Super hydrating moisturiser

I have combination skin, prone to eczema in the dry areas and really sensitive. I'm also very pale. Yes, I really lucked out in the skin genetic department. Hmm

I've recently hit 40, and I'm finding the moisturisers I used to use aren't really going into my skin any more. They just seem to sit on the top, leaving the sore, dry areas untouched. My skin looks like it is very dry, too - I have my fair share of age-related lines, but also lots of small, fine lines that aren't age so much as a scream for moisture.

Things I've used in the past that no longer work:

  • Nivea blue
  • Nivea soft touch
  • Skin Drink from Lush
  • Lacura range from Aldi (too harsh these days)

Please can someone help!

I didn't get any more dryness after changing to body shop vitamin c range. Dermatologist told me to wash my face with detmol 500 which will probably be helping my skin. Sometimes I put coconut oil on at night.

For dehydrated (as opposed to dry) skin, Eucerin Aquaporin rich is the most hydrating I've found, over Vichy Aqualia serum .

Dwellerfromunderthesink · 14/05/2018 15:58

I moved from la Roche Posay to Avene Hyrdrance Intense Rehydrating Serum followed by Avene (Rich) Hydrating Cream. For the first time in as long as I can remember my skin feels properly moisturised and the flaky patches on the side of my nose have gone. Also the milia I was getting around my eyes and forehead have all but gone. I’m on my second lot of these products and love them. I’ve just got their eye cream which feels good too but I’ve only been using it a few weeks so can’t recommend it yet. I’ve got very sensitive, fragile, combination skin and I’m 57. I got the recommendation for Avene on here and I’m so glad I got it 😀

coconut oil

HostaToFortune · 14/05/2018 16:01

Bliss Drench N Quench

UglyFatPig · 14/05/2018 16:25

Estee Lauder Verite, expensive but lovely

QuantumGirl · 14/05/2018 16:38

Another vote for Eucerin. It's so good, feels like glue.

pigmcpigface · 14/05/2018 17:03

Thanks all, I'll try some of these out!

I've tried coconut oil - it makes me break out! Blush I don't know why that would be, I thought it was supposed to be anti-bacterial!

Can someone explain the difference between dehydrated and dry skin? I do not understand this. I drink loads of water!

The coconut oil made you break out because it's highly comedogenic which means it blocks your pores.

LeeMiller · 14/05/2018 17:08

Dehydrated means the skin is lacking water, dry a skin-type is lacking oil. So you can be both, or one or the other. Things like hard water and central heating can dehydrate your skin even if you drink lots of water, unfortunately! There's a summary of the difference and the different symptoms here: www.laroche-posay.co.uk/the-difference-between-dry-dehydrated-skin

MyUsername200 · 14/05/2018 17:08

I don't really have any suggestions for a moisturiser (I tend to use Nivea soft but I see you've tried that) however I suffer with dry skin at times and have been using no 7 gentle melting cleanser and Lush Ultrabland cleanser alternately. They both leave my skin feeling soft with no dry patches which is great. My skin looks a lot brighter too. Something to think about. Smile

mommybear1 · 14/05/2018 17:10

Astral - it's ridiculously moisturising

pigmcpigface · 14/05/2018 17:13

garybarlows - does that mean it shouldn't be used on your face? Shock

leemiller - thank you! That's such a clear explanation. Iv'e been trying to understand this for so long, and you've finally got through to m! Having read that link, I would say my skin is dehydrated rather than dry. I don't have flaky bits. I am nervous about any product that says it contains 'acid' as I've had loads of problems with these in the past being too harsh for my skin (this was the issue with the Lacura range).

I am currently using aveeno which seems fine. I have very dry sensitive skin. Coconut oil doesn’t work for me either though I do like it

Dwellerfromunderthesink · 14/05/2018 17:17

I tried coconut oil and ended up with lots of milia around my eyes/forehead and my skin still didn’t feel moisturised enough. I’ve found that with many oils such as Argan, Rosehip ans Clarins facial oils. My skin still felt dehydrated if I used them alone. Occasionally I put some oil on top of moisturiser but only because I’m trying to use it up.

Acopyofacopy · 14/05/2018 17:17

This cream by Eucerin is not available in the UK, but you can order it via amazon.
It is great for my very dry skin with eczema and much nicer than Cetraben cream, which you could also try.
My skin was horrendous with eczema on my cheeks, but I got it under control with a little bit of Protopic and lots of Eucerin.

PettsWoodParadise · 14/05/2018 19:05

I suffer from Rosacea so very sensitive skin and a dry one at that. I find the Simple range works best. I’ve tried really expensive creams, but this is the best. I use the hydrating moisturiser on most days, then one evening a week I use the deep cleansing face mask and it leaves my skin feeling gorgeous. I still get breakouts at certain hormonal times of the month but the Simple range may be with a try and it isn’t expensive either.

Bodicea · 14/05/2018 19:13

Another vote for eucerin. The 5% urea cream is amazing. I use at night. In the day I like aquaporin

Anotherdayanothernight · 14/05/2018 19:19

I'm mid forties and have been using Green People Vitamin fix as a day cream, it works for me, I've got greasy and sensitive skin and the cream is organic so doesn't irritate.

Unsure123123 · 14/05/2018 19:29

I'm exactly the same as you and I've had to go to diprobase cream and ointment. I use the ordinary buffer for lines and hydraloric acid serum under. I only use oil and water to cleanse. At the moment its all that works.

Charliejr16 · 14/05/2018 19:30

Sounds like we have similar skin OP! Lancôme precious cells night cream is incredibly moisturising, it's the only cream that's ever worked for me. I use a little in the morning and slather it on at night! Expensive, but totally worth it. Hope you find something that works Thanks

TikiMara · 14/05/2018 20:03

I have extremely dry skin. It flakes and my legs go white with dryness (I'm mixed race and quite dark skinned). The only thing I've ever found that does the job is the hemp range by body shop. This and coconut oil (however best stay away if it makes you break out).

Rachyabbadabbadoo · 14/05/2018 20:06

Another one for Eucerin... I use their night cream for both day and night (I’m that rock and roll!). Some creams irritate around my eyes and then I get into that cycle of eyes watering and skin getting sorer. Eucerin night cream never does that. Boots usually have special offers on it.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 14/05/2018 20:10

Decleor Hydra Floral. It's the only super moisturise cream that doesn't make me break out.

pigmcpigface · 15/05/2018 08:11

Thank you all so much! I appreciate these suggestions, and will try to work my way through some of them! I think I may start with Diprobase, as I have a persistent patch of eczema on my jawline which I really need to get rid of and even steroid cream isn't shifting it. Eucerin gets tons of votes here too, so they are clearly doing something right!!

It's really comforting to know I'm not the only one. And a huge YES to Body Shop hemp handcream. I love that stuff!
