Do I need someone to 'do' my colours or can I work out what they are myself?

I'm trying to make myself not look like a bag of shite, I'm hoping to ditch my current heaving wardrobe full of clothes and create a capsule wardrobe that I'm comfortable in and looks nice.
I don't know what suits me and what colours I should wear, can I work this out myself if so I need my colours done and a personal shopper to teach me the ways?

I'm 5ft, size 12, extremely hourglass shaped, big hip and giant boobs but smaller waist.

Dark brown hair with reddish undertones, blue/grey eyes and a pale skin (have been called and 'Englishman Rose?') But my skin has a tendency to go very rosy red (rosacea and blushing)

I have no idea but have been wondering the same, so I'm wait to see where this thread goes.
I'm 5' 10" and a size 14, grey eyes, dark blonde hair and pale skin with a tendency to go so red! (Blushing, over exertion, etc)

Borris · 14/06/2018 14:33

Another one hoping for enlightenment!

I'm not naturally stylish and have looked into the colour thing but it's sooooo expensive

LucyFox · 14/06/2018 14:40

You can “do” your colours yourself if you understand the concept ... but it’s not easy if you’ve never done it before. First step is to think what colours you wear & feel great in vs colours that make you look ill/dull or that you simply don’t like etc

from your description though, you sound like jewel colours & clear tones would suit, but not earthy colours (so Navy not Brown, Scarlet not coral, buttercup yellow not mustard)

PuppyMonkey · 14/06/2018 14:46

TBH I think it’s very hard to judge what “suits” you all by yourself iyswim.

My friend had her colours done (years ago) and was advised to bring someone else along to offer a range of opinions - it worked out really well.

The adviser had loads of sheets of fabric in all the possible tones and colours imaginable so she spent ages holding them all up to friend’s skin. I don’t think you’d be able to replicate that on your own.

Was really interesting for me to watch how some colours just really brought friend to life, others were just meh.

fedupandnogin · 14/06/2018 15:29

I've had it done (it was a present) and I was a winter /jewel colours. I went home and threw away all my browns and oranges etc. You are a similar colouring and size and shape to me. If you are revamping your wardrobe you also need to think about what style and shape of clothes suit you as well as colours.

Diamonddealeroncemore · 14/06/2018 15:59

I just went online and worked it out. My colouring is similar to yours OP, dark hair, pale skin and blue eyes and I reckon I’m a ‘cool winter’. Certainly jewel colours look good on me, although I don’t wear them often, I do wear a lot of navy and white though.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 14/06/2018 16:04

You have similar colouring to me (before I went grey). Like others have said, jewel tones - reds and purples were particularly good on me. Still are. :) I also suited burgundy and burnt orange. Mustard, khaki and beige - to the chazza shop with them!

This quiz will give you an idea. I'm a spring and got the same result from the quiz

endthefarts · 14/06/2018 21:46

A good place to start is to think of a colour that you know makes you look horrible. Most of us can identify a shade that makes us look utterly washed out and ill. I look bloody awful in pale lilac and baby blue. That suggests that I suit warm colours and darker colours. I am a deep autumn which fits that well.

The problem comes if you can’t see what makes you look rough, and some people can’t especially if it’s a colour that they love so want to wear a lot. I worked my colours out in my teens and had a hard time accepting that I look best in sludge greens and rusts and horrible in nicer colours.

spidereye · 14/06/2018 22:49

You sound like a clear spring (same as me) and I worked it out from an ancient 1970s Color Me Beautiful book (from the library)

Casmama · 14/06/2018 22:50

Check out this website. Select shop by colour from the index and then check out each of the seasons.
Pick your favourite or the one that contains the most colours you think suit you.

PandaG · 14/06/2018 22:55

Having your colours done is expensive, but for me it was worth every penny. I am so much more confident in my choices, and often buy clothes from charity shops as I know they suit me...or alternatively buy the odd more expensive item as I know it is just right. I've had my style done too, again well worth it for me

NotMeNoNo · 14/06/2018 23:31

If you have the money I would do the consultation. You get a lot of details on best colours within your season, hair, makeup, colours for near your face etc. It's the cost of 2 or 3 decent items of clothing.

Griefbacon · 14/06/2018 23:37

Just did my quiz. I’m faded natural red baud which was copper. Pale skin. Blue grey eyes and cool pink toned.
It said I’m summer warm and likely had mousy hair. Hmmm

HangersOn · 14/06/2018 23:44

I got my colours done, and I do think it was worth it. I wouldn’t have worked it out myself. But style of clothes also matters - so worth thinking about that too, once you know your colours.

toastlover · 15/06/2018 07:42

Can anyone recommend someone that does colours in the north west and also is it possible to get "your style" done too?

NotMeNoNo · 15/06/2018 16:25

I have to say that probably due to low confidence, I was convinced I was an "autumn" , went around in brown and khaki all the time for years. The colour consultation gave me winter instead, albeit at the autumn end of the winter spectrum. So not everyone can judge what their best colours are! Despite brown hair and Hazel eyes I have very cool pale skin.

ProperLavs · 15/06/2018 17:28

I had my colours done. It took 212 hours and was quite intense. I knew what colours I liked wearing but wanted to know if there were other ones that suited me and If I was on the right track.
When the woman did my colours I had to cover my hair with a turban and also my clothes in a white gown .
It took me a while to look past the colours she was holding up and see what they did to my face.
It turned out that was an autumn , as I had thought BUT I am infact warm toned and not cool as I presumed. The undertone of your skin is also important.
I would say it's pretty hard to do for yourself as you don't have the range of colours in different hues and shades to make that decision. it's also pretty impossible to do on your own.

ProperLavs · 15/06/2018 17:35

ha ha no it didn't take THAT long - round about 2.5 Wink

Paintbox · 15/06/2018 17:35

That does sound intense proper, 212 hours?!!! Wink

Deathraystare · 16/06/2018 10:35

I suspect I am a Spring and the quiz agreed!

GinaCarbonara · 16/06/2018 11:22

Where have you gone to have your colours done?

UtterlyDesperate · 16/06/2018 11:27

My friend had hers done with someone who was training in the process, at a hefty discount - might be worth looking around to find a trainee?

BusterGonad · 16/06/2018 12:41

I've just done the quiz and I'm a cool winter. It makes sense as I've got many things in those shades.

Applepudding2018 · 17/06/2018 12:05

Have a look for website 'pretty your world ' . There is a quiz to go through for the seasons / shades, examples of some celebrities which she has placed into the season / shade group and also some info on 'styles '.

She sells colour swatches, make up etc but I just sign up to the newsletter and look at the blog occasionally.

I come out as a 'soft summer' which I think is right for me .
