22:19

If you can get to Birmingham, go to the jewellery quarter.
If you've never been, it is like a small town, were 9 out of every 10 shops is a jewellers (the others just 'service' the people that work there - sandwich shops, etc).
It is where all the craftsmen and designers have their workshops.
Jewellery is also cheaper there, but what you would go for is the design skills.

CrabappleBiscuit · 22/06/2018 22:20

My friend found a local jewellery designer who remodelled her mum and dads wedding rings and mums engagement and eternity rings into a beautiful ring. It’s was a very positive thing for her.

Hessianbag · 22/06/2018 22:23

That's a lovely idea to keep using those precious items.
Whereabouts are you? Lots of independent places will remodel. I also think HM Samuels had an event where you could talk to a maker about remodelling jewellery.

This jeweller looks fabulous - it's one I've bookmarked to get all my old bits of jewellery recycled into one piece at some point!

NuffingChora · 22/06/2018 22:27

If you're anywhere near Glasgow, there's a company called Blair and Sheridan who do beautiful work.

sexnotgender · 22/06/2018 22:28

I had my engagement ring made using the stones from my mums ring. A lovely family jeweller in Edinburgh did it for a reasonable price. DONT go to a high street chain.

Theimpossiblegirl · 22/06/2018 22:32

I have pmed you the details of a lovely jeweller I have come across.
Wishing you all the best.

Loonoon · 22/06/2018 22:51

It depends where you are but I agree an independent jewellers is your best bet. Go to an area with lots of competition to get ideas and a good price. In Birmingham there is the Jewellery Quarter, Hatton Garden in London, the Lanes in Brighton and I am sure there must be others. Good luck with it.

thedevilinablackdress · 22/06/2018 22:55

I like this jeweller's work and have seen in her Instagram that she does bespoke pieces from client's existing jewellery
www.alisonmacleod.com/

verite · 23/06/2018 07:22

If you are close to London, Hatton gardens is place to go to. Must be at least 30 independent jewellers there. Just go and speak to a few. And they expect you to haggle! Prices are not fixed.
