Help... I hate my haircut

I've just come back from getting my haircut and really don't like it.

I paid £35 for a stylist but I'm not happy with the result. I went in without a clear picture of what I wanted because I wanted to talk it through with the stylist and get their opinion/advice too. But she didn't really offer any help or ask me any questions, she just brought over an ipad and asked me to look through some images and pick out what I liked.

She did the cut really quickly and I have these layers that I think are blocky. When she finished cutting she asked if I was happy with the length- I hadn't realised she had finished and thought she was going to shape/ do something else so said yes- but then she proceeded to dry and curl my hair. The cut looks okay with a wave/curl but now the curl is dropping I don't think it will look good with my natural/straight hair.

I'm not sure what to do. I've never complained or gone back to a hairdressers before- I'm worried it will be incredibly awkward. I'm also worried that they will say that it's my fault as I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted and when she asked if I was happy with the length I said yes. I don't really want to see the same stylist again anyway- as I said I felt like she did it really quickly and didn't think about how to help me, or work with me particularly.

I guess I'm just really disappointed because I don't have much spare money to spend on getting my hair done and was really looking forward to it. I have the day off work so wanted to treat myself, as I don't really have time to do this sort of thing and I just feel sad and deflated.

A pic of what you asked for and what you got would be helpful

heathers00 · 11/05/2018 13:12

Give them a call. I am sure they will help you. If they dont know there is a problem, they can't fix it.

MissReginaPhilange · 11/05/2018 13:13

Fun fact.. .. I got told once that when hairdressers curl your hair after a cut its so you can't actually see the cut properly....less likely to complain

mr405 · 11/05/2018 13:38

Here are two of the images I showed and here is me.

It doesn't look awful with the wave/curl, but I think when natural (straight) it won't have any of the movement or shape I was hoping for. I also don't really want a cut that I have to spend a huge amount of time styling everyday!

But I think a some of it is down to feeling like the cut was rushed and that it wasn't that great an experience. I didn't feel like the stylist really cared how the cut would look or work for me or spent any time really making it great. And this is someone who has been doing hair for 5= years, not a recent trainee!

Not that you asked for this but I use it to get movement in my hair. Beach salt spray is amazing when uour hairs like this. Spray on dry hair scrunch a bit and away you go. Mine is a similar length but a blunt cut and I get movement in it with this. Just blowdry spray and away you go. I actually think it looks nice for the record

cloudtree · 11/05/2018 13:43

I think your hair looks pretty similar to the pictures you've posted

cloudtree · 11/05/2018 13:44

Plus you can't really complaint that the haircut you chose (which is dependent on a wave) will not look right on your hair when its straight.

ellaV · 11/05/2018 13:44

I think it looks similar to the pics too!

mr405 · 11/05/2018 13:46

Thanks MissreginaPhilange I agree it isn't bad with the wave in it but I think it won't work so well straight. I'm worried it will just hang

Is there a particular sea salt spray you use? And do you use it on dry or damp hair?

I think that's another thing- the stylist didn't make any kind of suggestion about styling my hair or products I could use, which normally they do? Or maybe that's just my experience elsewhere

cloudtree I also showed a couple of photos of straight cuts and said I usually wear my hair straight, so would expect a cut that works for both? It's not very clear in the photo I posted but there are various layers that I think will be heavy and blocky when straight.

Soundsgood · 11/05/2018 13:49

I would wash it today and blow dry it.

cloudtree · 11/05/2018 13:52

It's difficult to say without seeing it straight but you have asked for a particular cut and she's given you that cut. Whether its then easy to style or looks good when styled differently isn't really the hairdresser's fault. You might be the sort of person who styles/curls their hair every morning.

Apileofballyhoo · 11/05/2018 13:52

I don't think I'd be happy either and I also think a good stylist should advise on what would actually work for your type of hair, not cut it into something that looks like a picture in a magazine but then needs a lot of maintenance to keep it that way. But in my admittedly limited experience it's a rare hairdresser who can actually cut hair in a style that suits both your hair and face.

mr405 · 11/05/2018 13:52

I'll post a photo when it is straight- a lot of my concern is from when I saw it straight after she cut and dried my hair before styling. It was kind of just hanging with blocky layers and no movement/ style.

I suppose my real worry is that the waves are covering up a bad cut that isn't what I asked for?? I agree that in the photo I took it looks alright!

I use it on dry hair and give it a good scrunch with a dry towel you can pick up any brand pretty sure I got mine from the pound shop Blush
I don't ever wear mine dead straight as its quite fine and seems limp if I don't add any product... also dry shampoo is amazing for getting a bit of movement and body in your hair Grin

mr405 · 11/05/2018 13:58

cloudtree I would say that a good hair stylist would ask those things and try and make the cut work- surely that is the point of a consultation?

I also didn't bring photos in to begin with as I didn't just want to show a photo and expect my hair to look exactly like that- I described what I was after and explained what I didn't like about my current cut. She insisted that I picked out several photos on the iPad- which I understand obviously makes it easier to visualise but I didn't want those exact cuts- it's the shape and the movement they have that I like.

I did tell her that I tended to leave my hair natural but liked how it looks with a wave- not that I spend a long time every morning styling or that I always wear my hair this way.

My pleasure :)

cloudtree · 11/05/2018 15:36

What did you ask for though OP?

You said you picked out those photos and it looks like she's given you a similar cut. The GoT actress - difficult to tell what that's like because she has hers tucked behind her ears and masses of product on it but the other one is a very similar cut to yours. You said you like the movement but that will always require a wave and product.

Plus you don't even know yet what it will look like straight. Clearly different since it will be straight but you don't yet know how it will hang.

I also think that with respect you're expecting a lot for a £35 cut.

PlumsGalore · 11/05/2018 15:41

I don't think it is too different from the picture of the girl in the black vest.

Your hair looks finer than the models on the picture and you also have to remember that model's picture was probably one of 100 shots taken with her head in lots of different poses and they published the best.

Perhaps your expectations of the finished result were a little high?

Perfectdayx · 11/05/2018 15:57

I think your hair looks similar to the pics before I saw pp’s comments. That choppy bob style is awkward to achieve. I wanted Alex from the One Show’s hair but can’t do it myself as some of it is the way it is styled rather than the cut.

If I were you I would wash and dry your hair and give it a week and see how you feel then.

The other 2 pics are side parted whereas yours is centre parted, so that might make a difference. ?

Only worth going back and complaining if it can be improved on - eg shaped better to get the look you're after - otherwise just make sure you get a different stylist next time.

EnidButton · 28/05/2019 18:40

I think if the layers are blocky then it's fixable. They'll need cutting into to make them blend together better. As it is now it doesn't look really blocky but I appreciate you know your own hair and if it doesn't feel right then it isn't.

You could get some waving tongs and have a go at the wave yourself. It doesn't take long and can even be done the night before and finger combed through in the morning.

It's such a horrible feeling to get a cut you're unhappy with. Flowers I hate it when they rush and don't spend time to understand what's wanted beforehand.
