I've started getting a weekly blow dry

Entirely thanks to Mumsnet! There was a recent thread about regular blow dries, and it inspired me to look around and see if I could manage to afford it. I found a verrrry fancy salon near my office, which offers a startlingly cheap blow dry if you get it done by their second year apprentice.

I've been going every Friday during my lunchtime and getting a GLORIOUS blow dry that I manage to make last until Tuesday with shower caps, silk pillowcases and dry shampoo. I have lovely, bouncy hair for half the week and then a ponytail for the other half. It's fantastic!

Here's today's Grin

Yes. I did this not so long ago and loved it. I looked forward to it every week and it stayed “pretty” and salon-like for a few days. Anyway my circumstances have changed and I can’t afford it now, so enjoy it for me too OP Smile

ItsalmostSummer · 01/06/2018 06:16

Ps: I think your hair looks gorgeous OP.

LavenderHills · 01/06/2018 06:21

Thanks @ItsalmostSummer! I'm sure there will be times when I can't justify it, but for now I'll keep enjoying the weekly swishiness!

I have never thought to go to a salon just for a blow dry, it looks fab! How much does it cost? I may have to treat myself.

0range99 · 01/06/2018 06:49

I so wish I could get away with that. My hair would stink to high heaven without washing.

lexiewrites · 01/06/2018 06:51

I very rarely wash my own hair i have a blow dry every Saturday morning. It only starts to look like it needs washing Thursday so I dry shampoo and wear my hair up for two days. OP your hair looks gorgeous.

MsHippo · 01/06/2018 07:27

People who do this: how do you deal with exercise? After a run my hair is properly damp with sweat. That would both ruin the blow dry and be pretty gross if I didn't wash it!

BettyPitts · 01/06/2018 07:35

I used to do this until I bought my Babyliss Big Hair, now it's easy to get it like that at home.

Although I'm on my third one as they break quite often.

LavenderHills · 01/06/2018 07:47

@SM2132 I'm in Australia, but it's the equivalent of just under £20. Not too bad, because it takes a whole hour once they've done a double wash and head massage with hydrating masque, then blow-dried my ridiculously thick hair into submission!

Thanks @lexiewrites! I wish I could get mine to last for a while week; that would be amazing.

@MsHippo Rather unfairly, I think it might just be a case of how naturally sweaty different people are. I don't sweat much when exercising, so as long as I put my hair up and wear a headband when exercising, there is minimal damage to the blow dry. I've got friends who could never get away with it, though. (On the other hand, I got breakout-prone skin from the genetic lottery, so it's swings and roundabouts!)

@LavenderHills damn, there goes my swooshy haired dreams!

Iamblossom · 01/06/2018 08:00

Same as mshippo I would absolutely love to do this and have friends that do but I swim and gym 5ish times a week and have to wash my hair every time so....

....plus whilst I think your blow dry looks absolutely gorgeous, I have yet to go to any hairdresser that can actually blow dry my hair the way I like it. I have spent £££ on a hair cut and blow dry and invariably come home and wash and blow dry it again.

So much so that I now have a mobile hairdresser come to me to cut it dry.

A source of regret for me as I love going to the hairdressers.

LavenderHills · 01/06/2018 08:00

@BettyPitts does the Babyloss work well? I've always been afraid my thick hair would break the thing!

That’s lovely, but can I be the fly in the ointment and ask to see what your hair looks like the rest of the week. Only it looks like I have similar hair texture to you and I cannot make it last that long. I just want to know if I am being unreasonable in my expectations.

Candyflip · 01/06/2018 08:21

I mean your hair is lovely, I wasn’t just saying some weird platitude. 😂

LavenderHills · 01/06/2018 08:27

Lol @Candyflip !

It definitely does NOT have that perfectly coiffed, waves-of-gloriousness look for the rest of the week. It does, however, remain silky, well-behaved and frizz-free. So I can just brush it and go out, looking like my hair behaves itself naturally.

I'll post a photo in a couple of days so you can see what I mean Smile

@Iamblossom I am extremely impressed by your exercise routine! Never mind blow dries; you must be in fantastic shape Shock

Dunno about that lavender! But thanks. And I enjoy it and have a very local leisure centre. And work from home a lot.

Candyflip · 01/06/2018 08:50

Yes, please do! Totally over-invested. Don’t even care 😂

junebirthdaygirl · 01/06/2018 08:54

I get a blow dry every Fri evening after work. Means l have great hair all weekend and into Monday. Love it so much. I don't exercise at the weekends and its the time l meet up with famiky and friends so well worth it.

Candyflip · 01/06/2018 08:57

Don’t even exercise? I wouldn’t even fucking move. I actually hate you all and your beautiful hair.

ItsalmostSummer · 01/06/2018 10:51

What I enjoyed about it was trying different ways to get a beautiful soft curly and swishy hair. It was beautiful and fun. Some weeks I preferred the blow dry more than others (and it lasted longer) but it’s really nice trying different different. (My hair dresser just had different ways of getting “the swish” and always asked me what I wanted to try).

halfwitpicker · 01/06/2018 12:43

Candyflip, you're on the money there, gorgeous hair vs exercise? No brainer.

OP you're hair looks amazing and I'm jealous that you get it to last that long. Mine would look like I'd had a fight with a chip pan after two days. Or perhaps not, if I got a professional blow-dry 🤔

halfwitpicker · 01/06/2018 12:44

It's so thick op, you're mega lucky

SenecaFalls · 01/06/2018 13:00

About three months ago, I hurt my shoulder and couldn't blow dry my hair without pain so started going to a salon for a weekly blow dry. My hair is dry and I only wash it twice a week anyway, but find that the salon blow dry usually lasts 5 days for me. My shoulder is better now, but I really want to keep going to the salon.

As to the cost, I found a place (not my regular hairdresser) that does it very affordably. I'm in the US; I pay $20.00.

Another option is a beauty school or trade school that has a cosmetology program. I found one near my work that charges $10.
