Am I too old for this hair?

I have boring shoulder-length hair. I've been getting it highlighted blonde for years but it's boring. I

I need a change, maybe something quite drastic.

A hairdresser near me has posted this on her facebook page and I love the vivid pink. I can't stop looking at it.

But am I too old? I'm 34 with young children. I'm not very funky in my dress sense. I would like to change that but I'm not sure how so I'm now thinking that ridiculous new hair will either be enough to make me feel funky or will give me the boost up to get some new funky clothes.

Am I too old for this hair?

I wouldn't worry about age. It's the latest mid-life thing to do, like tattoos and stuff.

It may well suit you so why not?

dontquotemeondailymail · 04/06/2018 15:56

What about work? Do they have a dress code policy which mentions 'extreme' hairstyles? Extreme would be subjective and may not cover bright pink but worth checking!

SkinniesAreOver · 04/06/2018 16:00

Do it! I had a brave hair cut on Saturday and I'm enjoying it. I'm in my forties. Nobody gave me a memo telling me I had to be conservative in every single choice I make from now on.

whatwouldbe · 04/06/2018 16:05

I would not worry about age at all. whatever floats your boat and 34 is young

but since you are asking - the cut and colour look utterly ridiculous and the vibrancy will fade quickly

goose1964 · 04/06/2018 16:10

If you want it go for it but bright colours fade so quickly,

NeedADrasticChange · 04/06/2018 17:23

@dontquotemeondailymail I'm sure there is a dress code but it's not enforced so I'm not worried about that.

@whatwouldbe As I said I'm not too fussed on the cut. I like the cut but I'm quite happy with the length of my hair (shoulder length) though I might get a few choppy layers if I don't have it lobbed off. Can I ask what you mean by the colour being ridiculous? Do you think it's too bright? Too blocky?

NeedADrasticChange · 04/06/2018 17:23

I'll ask the hairdresser about fading, thanks @goose.

Colour is great.

Avoid the mum bob though!

mydogisthebest · 04/06/2018 17:31

Not keen on the style but love the colour. No way are you too old. I am early 60's and at present have my hair dyed platinum but would go for that colour if it wasn't for the fact I wash my hair every day so the colour wouldn't last

NeedADrasticChange · 04/06/2018 17:50

I see the mum bob issue!

What kind of style looks good with a bright color like this do you think? Not keen on going super-short. I did that many years ago and I looked odd.

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 17:53

Your hair is nice now. The bright pink bob is a playmobil helmet hairdo.

grannybiker · 04/06/2018 18:02

Do it! "Too old" is nonsense!
I first had mine dyed with blues and purples to celebrate the return of my hair after chemo. I was then 52
As my dress for DS' wedding was pink, we went with those tones with the blessing of him and DIL last year.
Seems to be getting much more popular and far less "Out there" than when I first had it done.

That is lovely grannybiker. I love that it was a celebration of having hair!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 04/06/2018 18:07

The draw back to pink hair like your picture is that to achieve that bright colour your hair will need to be bleached first. Really bleached.

There's a reason that you don't see people with vivid pink and that is that it fades quicker than you can blink. You need to be prepared for it to look a washed out salmon colour very quickly. Also your dark roots will need rebleaching and re dying pink every few weeks so it can be very damaging to hair.

If you do want to change the pink it's going to be very difficult to completely lift it out and go back to blonde so you may have to go dark instead.

Well that's the bad news Grin. Sorry to piss all over your chips but best to go into this with your eyes open!

rainbowgrimm · 04/06/2018 18:09

I've got pink hair, my top tip is to put a squeeze of dye (I use pinkissamo by crazy colour) in your conditioner to keep it topped up.

Fadingmemory · 04/06/2018 18:12

L’Oreal has an online “tryout” app/site. What about a) root growth, and b) fading?

Pfftlife · 04/06/2018 18:14

grannybiker love your hair, it really suits you

PickleJuice · 04/06/2018 18:16

Colour is cool, definitely don't get the same cut though.

makeupmaven · 04/06/2018 20:20

Do it, OP! You'll look lovely and if I saw you out and about, I'd think you were really stylish (coming from a 22yo, if that helps). Smile

Sparkletastic · 04/06/2018 20:24

I think it's a bit kooky old lady. What about silver grey for a more elegant look?

Mimithemouse · 04/06/2018 20:34

Funny how you ask are you too old for this, as I always think bright pink or red hair is for older women, it's not like you see many teenagers with their hair like that.

Hoppinggreen · 04/06/2018 20:38

I don’t think you are too old but it will fade badly so prepare for regular top ups if you want it that bright

NeedADrasticChange · 05/06/2018 08:34

@Sparkletastic Silver grey just sounds like a pensioner queuing in the post office. I'm too young for that yet!

Love your hair @grannybiker

I'm booked in for a consultation next week so will see what the hairdresser says.

BTW, that's not my blonde hair on the left of the picture in the OP. That's the "before" hair before of the hairdressers' client. My hair is much more boring and shit than that hair on the left Grin

I know someone with bright pink hair and it fades very very quickly. She's had to stop washing it so frequently so it also looks a bit.... unwashed. She has it re-dyed frequently too so it must cost a fortune! But when it's freshly done it does look lovely

Bluntness100 · 05/06/2018 08:49

Actually I think it's a lovely colour. The only over rider is I would say i think strong colours can make you look washed out, so you may need to rethink make up or clothes.

Good luck!

Granny biker, your hair is a great colour, they did a fab job there.
