Help settle an argument - inappropriate cami

So today I wore something like this to work (investment firm)
(silk cami with lace trimming under a blazer. I have average boobs of 32-34DD, so a bit of cleavage shows)
cdn-img.instyle.com/sites/default/files/styles/684xflex/public/1472244241/082616-silk-cami-lead.jpg?itok=ERAROM5H

Two women commented that the cami is inappropriate for work environment, is suggestive and a satin cami like that "belongs in the bedroom". Unsolicited comment aside, I am just wondering, is this really that inappropriate? I was a little shocked.

Mind you there are PAs in our firm that dress in short and tight dresses with platform heels, but I don't want to be lumped in with them...

I wouldn't wear it for work. Suppose it's not too bad if you kept your jacket buttoned up and the rest of your outfit was fairly plain and not, umm, like you were going clubbing.

drumandthebass · 11/05/2018 16:02

I think the top itself is okay, but maybe it was the amount of cleavage that offended people? In the picture she isn't showing any cleavage as such

LemonysSnicket · 11/05/2018 16:03

It looks like a negligee .... I would wear it on a night out or even casually, but not to work. It is purposefully sexy.

Mercurial123 · 11/05/2018 16:03

No way you could have worn that in my office. Maybe the PAs liked it you seem to have a similar style?!

Brittanyspears · 11/05/2018 16:08

Oh no not the ghastly cheap PAs!!! Hmm

Caramelapplecake · 11/05/2018 16:11

I wouldn't have worn a lace trimmed satin camisole to work when I was a PA (unless as underwear underneath my blouse) as I liked to look professional.

DamnWhyAreAllTheUsernamesTaken · 11/05/2018 16:11

Oooh I love it. Bet you looked great and they were jealous 🤷‍♀️

BodgingThisMumThing · 11/05/2018 16:14

Very on trend and not inappropriate!

ScreenQueen · 11/05/2018 16:18

Inappropriate. Sorry.

Mercurial123 · 11/05/2018 16:19

Why would they be jealous if it's not appropriate for the OP's workplace, I work in a conservative office and that wouldn't be acceptable. The only thing that is off is the comment about the PA's does that mean the OP is jealous of them?!

Wondermoomin · 11/05/2018 16:20

Inappropriate for that sort of workplace, but the women were rude to point that out to you (unless they're your management and have the responsibility to have that sort of discussion with you).

halfwitpicker · 11/05/2018 16:20

God help the poor PA's at your place.

Bloody plebs with their platforms on. Have they no sense of style at all, the idiots?

TitZillas · 11/05/2018 16:20

I work in a primary school so it wouldn’t be appropriate for my office

Atalune · 11/05/2018 16:20

In a different fabric I think it would have been ok, but the silk/lace combo does give it a more evening look.

Not ok for corporate I think.

RadioDorothy · 11/05/2018 16:22

Actually I like that top...not really inappropriate per se.

Large breasts might render it less than ideal in terms of coverage, shall we say! But I work in financial services and I've seen way worse in the city, I wouldn't worry about it.

bobstersmum · 11/05/2018 16:22

We need a pic of you as you were in it really, to comment.

Ohyesiam · 11/05/2018 16:24

I suppose it does look a bit underwearish. And in that way people could construe it as unprofessional.
It would be nice if women could wear what they want without it being anyone else’s issue though.

Bugjune · 11/05/2018 16:24

Nice look but totally inappropriate in a corporate environment, regardless of tit size.

Awrite · 11/05/2018 16:24

I think what's inappropriate is that 2 women felt it appropriate to comment on what you were wearing. Ditto your shitty comment about the PAs.

Onceuponatimethen · 11/05/2018 16:24

I would think you were unprofessional if you wore that op - sorry!

I think it would be an issue in these conservative heavily male dominated environments where there is a fair bit of inappropriately sexist thinking and acting going on anyway

Fine for designer retail, fashion, model agency, hairdresser, but not for the city

Onceuponatimethen · 11/05/2018 16:26

I would also think a surfer style top was inappropriate on men and that they would end up being viewed as unprofessional

Bugjune · 11/05/2018 16:26

Men couldn't get away with a silky cami either. Wink

AnaViaSalamanca · 11/05/2018 16:27

No they weren't management, just distant colleagues, but they are older so maybe more conservative, and yes there is a fair amount of gossip in general.

And my apologies for the disrespect about the PAs, it was not about the job at all, but there are many who dress in an overtly sexy way and even sleep with the bosses. What I meant was that I don't want to be looked at as someone who is trying to use sexiness as a way of advancing in her career or if I am wearing it "for someone" at work.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 11/05/2018 16:28

I have to be honest I wouldn’t comment on it if a colleague wore it though, I’d keep my thoughts to myself.

hampsteadholly · 11/05/2018 16:40

Wouldn't be acceptable in my office. (central government)
