Will they secretly hate me? Will they write BUM on my forehead in waterproof mascara

Thank you. You've all given me the confidence not to dash out to buy something new that I'll never wear again

They won't secretly hate you as long as you're honest, I recently asked at a Charlotte tilbury counter about it and they said it was fine but either you pay £35 or buy products to that value, I expect different places have diffe rent rules/prices or if you just explain you want help they might just do it out of the kindness of their hearts. Maybe.

Bobbi Brown do great makeup tutorials for the non-Kardashian-inclined but you’d need to be quite brazen to then walk away without buying anything. A mascara would set you back 25 quid.

Lisa Eldridge does good, classic make up tutorials. I am rubbish at make up but find her ones easy to follow and effective
