Am I too old for this hair?

I have boring shoulder-length hair. I've been getting it highlighted blonde for years but it's boring. I

I need a change, maybe something quite drastic.

A hairdresser near me has posted this on her facebook page and I love the vivid pink. I can't stop looking at it.

But am I too old? I'm 34 with young children. I'm not very funky in my dress sense. I would like to change that but I'm not sure how so I'm now thinking that ridiculous new hair will either be enough to make me feel funky or will give me the boost up to get some new funky clothes.

The colour is very fun, but it'll wash out very quickly and will need a fair bit of maintenance.

I agree that the cut isn't great, something more edgy would be better, and no you're not old!

If you have blonde hair there are lots of nice colours that aren't so dark which will hold better, the pastel ones somebody mentioned look fun and fab and aren't as much work in the long run.

lurkingfromhome · 05/06/2018 09:54

It's nothing to do with being too old for it, but that type of hair colour needs to look 100% at all times or it looks really awful. Properly cut, conditioned, styled and with absolutely no roots showing and definitely no colour fade. And agree that these strong colours can really drain your complexion.

I think it's a bad idea unless you have the time and energy to keep it looking salon-fresh, but you're not too old!!!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 05/06/2018 10:00

Loads of people have brightly colored hair these days, and 34 is young anyway! I know it's a cliche, but it's only hair. It'll grow out/back if you change your mind. No one really cares what other people do to their hair, do they?!

It's not my thing really, but grannybiker's hair looks truly fabulous.

HildaZelda · 05/06/2018 10:38

Of course you're not too old, but hair like that is a LOT of maintenance as it fades very fast. I was red at one stage (real red, think Father Christmas outfit) but it faded SO fast. Went from bright red to faded then coppery and a bit ginger in the end. Fortunately my hair was short at the time so I cut/grew it out, but it will be expensive to maintain.

Whatever about the colour, the before cut is much nicer than the after cut. The after one is a bit Dora The Explorer.

MikeUniformMike · 05/06/2018 10:42

If you try a temporary colour OP, you may find it lingers because your hair is highlighted.

AKingdomForACarrotstick · 05/06/2018 10:45

hooray for you OP, unnatural hair colours are fab! i'm 35, 2 young kids and currently sporting long-ish, bottle green hair. on one side that is, the other one is a lovely, velvety buzz cut. i agree with PP though, keeping the colour involves a bit of maintenance. i'm not even talking roots, just fading. but this in itself can be fun, because it allows you to play with the colour.

anyway, do keep us posted, please!

grannybiker your hair is beautiful!

AKingdomForACarrotstick · 05/06/2018 10:46

meant to add, maintenance doesn't have to be expensive, because you can get the pots of colour to reapply at home fairly cheaply. but it does take time.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 05/06/2018 10:59

OP, you are a mere chicken, go for it, don't forget to show us ! 😄

lenalove · 05/06/2018 17:32

Honestly I'm not really feeling it, but at the end of the day it's your hair! I would maybe suggest trying a more pastel pink first and then going darker if you find yourself really enjoying it? Smile

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/06/2018 18:14

I'd advise thinking about how difficult it'd be to go back to blonde after pink and discussing that with the hairdresser.
I see so many younger women who have dyed their hair pink, blue or whatever and are going through a painful process of growing it out while it fades to a sludgy dishwater colour.

If you're quite Gung Ho about chopping it all off or dying it brown afterwards then that's not so much of an issue.
Or maybe you'll be happy to stay pink for ever Wink

A good forum for practical advice about going a crazy colour is hairdyeforum. I hope im allowed to mention that here.

They are all very experienced colour addicts and most do their hair themselves. It might be useful to have a look to see experiences of those who have crazy colours. Some dyes last longer than others, some brands have a better looking fade, hints for keeping colour topped up at home. But the attitude is very much dooooo ittttt!!!!! GrinGrinGrin

I looked on there 4 years ago before i went to the hairdresser to get my first non natural colour - lilac. Now i have a drawer full of bleach and dyes and ive been every colour i can think of. Im now 37 and def not too old. Im currently silverly pink and thinking of pale blue next. It becomes like a very addictive hobby xo

Oh and my vote is definately dooooo ittttt

MarklahMarklah · 07/06/2018 09:57

It's a lovely colour!
I have coloured hair and I'm nearly 50. Over the past 15 years or so it's been most colours. Depending on the colour you have, and how much it fades, then it can look absolutely fine as and when the roots start coming through.
You can always put some colour in the conditioner so that the colour stays more 'put' between hairdresser appointments.

DrowningEveryDay · 07/06/2018 10:27

Do it!

Ratcarguy407 · 07/06/2018 10:35

You are by no means "too old". To be blunt, don't worry so much about what others think, or how they percieve you. If you want to rock that look...go for it!

I turned 40 in February, over the past year I've grown my hair after years of shaving my head bald with a razor. I'm just over a year in to growing a beard & I've had my ears pierced again and currently stretching my earlobes. All stuff I'd toyed with in the past, but always shied away from because I convinced myself I wouldn't suit it.

My new partner of nearly 9 months is 47. She always has a coloured section in her hair, usually layered three or four at once!! Currently blue, pink and purple!!

Life is too short and all that...

notacooldad · 08/06/2018 19:06

To be honest I think you are too young for that hair colour!
It seems where I live it is older women who have that hair and say things like ' I'm eccentric you know and ' you don't have to be mad to to wirk hete ..but it helps' They are really not mad or eccentric, just annoying attention seekers.
That is my expierence anyway.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 08/06/2018 21:45

I agree it's an older rather than younger thing @notacooldad

RainySeptember · 08/06/2018 22:15

I agree with pp, you're too young for it. Round here it feels like every other woman over 50 is nipping around in a mini with pink hair. That, plus the fading, enforced lack of washing, and quick root regrowth would put me off. It also looks like a cartoon character but I forget which one.

RainySeptember · 08/06/2018 22:16

Lava Girl.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 08/06/2018 22:31

Remember the girl from Lazy Town? It's a bit similar to that. Although she did rock the pink bob I must admit.

Nurse12345 · 10/06/2018 10:04

I had it this colour years ago. It looks great but I had to top up the colour every week st home with a vegetable dye. It also stains your bath and grout!! You are definitely not too old though! Just keeps some maintaining that's all.

notacooldad · 11/06/2018 08:30

The 'unnatural' popular colour where I live for the under 40s is is grey/silver with hints of lilac./pink That looks really modern.
Currently it's the older women that tend to go for pink or purple and have it as an all over colour.

ggirl · 11/06/2018 09:28

hmmm I always think crazy coloured hair is a bit 'trying too hard' to look different and trendy and rarely suits the person

exception to grannybiker..it really does suit you !

Pinkie86 · 11/06/2018 10:38

Whenever I see people with coloured hair it always looks scrappy. Roots showing and needs a brush through

This drives me nuts too, I've had pink hair for 5 years and wouldn't be seen dead without it looking sleek and unfaded.

To me, its the pastel colours that look like weeks old fading dye.

pasturesgreen · 11/06/2018 12:41

Have you got the money, time and energy to keep it looking pristine?

Would it be acceptable in your job?

If Yes, then by all means go for it. It's not something I'll ever do in a million years (same age as you, OP), as I agree with those PP that said it's more a certain kind of older woman thing, but each to their own.

MarklahMarklah · 11/06/2018 22:28

@grannybiker I have all those colours in my hair at the moment! last year it was blue & green.
