If you buy clothes online which websites do you shop from and how much do you spend a month?

Just being nosey!

I am a big online shopper and particularly love the 'bargain' websites such as asos and very.co.uk, particularly the clothes on sale.

I think I have a bit of a full blown shopping addiction but can just about afford it because everything I buy is relatively cheap and I don't do anything else (no drinking, smoking, meals out, no secret drug habit although a bit of a secret chocolate habit). Also I do all of the housework in our house and I work so use my spare money to pay myself for all the tasks I do with clothes, that's another justification.

I spend about £220 a month give or take.

How much do you spend?

People buying loads of clothes (bloggers!) really annoys me. It's so wasteful.

Bloggers are gifted a lot and sell a lot of it on. Not as wasteful as my hairdresser who told me today she throws away £1.50 t-shirts from Primark after her son wears them once!

I spend more than average but spend more than average per item so I don't really have more clothes than other people. My clothes are worn again and again, I only put things for recycling when they are worn out. Things that aren't worn go to the charity shop.

SoddingUnicorns · 16/06/2018 18:36

i don't understand why it bothers certain posters how much others spend.

Neither do I. Having been skint as fuck for years, and relying on birthday and Christmas presents for new clothes, and making things last until they were literally indecent I'm bloody well enjoying being able to buy what I like. It might not be fancy, but it makes me happy.

This is actually very dangerous. At all stages of the manufacturing process from fibre processing to weaving to cloth making to dyeing to garment manufacture, material is treated heavily with compounds and chemicals to inhibit moulds and mildews, to pass through machinery easily and with the finished garment to kill insects and their larvae during storage and transportation. That is quite apart from the machine oils, finishing sprays and dye compounds themselves.

If the average person wears a new, unwashed garment occasionally when it is purchased then it will almost certainly not matter. But for someone to do so regularly, with garments where short cuts will be taken in order to produce them as cheaply as possible, and that someone is a child, then it can potentially be dangerous.

This year I've had more disposable income so I've been averaging around £150 a month on clothes (a bit more occasionally). I've been buying lots from Hush and finding that the style and fit of their clothes suits me so I keep a lot of it. I buy a lot from ASOS online but return almost all of it - it never seems to look or fit quite like I want it to.
I also buy a fair amount online from Boden and often buy shoes online.
Anywhere else I shop I tend to go into store - I have an H & M just down the road so that's probably the shop I physically visit the most.
My 16 year old ds has also developed a bit of a shopping habit the last two months so I've cut down on my spending a bit as he's seen lots of things he likes. He'll be going into 6th form in September and not wearing uniform anymore so I'm helping him update his wardrobe a bit.

Thanks for your comments, it's comforting to know I'm not alone.

Do any of you hide your purchases from your other halves?! I have been known to do that sometimes!

Also have a nosey family member who thinks I'm spending loads on each item and I want to scream 'this was £8 from asos' but I end up just saying it politely. If she knew how hard I had to work with the kids / around the house she would know why I needed something to do to let off steam. Annoying.

I'm astounded how much everyone spends on clothes! When do you wear it all?
I would guess this year's expenditure to date is 1 x £15 pair of jeans, 1 x pair of chinos and 1 x shorts from M&S, I think it was just over £60 total and 3 x packs of underwear from JL, pick up from local Waitrose £36. So £15/month on average. But I might have bought the underwear last year, I can't remember.
I have bought a couple of Tshirts in a local charity shop and that is it.
I could afford to spend more, a lot more, but don't see the point, and luckily dress code for work is smart casual so jeans/chinos are fine.

bristolbabe389 · 17/06/2018 20:34

Yes I know it is a lot of money to spend per month but don't most people have a way to spend money frivolously on a regular basis? Going out? Eating out? Cars on tick. I get a real kick out of buying clothes online, unwrapping them when I get home, trying them on. Finding bargains!! It's the whole process for me. And I get just as big a kick from giving clothes I no longer wear to charity (which I have to do regularly to make more room in the wardrobe Grin ).

Ariela I spend lots because I love fashion (and work in it)! I totally understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea though. :)

makeupmaven · 17/06/2018 20:44

I do wish I had a less expensive hobby though, hehe...

Brendatheblender · 17/06/2018 20:48

I probably spend £50 max each month, if that. I tend to do a big A/W and S/S each season from Monki and H&M.

I’ve started picking up bits in charity shops and have found some brilliant bits for just a couple of quid.

Since having kids I have found shopping a bit more challenging due to the change in my body, my youngest is 2 and I think I have just it cracked now. Just wish most choices in shops weren’t cropped, not a good look with my mum tum!

Hunter007 · 17/06/2018 20:53

About 500 per month. I tend to buy good stuff that lasts. Mainly designed but I do always get stuff on sale or from outlet.com

Polly1977 · 17/06/2018 21:03

I buy a lot but send back a lot too. Since January I’ve spent £200 so that’s about £40 a month. I have great charity shops near me and get some great stuff from them.

rainbowfudgee · 17/06/2018 21:12

I buy most of my clothes from ebay- new or nearly new. I like looking for interesting things and rarely spend more than £10 on an item. Probably spend £50/ month. It's convenient and cheaper than paying £30 for a t shirt in the shops.

AsTheMilesTheyDisappear · 17/06/2018 21:37

I have spent on average £50/month on clothes/shoes/bags for the last 5 years. I write it all down as I adore fashion and could go crazy if unchecked- and I don't want to.

I buy from Cos sales, Boden (discount codes), Warehouse, Hush, H and M, Zara, Gap and TopShop.

rightknockered · 17/06/2018 22:03

I shop because I enjoy it. I have no other vices, I love clothes. I enjoy fashion, I have three children with autism so life can be very stressful. I came out of an abusive marriage 4 years ago, and still finding my feet, so it is a distraction for me. I buy only what I can afford and think carefully about purchases with stuff sitting in my baskets sometimes for weeks at at time before I buy. I think I deserve nice things in life.
I might feel rough, but I hate looking it.

AsTheMilesTheyDisappear · 17/06/2018 22:27

Good for right you do deserve it. That's one of the reasons I started recording it. To remind myself I wasn't going crazy, I was spending well within my means and that actually it's important to me to wear nice clothes.

It's not remotely important to dh so I can feel extravagant. But he spends on beer, wine, snacks, cooking stuff where I drink very little. So I think £12.50/week on clothes is fine and not more than I deserve.

Ellapaella · 17/06/2018 22:31

I make no apologies for what I spend on clothes.. I've had several years when I haven't been able to spend hardly anything as our financial priorities were elsewhere but now I've a bit more disposable income I indulge myself because I enjoy it!

BestZebbie · 17/06/2018 22:35

Ebay.
By which I mean Ted Baker, Seasalt, Boden, and the odd other item which I searched for by type instead of brand (eg: red jeans). Maybe £50 a month, but it goes in phases of buying six or eight items then nothing for several months.

I did just buy some FitFlops from their own website, which is entirely the fault of Mumsnet.

Timefortea99 · 17/06/2018 22:35

About 400 pounds a month in Spring and Summer. About 100 a month in Autumn and Winter. I don’t like winter clothes so only buy the necessary, although last year I seem to have an obsession for wool scarves and hats!
