If you spend a lot/ are high maintenance....

How much do you spend?
I’m using an excel spread sheet to track spending during the year. I have separated out clothes in one column and beauty in another. I would classify myself as high maintenance. Regular nails, hair cut and colour and clothes. I am interested to know what others spend (if you don’t mind disclosing) monthly or annually, if you consider yourself a high spender in that area. Just interested in trying to gauge where I am on the spending scale!

Cut and root touch up every 6 weeks £35
Nails every now and again probably £120 a year
Gym/pool membership £25 a month
I don’t wear make up, and have no skin care routine
Probably spend £50 a year on hair products
Perfume is my weakness - estimate £400 a year
I spend a fair bit on clothes and shoes too, hard to say as I then sell on eBay to buy more! Maybe £2000 a year, probably get over half back
£5 a week at slimming world

Millybingbong · 13/05/2018 09:08

I spent 250 on clothes yesterday for the summer and feel very guilty about it so this is helpful!

Other Than that i also spend about £10 On make up and 25 on hair cuts monthly

Hoolahoophop · 13/05/2018 09:26

Interesting discussion. I'm probably higher than i think.

Cut and blow dry every 8 weeks £80
Home gel nails £15 month
Makeup rarely use but sometimes buy low end £5 month
Face and had creams £10 month
Clothes no more than £200 month including splurges.
So maybe £3.5k a year. I think I could spend more wisely up it a little but enjoy it more. Now I'm close to 40 and with 2dc I feel like spending a bit more on luxury fit myself.

negunslean · 13/05/2018 09:33

Ah I’m glad this thread is going the way I hoped, no judgement needed!
Here’s what I spend
Clothes £350 per month
Nails £27 every 2 weeks
Gym £40 per month
Botox £150 every 6 months
Hair £65 every 5 weeks
Beauty products £100 month
Bags / shoes probably £200 month

Just increasing spends on non surgical face tweaks as I’m getting older and things are sagging. So having some threads put in soon at £900 and non surgical nose job at £500.
Spent £12500 on tummy tuck last year which has changed my life immensely.

I’m not massively high maintenance, probably middle of the road -

Clothes - £200-£400 a month
Nails - £25 every 2-3 weeks
Health club membership - £50
Hair - £50-£100 depending on colour or just trimming, have balayage so doesn’t need re-touching as often as trimming
Beauty stuff - £50 a month
I do splurge on high end handbags every year which bumps my yearly spend up.

reallyanotherone · 13/05/2018 10:37

Holy shit!

No judgement- if you have the money and that’s what you want to spend it on fair enough.

But bloody hell. Some of you are spending close to my entire household income!

Out of interest how many of you are single? Married? Kids? Do you work full time? Apart from the money side i couldn’t fit in all those trips to the shops and salon around work, housework, kids, dog etc..

fascinated · 13/05/2018 10:40

This is interesting. Confirms what I suspected when I reasoned that the cost of the occasional in-home daytime childcare that I wanted to give me a break was probably less than or the same as many others spend on beauty. No judgment from me, just interesting because I’ve been judged by others for taking this childcare.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/05/2018 10:44

I'm not judging either, but am staggered at some of the costs on this thread. It takes me several months to get through a foundation and blusher. I wear lipstick most days, but all my lipsticks still last for several months. Do you buy extremely expensive and high end skincare products and make up or just use lots of it several times a day?

I get through moisturiser, body lotion and night cream pretty quickly because they get used every day. I have dry hair so only wash it twice a week, so I don't get through shampoo/conditioner that quickly either.

MynameisJune · 13/05/2018 10:51

@really I have one DC and I’m married. I work full time and DC is in Nursery 4 days a week.

MrsMarigold · 13/05/2018 11:04

Really interesting, I used to be quite high maintenance, but am currently experiencing extreme austerity and have had to cut back.

I never buy clothes now but could do with a few bits and pieces but will just do without. Buy underwear on ebay (new only but much cheaper for Freya bras).

No gym, just walking everywhere. Have thought of joing a cheap gym to do weights. Under the austere regime I've got quite a bit fatter as I've been depressed and have spent literally hours bawling my eyes out.

I get my eyebrows and eyelashes tinted about three times a year and keep it up myself between visits that's £20 each time.

I stopped getting my hair done but felt hideous so started going to vidal sasson academy, so I get an excellent cut and colour is £35. They love my hair there as it's dead straight, quite fine but I have loads and it's made for precision cuts. I also use any old shampoo and it's very silky.

I ask for make-up for my birthday. Laura Mercier foundation and concealer. Then buy No.7 eyeliner and mascara and bourjois blusher. Spend £20 every three months on moisturiser - la roche posay. Ponds cold cream for make-up removal.

I maintain my feet well with a scrubbing brush and pumice daily and just paint my toenails. I never do anything to my fingernails apart from keeping them all the same length and clean.

Its been hell to be honest and I'd love to have a bit to spend on myself but it's life.

BlueTrousers · 13/05/2018 11:12

Just place marking
Finding this all fascinating tbh

cafune7 · 13/05/2018 11:12

Not in the UK but I'll try to express the prices in £

Blowdries(2x/week) around £110/month
Manicure once at 2 weeks- £25
Pedicure 1x/month £30
Colour and cut once at 8 weeks, around £90-£100
Facials once at 2-3 months £100
Clothes, shoes, bags- £200 month TOPS
Make-up/perfumes once at every few months but I would say average £50/ month

I know I am high maintenance but these things make me happy, save me time and I can afford them, so why the hell not?

augustusglupe · 13/05/2018 11:14

I’ve cut back a lot this year on clothes, shoes and bags. I have spent a ridiculous amount on Louboutins and LV bags in the last 10 years.

Botox and my hairdresser are luxuries that I’m not giving up though.
I spend £300 ish on Botox every 3 months and between £130.00 and £250.00 on my hair every 7 weeks depending on what I have done.

I do my own manicures...mainly because I hate sitting there making small talk for an hour!!

cafune7 · 13/05/2018 11:24

Ehw I knew I forgot stuff

-Skincare about £100-150 every 6 months
-Eyebrows about £40 once at 2 months

RainySeptember · 13/05/2018 11:57

Oh I love this thread, how interesting. I get lots of compliments on my appearance and think I look pretty well groomed, but don't spend much.

Do my own gel nails, waxing etc because I can't stand the smalltalk experience (wish I could do my own hair tbh for that same reason). Sadly, spend £100pm on hair.

Products and make up probably works out about £50pm, it's hard to say because things last a long time even though I'm fully made up every day.

Clothes budget is £200pm.

I always ask for perfume for Christmas.

I run and swim and cycle, so no gym membership.

I only go to spas when forced to do so for hen parties because I really don't 'get' them. I can get better beauty treatments locally and relax better in my own home!

Fully intend to have Botox and fillers in the future but no need yet.

So I think that's quite low maintenance. No judgement on those of you spending lots, do what makes you happy with your own money!

DuchyDuke · 13/05/2018 12:01

Beauty treatments - 10/3 weeks
Hair - £50 / 8-12 weeks
Make up - as and when I need to. Probably £100/year.
Lunches - I like to buy so £30 / week.
Holidays - biggest expense as I need them. Probably 2-3k per year.
Clothes - as and when, probably £400 - £500 / year, but I get top quality and so will wear them for years.

I still save around 50 percent of my income, pay the bills etc.

wizzywig · 13/05/2018 12:03

Thank godm I thought I was the only high maintenance one! I'm in my 40s: £40 every 3 weeks on gel Mani and pedicure (nails only no foot soaks, scrub), £80 every 6 weeks on hair cut n dye. £35 every 8 weeks on lvl. £30 a month on gym membership. Clothes as and when but generally if theres a sale on. Oh that's not too bad.

ilovepixie · 13/05/2018 12:07

Not much! A bar of soap £1, shampoo £2, clothes from George at Asda when I need something! Hair dye £4 every few months. Rarely wear make up so nothing there really!

Didiusfalco · 13/05/2018 12:10

Oh this is interesting. It’s actually making me feel better as I’m realising that when I see women looking very put together and groomed they’re not just falling out of bed like that, it’s taking time and money.

Cecily75 · 13/05/2018 12:12

I consider myself low maintenence and yet still spend £200 a month on clothes/cosmetics Blush. And additional sums on massages and hairdresser's (extra £200 this month for colour and cut).

Love this thread, some of you make me feel like I'm restrained..! Wink

Etymology23 · 13/05/2018 12:17

This is super interesting and I definitely don’t look put together but equally I probably spend £25 per year on shampoo, conditioner and razors, £25 on make and hair products, £60 per year on haircuts plus whatever I spend on clothes and shoes which I guess must be about £400 per year? That sounds like a lot, given I buy most clothes second hand but a pair of new boots plus a pair of summer shoes could be £150 fairly easily, and I find high heels often wear out fast if you wear them day in day out.

So about £45 pcm all in.

Makes me think I can feel less guilty about spending a little bit more now!

stressedmumm · 13/05/2018 12:20

Wow i only spend around £20/30 per month now

Used to be £300 a month- hair lashes fake tan nails make up
And £200- clothes per month

But since having my DD I hate spending on myself

Mooey89 · 13/05/2018 12:22

Too much for my budget and I’ve been trying to cut back because we’re paying for a wedding...

Hair every 3 months - alternate half/full head of highlights so either £70 or £90 every 3 months.

Nails every 2 weeks - £25
HD brows every 6 weeks - £15
Wax every 6 weeks ish - £18

Currently a facial every 6 weeks Blush - £45

I used to have lashes every 3 weeks too but that’s now special occasions only.

I also buy skincare etc every few weeks when it runs out but tends to be the ordinary or TKMaxx but probably works out to £15 per month...

Oh god that’s disgusting written down!!!

LoniceraJaponica · 13/05/2018 12:28

This makes me feel very ungroomed, yet I think I look "put together", except for manicures. I find that I tend to chip nail varnish very easily, so I don't wear any.

lynmilne65 · 13/05/2018 12:29

am virtually non maintenance!
