Friend just had baby girl (has an older boy).

Want to get her a pretty gift of shoes or clothes (not the basics) for the baby.

Any inspiration?

Monsoon are always good for baby girl stuff. Especially if there's a sale on.

tortoiseSHELL · 23/05/2007 22:42

When I had dd, what I really wanted to get (and was the first thing I bought) was a smocked dress from John Lewis with matching pants! But something like this is lovely as well!

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/05/2007 22:44

Something that washes and tumbles dries well.
Something very easy to get on and off if you buy anything for under 6 months.
Something that is right for the season when she will fit it (we were given some lovely summer stuff in the right size for dd to be in the middle of winter!).

As long as it abides by those criteria (and doesn't include a hat, mitts, or bib) then pretty much anything.

RainingCatsandDogs · 23/05/2007 22:44

Yes Monsoon can be lovely - anything in particular from the current collection?

daisy roots soft shoes, the pull on leather ones, I was delighted with them with cute flowers on for DD

TooTicky · 23/05/2007 22:46

Nothing pink or pastelly.

RainingCatsandDogs · 23/05/2007 22:47

Thanks for reminding me not to buy anything impractical but it has to be pretty! She has been wishing for a girl!

Nothing in size newborn or 0-3 months - she'll get loads - much better to get 3-6 or 6-9 or something like that. I was swamped by newborn clothes and my dd just didnt wear half of it!!

TooTicky · 23/05/2007 22:48

How about some of these ? They stay on, wash really well and don't go stiff or slippery-bottomed like the leather ones. (The bottoms are really tough too, although thin and supple - you could walk over broken glass in them. Really.)

Agree with the shoes but will probably buy her clothes also.
I'm not the greatest fan of pastel pink but maybe for your longed for baby girl?

I got tonnes of frilly dresses for the dd's. One of the best things really was a pack of 3 sleepsuits as my babies live in those for the first few weeks and you can never have too many sleepsuits

Angeliz · 23/05/2007 22:50

just actually read your post!

MrsBadger · 24/05/2007 08:55

Either get a pretty item in a practical fabric (eg smocked dress and pants in plain white cotton) or a reallly pretty version of something practical (eg flowery romper suit).

Have a look at Rachel Riley but try not to faint at the prices - they do have adorable rompers though.

oranges · 24/05/2007 08:59

omg, 55 pounds for a babygro?

MrsBadger · 24/05/2007 09:01

I did warn you - strictly for inspiration only!

(though for a christening their £95 linen baby night gown thing is a lot nicer than some of the exorbitant frilly things out there)

pesme · 24/05/2007 09:02

my sil bought me a gorgeous cashmere hat which i used all the time but dd was a january baby. other favourites where adorable little soft cardies. dresses were just daft imo.

oranges · 24/05/2007 09:03

ds got given something from rachel riley - i had no idea it was that expensive. Don't thing I thanked the giver nearly enough.

oranges · 24/05/2007 09:04

think

Rantmum · 24/05/2007 09:06

Specialist baby stores often carry some gorgeous french clothes for baby girls and they are not restricted to pinky pink (a pet grievance of mine). Also Vertbaudet has clothes like

this which I think is gorgeous and available for 3 mths plus.

chocorange · 24/05/2007 13:42

I personally love babies in dungarees, still cute but much more usable and practical than dresses which just bunch up and make the baby uncomfortable imo

like these top row 4th along

actually the stripey romper suit and bib set on that page is cute as well

or this

or these

or this romper

MrsBadger · 24/05/2007 14:16

rompers

fab

you don't see enough of them these days

chocorange · 24/05/2007 16:09

I had spring babies and they spent their entire first summers in rompers when it was hot and dungarees when a bit cooler - comfy to sleep in, no sweaty waistband issues and adorable to look at - whats not to like?

RainingCatsandDogs · 24/05/2007 20:31

I'm inspired - just got to shop now!

Bargain Alert for little girls!
Gingham is always nice. I cant abide any writing or syndicated characters on a tiny baby (sorry TortoiseShell.)
