Treatment for fungal toenail, pls?

ARoomSomewhere · 06/06/2018 22:15

I have fungal infections in both my little and big toe nails :(
I am nowhere near salon for treatments so it will have to be DIY.
Can anyone recommend something I can paint on?
Can I then use colour to make them less fugly while it works?

You may need oral anti fungals. Dh has been taking them for several months now and his big toenail is improving slowly. See your gp

ElfrideSwancourt · 07/06/2018 06:41

A family member is a GP and told me to use tea tree essential oil on my fungal toenails- apparently it is just as effective. I put on a few drops morning and night and scrub it into the nail with a toothbrush.

aroomwithaperfectview · 07/06/2018 07:14

I use tee tree oil on my big toenail too and I've just started sprinkling antifungal powder between my toes and in my socks, shoes and slippers. I'm also seeing a podiotrist tonight to have my toenails filed. It's been 3 years since I developed this fungal infection and I cannot get rid of it but at least it doesn't get worse and hasn't spread to my other toenails. I also stopped using nail varnish.

AnnaMagnani · 07/06/2018 07:21

Oral anti-fungals.

The teatree oil is not just as effective. 8 bloody years of applying it and filing down my toenail.

The lacquer is a waste of time too.

TheMythicalChicken · 07/06/2018 07:24

Vics Vapo Rub.

BigFatBloomers · 07/06/2018 07:28

Pills we’re the only thing that got rid of mine, having tried loads of other things. Not great for your liver though (I think it’s liver) so not to be taken without consideration

FesteringCarbuncle · 07/06/2018 07:29

I am thrilled to say that I have cured my fungal toe nail infection
I had one very bad toe nail. It was painful because it was so thick. I cured that in my first round of treatment. The other 2 just had it on the ends but they needed 2 lots of treatment
I used the stuff made my canesten. It is cheaper on Amazon. It just kind of rots the nail away. I filed rather than use the scraper you get in the pack
After that I used oregano oil. I have anti fungal nail varnish. You could just put tea tree oil in any nail varnish I guess

QueenoftheNights · 07/06/2018 07:29

The lacquer doesn't work and it annoys me that it's advertised as a cure.

I used tea tree oil and got improvement but you have to be religious with it- I used it morning and night for months, didn't use nail polish (which I normally do), cut my nail as short as possible, and I didn't get rid of it all. I'd not use the oral meds because they can have serious side effects and it seems pretty drastic treatment for a nail, unless your nail is really bad. Mine was just discoloured half way up.

StereophonicallyChallenged · 07/06/2018 07:29

I've tried everything before now, and while vics rub and tea tree help, nothing made it go completely.
Currently using nailner twice a day (holiday soon!) So far I've seen the best results of anything Smile Wish I'd taken a 'before' picture when I started now.
Definitely worth trying it OP Smile

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 07/06/2018 07:30

I was using oregano essential oil which seemed to be working - then the whole nail went bad again.
I was thinking about getting some of that stuff from the chemist that costs £30. But maybe I'd be wasting my time. Had anyone had success with it?
Maybe it's back to the GP for me.

StereophonicallyChallenged · 07/06/2018 07:31

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 07/06/2018 07:33

Cross posted with some useful advice there

ARoomSomewhere · 07/06/2018 08:29

Thanks.
I am wary of oral anti fungals as i've just lost my gall bladder which puts a strain on the liver apparantly.
And my GP wont prescribe for ANYTHING anyway, even if your limb is hanging off.
I guess i'll try the Nailner?
I'd hoped to use polish though?
Maybe polish with teatree in it would be enough? (not likely)

I am coming up to the 14 year anniversary of my fungal toenail. I have tried just about everything you can get over the counter. GP wont prescribe oral tablets. I got some stuff from GP however that you paint on and you need to file down the nail every time too. The minute I stop using it, the fungus comes back. I might try apple cider vinegar next, as a last resort. Watching this thread with interest.

hildabaker · 07/06/2018 08:35

Actually, I think mine is caused by my sugar intake. When I was on a diet and not eating sugar, there was a marked improvement in my fungus. But sugar is the only fun I get, so I refuse to give it up.

blahdeblahblag · 07/06/2018 08:51

GP told me recent oral fungal tablets are falling out of fashion because they have low success rate , about the same as over the counter stuff and are quite harsh on your liver. Plus you have to take it for 3 months!

ARoomSomewhere · 07/06/2018 09:06

my sugar is really low so its not that.
my two little toenails got damaged by poorly fitting shoes.
my big ones both got stamped on, fell off then grew back fungal.

After years of different treatments I have finally got the better of mine with household bleach.
A small amount in water and I soak my toe for a few minutes. I did this every other day for 2 weeks and saw a massive improvement.
I now use tea tree on it regularly and the occasional bleach treatment.

Magicstar1 · 07/06/2018 10:59

The Canespro stuff is brilliant. I tried everything to get rid of mine...got it from a pedicure in 2011, but nothing worked. The Canespro is a cream that's put on the nail, and a plaster to put over it. Every day you take it off and scrape the softened part of the nail away. When it's nearly gone, then put an antifungal cream on. It really works.

OpenMindedSceptic · 07/06/2018 11:26

OP, I had a severe nail infection, tried every natural remedy available (tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar, oregano oil, vaporub, etc etc)
These two products worked for me in the end:

www.amazon.co.uk/Kerasal-Treatment-appearance-discolored-psoriasis/dp/B007ADOL28/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?keywords=kerasal+nail&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1528366949&sr=8-1

www.amazon.co.uk/Lamisil-Relief-Itching-Burning-Athletes/dp/B001DQESXA/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?psc=1&s=drugstore&keywords=lamisil+cream&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1528367008&sr=1-1-spons

Apply both morning and night. It is a slow process, for me it took just over a year to clear.

ARoomSomewhere · 07/06/2018 12:02

gosh. lots of diff thimg have worked for diff people.
looks like i cant put a coloured polish over it then?

OP posts:
Spam88 · 07/06/2018 12:21

I wouldn't use a coloured polish no, and I'd bin any that you've already used the infected nails. I had antifungal tablets for mine which sorted it no problem, but if you're not able to use those I hope you do have success with a topical treatment! I used to work in a pharmacy and the advice was that if the infection is right down to the cuticle then you need tablets rather than a topical treatment, otherwise the nail will just keep growing through infected.

missmartha · 07/06/2018 12:22

My GP sent clipping away to be analised as she said it might look like fungus but wasn't necesserily.
In fact when the results came back it wasn't a fungal infection though it did look for all the world like one.

I just left it and after a year my nails look fine.

She said the stuff the use in salons and the stuff the chemist sells is rubbish and a waste of money anyway.

The best thing is to let your GP look at it.

LambChopsMcGee · 07/06/2018 12:48

I'm actually going for laser treatment for mine in a couple of weeks. I've had a problem over ten years and it really affects my confidence. I've tried various things to varying effect, so hope this works as it's bloody expensive!!

igivein · 07/06/2018 14:12

Lambchops I had laser treatment a few years ago. They removed the infected part of the nail prior to lasering. I think I had about 5 treatments, it cost about £500.
The nail did grow back clear, but the infection then came back more or less straight away.
I've just about made peace with my fungal nail infection now as I think we're going to be together for ever. Before the laser I'd tried all the OTC stuff and had two courses of tablets from the GP.
Hope you have better luck!
