If you are very large busted...

What dress styles do you gravitate toward?

Thinking about my bridesmaids dresses and two of my bridesmaids are large of boob (38GG and 36K) and want them to be comfortable. I will of course ask them but just as a guide as I’m doing my first looking. I will probably buy bigger and get them fitted properly by a tailor.

I’m envisaging four bridesmaids in the same colour/fabric but different cut dresses.

I'm a similar bust size. I would not want strapless or a high neck dress as unflattering and uncomfortable. Something that has a fitted waist so that I don't look like a walking marquee and no ruffles, I don't need to draw any more attention to my boobs.

Something that either has decent built in bust support or of a style that I can still wear a bra.

Mookatron · 08/06/2018 11:17

Probs v neck or deep square neck. Not boat neck ( it is so elegant but not for the large norked woman).

crunchtime · 08/06/2018 11:18

no halternecks!

i am a 38gg and if i wear a dress i like a v neck
wrap style good too

FaithEverPresent · 08/06/2018 11:18

Avoid halter neck styles too as they can make you look bigger.

ScreamingValenta · 08/06/2018 11:18

Exactly what Curlywurlywurly described.

LemonBee · 08/06/2018 11:18

Definitely a square neck or scoop neck

Figmentofimagination · 08/06/2018 11:24

V neck is very good. Wide straps as well, no thin straps as it just makes the chest area look larger.

KirstenRaymonde · 08/06/2018 11:25

Thanks - definitely no strapless! I’m a 32E and even I need to be sure a bra goes with everything.

Have to be able to wear a supportive bra, so no strapless, spaghetti straps or weird backless things going on.

I personally like V-neck or scoop neck, and a dress that goes in at the waist so I don't look matronly.

crunchtime · 08/06/2018 11:33

no empire line

KirstenRaymonde · 08/06/2018 11:33

What about something like this? www.mixbridal.com/model-0117879_526-Mustard.html

I think the 38GG might also like short sleeves rather than straps so thinking about that.

crunchtime · 08/06/2018 11:48

you'd have to do trying on really would you?

Is the lady who is a 38gg quite big? i am the same size and a size 20. you need to bear that in mind.
is that the colour you want?

KirstenRaymonde · 08/06/2018 11:55

Yes that’s probably the colour I want. It’s hard to find which is why I’ll probably have to order online/specially made. It’s not very easy to find. The 38GG is a 16 sometimes 18 but taller. The 36K is only about a 10/12 on the rest of her, but the boobs mean she has to buy much bigger.

OP posts:
crunchtime · 08/06/2018 12:08

is the 38gg really a 38 then? I wonder if it would be worth a trip to bravissimo or similar to get refitted before trying dresses on?

I really think you might be bettter finding a dress maker and having them made to fit. probably wouldn't be any more expensive than buying altering of you found someone small and local

Lululota · 08/06/2018 12:10

I went to a wedding recently (US) and all the bridesmaids wore maxi infinity dresses in black. All were tied differently but were super flattering on the larger ladies. I'm sure they are the type of dress that would be worn again as well.

KirstenRaymonde · 08/06/2018 12:29

@crunchtime yeh I took her to Bravissimo last year and it was correct then, but she’s lost some weight since then so will get her refitted when she’s lost a bit more.

OP posts:
KirstenRaymonde · 08/06/2018 12:30

She is broader of back though

OP posts:
KirstenRaymonde · 08/06/2018 12:31

I do like the infinity dresses but one of my bridesmaids is having them at her wedding next year, where I am bridesmaid, and kind of want something different

Buxbaum · 08/06/2018 12:31

Completely agree with PP about the need to be able to wear a decent bra. Nothing with an empire line or seamed cups, because their breasts won’t fit in the fabric available.

When I was most recently a bridesmaid I wore a Coast maxi dress with a matching chiffon shrug. I would have felt very exposed and inappropriate in the church without it, as the dress had quite a deep v neck.

One more thing to consider- if it does prove tricky to something for everyone then I’ve seen some beautiful examples of wedding parties with non-matching bridesmaid dresses.

You sound like a very lovely, considerate bride Smile

Buxbaum · 08/06/2018 12:43

Infinity dresses are really tricky on very large boobs, and the fabric feels a bit shiny and cheap.

Spam88 · 08/06/2018 12:44

I was a bridesmaid recently and we were in Maya dresses from ASOS. Lots of different styles and they come in tall and petite, plus size and maternity as well. My friend with mahoosive boobs was in a v neck with short sleeves and it looked amazing on her.

Also please tell your size 10 friend wearing a 36 band to google Boob or Bust 😬

Spam88 · 08/06/2018 12:46

Oh and I've also worn one of those multiway dresses - they're really not flattering if you've got lumps and bumps, they cling in all the wrong places. To be able to wear a bra you'll need a bandeau top underneath as well which kind of ruins the look anyway.

KirstenRaymonde · 08/06/2018 12:47

@Buxbaum yeh I think everyone will be wearing different dresses (mentioned in my OP Smile) I like that look. My church is pretty chilled though so not too worried about covering up.

OP posts:
KirstenRaymonde · 08/06/2018 12:53

@Spam88 believe me I have, she knows it’s not right but just can’t get a bra bigger anywhere reasonable, 36K is as close as she can get that’s comfortable without having to get it specially made

OP posts:
Buxbaum · 08/06/2018 12:56

Ah, but your OP said that you envisaged matching colours. I meant that you could have different colours and styles to suit each bridesmaid. Christina Hendricks’s wedding is my favourite example of this (see pic!)

Regarding cover-ups - it’s not so much about the attitudes of the church as what will make your bms feel comfortable. I would have felt deeply uncomfortable in my dress without a cover-up whether I was in church or in a nightclub. Just a thought in case your bms appreciate the option.
