Can I wear leopard to Ascot?

Or will I look too tacky?! Have bought a fabulous vintage style wiggle dress in leopard print and am thinking of wearing it to Ascot as it fulfils all the shape/style rules. Would wear with a black hat, bag and heels. What do you think?

No, I'm not generally opposed to it. I have some in my house.

Gah81 · 03/06/2018 13:53

Leopard is absolutely a neutral. I have a leopard dress from House of Foxy, which as it is below the knee and long-sleeved, would work for Ascot. I also have a beautiful vintage 50s leopard swing coat which is stunning.

Loonoon · 03/06/2018 14:32

I did a few years ago. A vintage Italian 2 piece with a very fitted silk shift dress in golden brown with a leopard print panel and a long line silk chiffon leopard print jacket. Brown Jasper Conrad mid height suede heels and big brown hat with golden brown feathers. It was gorgeous, total strangers asked where I had bought it. I still have it but it will probably never fit me again.

I loath Lindypop and all its identikit 40s/50s outfits that look like they’ve been run up on someone’s sewing machine. Sorry. I know it’s harsh. They look cheap to my eye, and all a bit fancy dress to me.

However, in saying that, the dress in question is fine, I would consider blush/nude as a complimentary colour for a neat little jacket and a HUGE black hat.

baublegirl454 · 03/06/2018 15:47

I've never bought from Lindybop before, but had to say I was impressed as it's fully lined and not cheap looking. Well unless u consider leopard inherently cheap 🤣

I think it's one of those marmite things, some people will love it, others not so much. If you can pull it off - thinking Dita Von teese then great, but if you know that realistically several glasses of champagne in you'll edge towards Kat Slater then I'd say no.

Roystonv · 03/06/2018 15:56

Sorry but not for Ascot (or anywhere tbh) if you want to dress appropriately however if you are the sort of person who likes to be a bit different and you have the confidence then it's up to you

MeanTangerine · 03/06/2018 16:04

I think it depends to some extent on how elegant/understated/stylish the accessories are, and how the dress fits on (prepares to get flamed).

I have not been to Ascot but I did an image-search and while I didn't see anyone else wearing leopard, you won't necessarily look out of place. Leopard per se won't look bad, it's dresses that are too tight, too low and too short that don't look elegant to me.

baublegirl454 · 03/06/2018 16:33

RoystonV - wow you really don't like it 😆
It's not inappropriate in many circumstances. Fashion magazines have been extolling it in various guises for several seasons, so that's seems rather harsh to think it inappropriate for any occasion (but each to their own)

baublegirl454 · 03/06/2018 16:34

Meantangerine - I bought it a size bigger, so not too tight. But fitted.

Leopard print at Ascot - yep. That Lindybop wiggle dress at Ascot -no.
Sorry OP. Lindybop ( speaking from experience) is cheap as all get out and looks it on.
Possibly if you had a good jacket, demure heels and small pillbox hat all in black you could tone it down to acceptable.

SpeckledyHen · 03/06/2018 17:28

Which enclosure are you in OP ?

baublegirl454 · 03/06/2018 17:50

Queen Anne enclosure. So 1 step down from Royal enclosure. Am thinking I need something different, have no budget to speak off though ☹️

I don’t object to a bit of leopard but I think that’s a bit OTT
I think you risk ending up in The Fail as a sneery example of what not to wear at Ascot. I would save it for another occasion

SpeckledyHen · 03/06/2018 18:01

In my view ( my home town is Ascot ) , then it's a definite NO for that enclosure . Ok for The Windsor , but even then it might be better not to .

ColinsVeryJolly · 03/06/2018 18:02

I love leopard print and think it can often look really classy and lovely. That dress however is a bit Bet Lynch, would look fab for a girls night out but not for Ascot.

baublegirl454 · 03/06/2018 19:19

Bugger. Back to the drawing board ☹️

Ebay is your friend if your budget is minimal. I acquired a brand new silk blouse for £10 a few weeks back - sold as "occasionwear" but tbh the cut looks good for work for me.

mimibunz · 03/06/2018 19:24

I’m generally opposed to leopard print unless I’m on a Caribbean cruise with 2,000 people I will never see again.

MrsZippyLake · 03/06/2018 19:49

I think leopard print in a floaty dress might be okay but the Lindy bop dress has the potential to look tacky.

Whitesea · 03/06/2018 22:00

Leopard is not s neutral. It just ROARS cheap and tacky. That said, I quite like it these days, I just wouldn’t wear it.

MsHomeSlice · 03/06/2018 22:05

that is too barmaid OP!!

I reckon the only way to get away with that dress would be a black fitted over dress/coat, so just a flash of leopard shows.

Gah81 · 04/06/2018 06:29

I think you need to be honest with yourself, OP: are you the kind of person who somehow makes everything they wear look chic? (This transcends age, class, wealth etc.)

Because (IMO only) accessories can only get you so far sometimes. But if you are this kind of person, then I stand by my previous comment that leopard is a neutral and goes with everything.

I just think there are some people who can pull leopard off, almost whatever the item. And on others it does look tacky, but then some people can make almost anything look tacky (not a problem usually, people should wear whatever they want to and screw everyone else. Unless they are worried about a dress code!)!
