Help Growing out a pixie.

Help me sort out my hair please. I look like worzel gummidges aunt Sally.
I'm trying to grow a pixie style into a bob shape. I have thick wavy curly hair and am 6 months into growing it. I've had it trimmed 3 times and the hairdresser has been letting the sides grow and keeping the back short.

It looked fine until after the last cut and now the side bits seem to stick out lor curl up like a pair of horns. I think that perhaps the bits at the sides are cut too fine -I can't make them thicker. I try to tuck them behind my ears or pin them flat. What do I do?

You need height on top to balance it out a bit. I bought a few different hair accessories and wore one every day and quiffed the top of my hair. It helps.
The Justin beiber stage is the worst.

NotARegularPenguin · 16/06/2018 22:28

I feel your pain. Sadly my hair is too thick and heavy to get any height on top. I’ve just invested in some Aveda straightening potions in the hope my crazy curly side bits might be tamed. Only turned up today so not used them yet.

aglassofroseplease · 16/06/2018 22:45

Thanks @seymoursmyman and @NotARegularPenguin I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering with sticking out hair - I could almost put up with the curly horns look if it was the same on both sides but mine is a more asymmetrical look with one side sticking up and the other side curling under or staying flat.
I almost feel like getting it cut short again when it's at its most messy. I'll keep trying though with clips etc

I know what you mean about getting it cut again out of frustration. Five times I’ve said I’m growing it and five times I’ve had it cut back to a pixie. Think this is the longest I’ve got it so far, I’m nearly needing a hairbrush again!

The last time I tried to grow out my very short hair was around 15 years ago. I was able to go for the Bjork look. I split my hair into sections and twisted each one and pinned them all over my head. Or I wore a scarf, head band or a hat in the winter. Inventive plaits and braids work well too. You can incorporate shorter hair into a French braid with practise.

I'm on this road too....

My hair is wavy on the top layers, I was having the back cut short and keeping the top longer but thinned. Sometimes the odd sticky out horn , I can't o the 'tucked behind the ears' thing

I started using DD Babybliss brush (the dryer and rotating one) smaller barrel.
Normally I wash or soak my hair in the shower and by the time I get to work its a bit lairy . But if I wash it at night , and use my brush on dry or slightly damp, its ok.
I bought some straighteners last week , the tiny ones Smile really cute.

Sadly I can't pull off grips or scarves.
I'll give it a couple of weeks and go for a trim ,

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/06/2018 10:03

These threads are why when people say Its only hair it'll grow to someone considering a cropped cut , I'm thinking
Whoah, easier said than done
Unless the "ir'll grow" advisors have the very sleek hair that just sirs there growing straight ,

HildaZelda · 17/06/2018 10:30

I'm 10 months in. Started growing out a pixie last August. I went down the other road and haven't had it cut at all. Hasn't been touched. I did get a slight bit of mullet going on briefly but not too bad. I seem to have had a growth spurt this month and the back has evened out again.
It'll be a year in August so I'm going to leave it until then and see what I can do with it after that.

I feel your pain however. (Hair) solidarity sisters!

aglassofroseplease · 17/06/2018 12:56

Hi thanks for the support - we need to stick together I'm almost ready to wear a hat - I'm thinking I might take a pair of scissors to the side bits as I think my hairdresser thinned them out too much hence them flicking up and out, so I'm thinking of a bit of DIY. Maybe taking a couple of centimetres off
@HildaZelda I can see the attraction of letting it grow and not letting a hairdresser touch I - mines been messed about and made worse by hairdressers

I might well swerve the hairdressers till I've got enough length to have it shaped , I googled JUstin Bieber Hair and I can't look worse !

I love The Bieber after being forced by DD to see him at Hyde Park , but Justin ............... mirror ? Shock

NotARegularPenguin · 17/06/2018 13:15

I don’t suit scarves and I don’t think I could pull off the Bjorke look either. Sadly.

NotARegularPenguin · 17/06/2018 13:16

I take it this is the Bieber hairstyle people are referencing. I have to say that is pretty spot on for my current hair!

BettyBaggins · 17/06/2018 13:18

I love my hair really short or really long but in between it does loads of stupid sticky out bits so am keeping it long for now.

aglassofroseplease · 17/06/2018 13:47

Yep, I think that's my hair - I'll call it the Justin - the only difference is the age - otherwise I'd pass for him ......

Currently sat in the bathroom dying my hair purple in a sad attempt to look edgy. You know, combat the Bieber barnet.

aglassofroseplease · 17/06/2018 19:10

Good luck @NotARegularPenguin better purple and edgy that have a beiber barnet
I'm feeling empowered as today I took the scissors to the wispy too thin side bits and took a couple of centimetres off making them look a bit more chunky and then I fluffed my hair up to get the wild and edgy look

NotARegularPenguin · 17/06/2018 21:57

Well hair is a bit purple. Gave me chance to try out the Aveda styling products. The smooth infusion has made a difference to the waviness of my hair, it’s not 100% straight but is better. The whip styling stuff doesn’t make a difference to any kinks but gives my hair nice texture so overall makes it look more styled. I’m liking both.

seymoursmyman · 19/06/2018 12:46

This was my peak beiber horror stage. Male teen heartthrob is not a look I rocked.
I also dyed my hair bright red during the growing out phase. Went from short fire engine red in December to just touching my shoulder blonde now.
Hang in there, it gets better Smile

You need a growing out hairstyle. Find a haidresser who understands thick wavy hair.

trigger2 · 19/06/2018 14:25

I’ve grown out a pixie cut twice, I have a lot of wavy hair so it’s been interesting. I always got regular cuts to ensure the shape wasn’t too bad when growing out, I also played with the colour. You need to trust your hairdresser, do they know you/your hair well ?

aglassofroseplease · 19/06/2018 18:24

Hi thanks for you messages

@trigger2 @MikeUniformMike I need to search for a new hairdresser who can work with my thick wavy hair, as the one I've been to recently (who I like) seems to want to thin it out. Does anyone know a good one in the East Midlands??

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 19/06/2018 18:27

I don't, sorry. Someone with thick wavy hair might be a good bet. Or ask someone who's hair you admire.

trigger2 · 19/06/2018 18:41

OP are there any Facebook groups for your area ? You might get some recommendations there.

My hair, although wavy, is fine but I have a lot of it. I had to get the sides thinned a bit to avoid the mushroom look. I found straightening it and then using wax helped during this stage helped, and I’m happy to have mine tucked behind my ears. I tried the clips, scarves etc but it didn’t really work for me.

For me avoiding the mushroom look was harder than avoiding the mullet look 😆

frogprincess84 · 19/06/2018 18:48

Undercut? Back and sides. Will take some of the bulk out of the awkward growing out stage and help it look more like an intended hair cut. Then when you get to the bob length you want you can grow out the underneath in secret.

frogprincess84 · 19/06/2018 18:54

Heres an admittedly not great pic of miley cyrus with the kind of thing im taking about. Shaved sides mean the hair doesnt sit out in funny shapes at your ears. When youre growing out the shaved bits you can hide it under what has already grown out.
