Help settle an argument - inappropriate cami

So today I wore something like this to work (investment firm)
(silk cami with lace trimming under a blazer. I have average boobs of 32-34DD, so a bit of cleavage shows)
cdn-img.instyle.com/sites/default/files/styles/684xflex/public/1472244241/082616-silk-cami-lead.jpg?itok=ERAROM5H

Two women commented that the cami is inappropriate for work environment, is suggestive and a satin cami like that "belongs in the bedroom". Unsolicited comment aside, I am just wondering, is this really that inappropriate? I was a little shocked.

Mind you there are PAs in our firm that dress in short and tight dresses with platform heels, but I don't want to be lumped in with them...

Not appropriate.

Kochicoo · 11/05/2018 17:03

Yeah, not appropriate. Lovely for a night out though. Regardless of fabric, I don't think any cleavage showing ever looks appropriate in a professional environment and that coupled with a strapless satin cami - not at all. I'm sure you looked lovely though!

SmallestInTheClass · 11/05/2018 19:01

Not for work, but good for a night out.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/05/2018 19:03

Love the example of a TV star flogging a book to demonstrate why wearing it in an investment firm is acceptable Grin

TheCatsWhiskers · 11/05/2018 20:20

Inappropriate, can't believe you would think otherwise.

By the way, your comments about PA staff was horrible.

You say they are sleeping with the managers, which means the managers are also sleeping with them. I wonder who you judge the most?

BIWI · 11/05/2018 20:29

You're acknowledging that cleavage is showing. Why are you doing that? If your'e working in investment banking you will, as a woman, have to work very hard to establish that you're a serious contender. And this means dressing appropriately.

I'm all for women wearing what they want, and not victim blaming, but in your situation you need to be think strategically about how you portray and position yourself.

Dress for success not sex!

Oldraver · 11/05/2018 20:30

Their comments about your dress were inappropriate.

SomeKnobend · 11/05/2018 20:38

I wouldn't wear it to work but I certainly wouldn't comment if someone else was wearing it. Completely unprofessional and inappropriate, why do they think other people's clothes are their business? Did they actually bring it up with you or did you just overhear them talking to each other?

Mercurial123 · 11/05/2018 20:38

Their comments weren't inappropriate where I work you would be told not to wear it again. If you don't like working somewhere with such clothing restrictions you don't have to.

OutsideContextProblem · 11/05/2018 20:44

I’d happily wear it to work, but owing to body shape I wouldn’t be showing any cleavage whatsoever, and I’d keep my jacket/posh cardigan on because visible shoulders are strictly verboten at my work, along with toes.

LIZS · 11/05/2018 20:44

Not for a professional or corporate working environment. Evening out or wedding maybe.

SavageBeauty73 · 11/05/2018 20:48

Inappropriate for work.

And your comments about PA's are inappropriate 🙄

QuinnElle · 11/05/2018 20:49

Not appropriate at all.

This. And yes, inappropriate for your industry.

teddycat · 11/05/2018 21:05

I think wear it if you want but unfortunately your professionalism will be judged (as I said unfortunately but that's people's perceptions and in that type of environment career progression is often influenced by perception )
