Red at a wedding?

Someone once told me that you shouldn't wear red to a wedding, and it's stuck in my head. Found a gorgeous dress for friends upcoming wedding and it's red. Is it a faux pas? Tia

Never known this, only avoid white and creams. Once saw someone on here saying don’t wear green and others black but I’ve never seen people avoid these colours irl

MiddleClassProblem · 07/06/2018 10:38

As in I’ve seen these colours at weddings. There may have been guests avoiding them.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/06/2018 10:40

Google royal wedding guests and look through images. There’s a few wearing red.

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 07/06/2018 10:44

Thank you Grin red it is

*I didn't take much persuasion

Don't think it's a faux pas or have certainly not heard about it if it is. Reckon you can wear pretty much any colour bar white (and even that might be okay if not at all wedding-dressy).

NewName54321 · 07/06/2018 13:26

There is an Old Wives Tale that wearing red means you have slept with the groom.

It's up to you whether this is relevant, if this would bring attention to yourself, whether it would upset the bride and if this would bother you or anyone you care about.

MinnieMinchkin · 07/06/2018 16:39

In China red is the traditional bridal colour, so only to be avoided in the way most women in the west wouldn't wear white to a wedding that wasn't their own Grin

ImNotReallyAWaitress · 07/06/2018 16:46

First I heard of not wearing red to a wedding was when I moved to Scandinavia and it means you had slept with the groom.

No issue with it in the UK that I’ve ever heard of 🙂

CountFosco · 07/06/2018 17:26

As long as you don't plan on running away with either the bride or groom you'll be fine!

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 08/06/2018 10:18

Definitely haven't slept with the groom!

I'm now away to check my wedding album for any pals wearing red Grin

What a loaf of codswallop. Wear red if you want OP.

peoplearepeople · 08/06/2018 10:28

I've read the same recently I think. The reason given though was that in wedding photographs it can detract from the bride so is considered a bit of a faux pas.

HoppingPavlova · 08/06/2018 10:30

I wouldn’t wear it to any wedding where bride or groom has an Asian heritage or you risk wearing the same colour as the bride. If that’s not a concern then no issue with wearing red.

DextroDependant · 08/06/2018 10:34

Keepers I am going to be a nervous wreck at the next wedding I go to.

No white
No green
No black
No ref
No cream
No lace
No shoulders
No cleavage

Dontletthebastardsgrindyoudown · 11/06/2018 00:15

DuchyDuke · 11/06/2018 15:25

as long as the bride isn’t wearing red you’re fine.

I have just bought red dresses for my bridesmaids.

My grandma used to say you couldn’t wear red or white to a wedding as it was unlucky due to being the colour of blood and bandages. She was born in 1900 though so that may have had something to do with war brides and the like. She had a superstitious saying for every ocassion!

MarthaArthur · 12/06/2018 14:22

Jewish weddings tent to avoid red. Not other weddings though.

vodkaandcranberry · 12/06/2018 16:27

I love a red dress. I wore this to a wedding recently and I noticed a couple of the other guests wore red too.

LapsedHumanist · 12/06/2018 17:19

Depends. Red floral tea dress is fine, red nylon lace minidress, umm, maybe not. Bit of an exaggeration to make a point but you get the idea.

I think you just have to be a bit more careful with the style/details/fabric than with some other colours.
