tanning moisturiser bullshit

I wanted to wear a skirt this weekend Envy

So I wapped on some dove summer glow yesterday. I pranced around semi naked for aaaages so it would definitely be dry before any clothes went near it etc and today my legs just look like they have mucky blotches Envy

What am I missing? Did I not work it in enough/too much? Do I have the wrong skin? Is it worth putting more on and hoping the non mucky looking patches soak some in this time or is it just going to darken the mucky patches. Shall I just resign myself to wearing jeans instead?

This happened to me too! I used to think I was pretty good at fake tan application (important life skill!) but that was pre dd so I thought I'd play it safe and go for the moisturiser one everyone on here seems to say is foolproof. I don't know what I did wrong either. I am going back to normal fake tan. Am going to give Cocoa Brown one a try tonight.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 20/06/2018 16:34

I've always had a good result with the Dove one but I do think it needs to be rubbed in evenly, which, if you're thinking of it as a sort of moisuriser might not be clear. Two applications (with a gap of at least an hour in between) often give a better result.

Did you exfoliate first? That can make a difference.

If the darker bits are just a little bit darker I'd just do a second application. If they're quite noticeable I'd have a normal scrub (not trying to get the colour off, just a normal exfoliating wash) and try again. Rub in any shiny areas before letting it dry.

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 20/06/2018 16:37

I think you are only supposed to apply a little (your skin isn't supposed to be wet for ages) and used daily it's supposed to gradually day by day start to tan you....it sounds like you put on too much...use just a little each day so that your skin can build up a glowing tan

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 20/06/2018 16:39

If you want to remove the tan already on your legs then go somewhere like boots, superdug etc and look for fake tan remover (I think you can get it in wipes too, where you swipe your skin and it has something in it that lifts off the tan)...if you have no luck finding it then try Amazon ,Grin

I’ve been using this and been really happy with it. I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I’ve been applying it with nitrile gloves, and i know it’s a moisturiser, but I’ve been putting on baby oil first.

Sweetpea55 · 20/06/2018 18:17

Iv used this and also St Tropez ,
I exfoliate and then rub ordinary body lotion into knees and tops of feet ankles, and leave it for about an hour, Then rub it in well with a applicator mit,,Leave it for a few mins and then gently wipe across knees and ankles with a dry towel

thedevilinablackdress · 20/06/2018 19:21

Bollocks to it, life is too short. Embrace your own skin tone 😁

IfNot · 20/06/2018 19:28

Seconded. I can't be arsed with all this "summer ready " bollocks.

I've taken my vest off and I'm wearing sandals. Ta dah!
Maybe I'm bitter cos any kind of fake tan makes me either yellow or mucky looking.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/06/2018 19:31

Vest off @IfNot !! Steady on. It's barely double figures here in The North. We are promised some Summer next week...

marciagetscreamed · 20/06/2018 19:43

I agree with the PPS who said fuck it and don't bother.

I, however, am vain and feel the need to alter my skin tone. Make of that what you will 😆

Dove gradual tan is AWFUL, and I have tried approximately 180 gradual tans in my years.

The absolute dogs bollocks of gradual tans is Vita Liberate (available on amazon or QVC) and I have just run out and am panicking.

Always, always, even when applying gradual tan, rub your knees, wrists and elbows with a towel as soon as you have put the cream on.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 20/06/2018 19:59

marciagetscreamed ooh exciting, I ordered this from Amazon last week. Can't remember who recommended it but glad to hear someone else say it's good.

Having said that I bought Bondi Sands gradual tan because apparently everyone on earth uses and loves it, and it was about three days of heavy application before I saw any colour at all. I'm very white and had to double-check that it was actually gradual tan and not just moisturiser.

I like Dove and Neutrogena but ideally looking for a cruelty-free brand.

emma6776 · 20/06/2018 21:05

Dove gradual tan is awful! Worst I’ve ever used - my favourite is Skinny tan gradual tan - it’s amazing - never streaks and is in offer for less than £6 at Superdrug at the moment.

TumbleTussocks · 21/06/2018 07:23

Daft question alert! Are you supposed to put it everywhere: face, neck etc? I just want something to take the glare off my legs?

Tisgrand · 21/06/2018 12:23

I bought Lancome flash bronzer which said "for legs" but i used it all over (except my face). Next morning i could see some streaks and thought it was a disaster - until I showered and a gorgeous glowing tan was revealed. I've tried loads, cheap and dear, and thrown them all away after one try. This one I'll definitely buy again. I bought the Bondi Sands facial tanner, its barely made any difference and stinks so much I'll be throwing it out too. Btw the lancome hardly smelt at all.

HarshingMyMellow · 21/06/2018 12:38

Haven't read it all so sorry if I'm repeating someone else.

Best thing to do is exfoliate. Rub baby oil on your legs 30 minutes before and then have a hot bath (as hot as you can stand), st tropez do a tan remover mitt which is like an exfoliating glove but with finer 'grits'. Get a decent scrub and then glove then rub in circular motions.
Can also use a paste of lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda/baking powder. Or washing up liquid.

Shaving can also work.

In future, to avoid patches, exfoliate and shave (see a theme here) 24 hours before applying tan, apply it in circular motions working from feet upwards. Don't use any oil based products before tanning (including soaps, shower gels) and make sure any deodorants, perfumes, moisturisers are completely removed prior to application.

Speaking from MANY tan disasters over the years Grin

HarshingMyMellow · 21/06/2018 12:43

Also..

  • Talc after you've tanned stops you from feeling tacky and also prevents you sweating it off.
  • Latex gloves give a much easier/even application than a mitt.
  • Add moisturiser to ankles, feet, hands and elbows (dry skin areas) before tanning.
  • Vaseline on finger/toe nails and around hairline to stop them from looking ridiculous.

The Bondi Sands gradual mousse and liquid gold are the best gradual tans I've ever used.

ThenCameTheFools · 21/06/2018 13:13

Could you link to the Vita Liberata please? Am about to go for a gradual tanner to lift the blue tinge from my mozzarella legs!

BusterGonad · 21/06/2018 19:20

I've just ordered the Vita Liberta gradual tanner. I hope it works as I'm off in holiday soon and at the moment I'm looking decidedly like a dead jelly fish that's been beached! 😩

naynayba · 21/06/2018 22:51

Wow thanks for all these tips!?

I embrace my skin tone, this is just to save others'eyes from the glare B)

yolandafostersfridge · 21/06/2018 23:04

Absolutely agree that Vita Liberata gradual tan is the holy grail of all tan products, I have pretty much tried them all!

Gammeldragz · 21/06/2018 23:13

I nearly started a thread on this yesterday! I bought the garner one, then remembered that I tend to buy a gradual tanner every year and it never works out, I assume I have magically acquired the ability to do it and am always proved wrong. Every year I forget and buy another...

If I apply after shaving I get dark dots from the pores, so I'm guessing I should leave it a day?

Chimchar · 22/06/2018 06:44

I bought one last week from Primark. It was £3.
It's a bit streaky, but I suspect that's more to do with my crap application than the product. The colour is great...not too dark at all, and very natural.

ThenCameTheFools · 22/06/2018 08:00

I have just ordered the vita liberata one so will report back!

BusterGonad · 22/06/2018 08:25

I can't embrace my natural colour when my arms are 5 shades darker with freckles then my legs. Legs are pure white, arms are slightly golden!
