American wedding - fascinator yes or no?

myotherbagisgucci · 29/05/2018 12:29

I'm attending a wedding upstate in July. I've found the perfect dress, but I don't know if I should wear a fascinator or not.

We're the only brits going, and this is my first America wedding, so I'm not sure if fascinators are worn at weddings over there. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Any thoughts

Just checked the invite and dress code is Semi Formal! 😳

Semi Formal for Lake George in August may be a bit looser than you think. It's a summer holiday spot and could be quite hot. Have a word with the bride if you're not sure the dress you found is appropriate.

SenecaFalls · 29/05/2018 19:48

What is your dress like, myother? Semi-formal usually means cocktail type attire or long dresses for women and coat and tie, but not tuxedo, for men.

EdWinchester · 29/05/2018 19:49

No fascinator.

They are terrible things.

myotherbagisgucci · 29/05/2018 19:50

This is the dress I've bought, it looks so nice on, there is no way I'm returning it! Lol!

Also consider the venue. That will be some indication of how dressed up people will be.

SenecaFalls · 29/05/2018 19:52

That dress is really pretty. I think it will be fine. Probably right in the middle of how dressed up people will be, which is perfect.

MissConductUS · 29/05/2018 19:55

The dress is lovely and will be just fine for the wedding.

myotherbagisgucci · 29/05/2018 19:59

Thanks, it's lovely and light, and best of all it covers all my lumps and bumps! 😂

Dress is perfect for semi formal.

No to the fascinator.

expatinscotland · 29/05/2018 20:01

What Seneca said. I'd wear that dress to an outdoor wedding in the afternoon.

My sister got married at a Catholic cathedral at 5pm in September in Houston. It was evening by the time the Mass finished. The reception was immediately after at a golf club - cocktails and canapes, then a big meal and then a band/dance (there was tons of food, winks at Seneca). People were pretty dressed up. Our bridesmaid dresses were blue silk satin and more of a gown than a dress.

expatinscotland · 29/05/2018 20:03

Oh, and NO fascinator.

I have been to some African-American and African weddings, however, where wearing headgear/hats was definitely a big part of the outfits.

expatinscotland · 29/05/2018 20:04

'Best US wedding outfit I’ve seen was in Seattle though: ted baker frock with knee-high combats, total manic pixie dream girl look & pulled off very well.'

I've been to several outdoor BBQ/potluck ones where jeans, tshirts, cargo trousers and loose tops were the standard attire.

SenecaFalls · 29/05/2018 20:27

As expat said, women in African-American churches do often wear hats. But these tend to be full-on Queen-at-the-royal-wedding-type hats, not fascinators.

As a funny side note on the subject of fascinators, a considerable amount of the TV commentary in the US on the Harry Meghan wedding involved speculation about what type of headgear Princess Beatrice was going to wear. Memories of that number she wore to Will and Kate's wedding live on.Smile

The only other thing that I would suggest, OP, would be to have some sort of wrap at the ready. Sometimes it can be downright chilly in that area, even in August.

myotherbagisgucci · 29/05/2018 20:34

Thanks @SenecaFalls that's a good idea. Although my DD will only be 6 months old whilst we're out there, so I'll probably be back at the hotel by 9pm tucked up in bed! Lol

TSSDNCOP · 29/05/2018 20:37

Definitely check - we went to a US/Brit wedding in Connecticut.

The Brit side looked like the cast of 4 Weddings.

The US side looked like they were going to the Oscars.

TSSDNCOP · 29/05/2018 20:39

Sorry, I type slow.

Your dress fits the brief perfectly. Evening dressy fabric.

Have a great time.

expatinscotland · 29/05/2018 20:53

Oh, yy, a wrap or a dressy cardi in case it gets chilly.

Oh, try being on a cruise with lots of Latin Americans on formal night! Bling, bling, bling! My dad and BIL wore their tuxes, we wore our gowns and spent most of the afternoon on hair, makeup and nails. It was great fun!

expatinscotland · 29/05/2018 20:55

'a considerable amount of the TV commentary in the US on the Harry Meghan wedding involved speculation about what type of headgear Princess Beatrice was going to wear. Memories of that number she wore to Will and Kate's wedding live on.smile'

I didn't watch that one, but hands down the best comment from a tv presenter at the William and Kate wedding was as the camera panned over the Earl Spencer. One said to the other, 'Oh, and is that his new wife?' The other replied, 'All his wives are new.'

koalab · 29/05/2018 21:14

OP where is that dress from if you don't mind me asking? I have a wedding in a few weeks and a post baby body to hide (even though said baby is pretty much a toddler by now).

myotherbagisgucci · 29/05/2018 21:23

It's from AX Paris. Smile

expatinscotland · 29/05/2018 21:24

Looks perfect for the wedding, my. Hope you have a lovely time and get to see some of the state whilst there. It's beautiful.

Movablefeast · 29/05/2018 21:34

I also live in the US and years ago went to a co-workers wedding. It was quite mortifying as I had a grey satin dress cocktail dress on and people asked me if I was part of the Bride's party (ie in the wedding). I had a soft cream cardigan with feathers around the collar which I quickly hid. Many guests had jeans and t-shirts on! Very easy to feel over dressed over here. Definitely NO HEADGEAR!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/05/2018 21:40

Just out of interest to the Americans on the thread, what would you wear to a formal American wedding? Sort of church service , country club reception etc?

pallisers · 29/05/2018 21:59

depends on what kind of wedding it was. My BIL got married outdoors with a couple of readings and a fab dinner after (with croquet for the kids). I wore a slightly fancy cotton summer dress. Ditto for friend who got married on the beach with party after. My friend had a brilliant wedding in NYC they were both very well off, first marriage and nearly 40 and threw a hell of a bash. We all wore black tie/evening clothes.

The average catholic wedding I see in my local church is usually nice suit/dress but no hat.
