Shopping for tween girl

Isn't there just a huge gap in the market for the relatively trendy 11/12 year old girls out there? My dd loves getting stuff in H&M and New Look (although lots of NL s915 range is really too revealing). She's too old for Next, M&S, and Debenhams. They're all generally too babyish and not her style at all. She's tall enough for petite ranges in adult shops, but she's gangly and it's very hard to find stuff that isn't too grown up. Where am I missing? Looking for some nicer outfits. We can get the leggings/t-shirts/jeans etc in H&M and Gap, but to get skirts/dresses is difficult. And all these bardot tops - they're not right for girls pre-curves! Please give me some more inspiration on where to look. Specifically at the moment, I'm looking daytime party type outfits. But it's a general shopping question for this age group.

I've found some nice stuff in Mango. Otherwise adult clothing in a v small size. Agree, options are a bit few and far between.

Scabbersley · 04/05/2018 16:16

What does 'revealing' even mean?

MinaPaws · 04/05/2018 19:32

Scabbersley, I'd take it to mean dressing pre-pubescent girls in clothes that are more commonly worn to emphasise female sexuality to attract the opposite sex. So boob tubes, mini skirts, any cut that draws the male eye to the shape and flesh of a child, rather than being cut for maximum comfort and durability.

goose1964 · 04/05/2018 19:41

Primark do 4 &6 now so obviously aiming at a young demographic. I saw a lovely crotchet shouldered top , I bought it in grey but they had the white in the tiny sizes only

Scabbersley · 04/05/2018 23:54

OK so go to top shop and avoid boob tubes

Or jd sports

My dd 12 tells me that hollister is massively uncool

If its got FILA on it its OK apparently

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 05/05/2018 08:08

I bought some nice stuff for dd who is nearly 10 from reserved.com which is a London based shop and online. Reasonably priced and good quality.

pamplemoussed · 05/05/2018 16:03

Bershka And superdry xxs work for us. JCrew kids in sale, PolernoPyret.

andalittlebitofpixiedust · 05/05/2018 16:15

I quite often buy size 6 ladies for my tallish 11 year old. Sometimes even size 8. School cardigans I now get New Look ladies size 6 as they are the only place that do the round neck normal cardigans rather than v necks, for instance.

Keep an eye on the TRF section in Zara.

Agree tho, it’s a huge gap in the market.

BigFatBloomers · 06/05/2018 20:25

And the problem with shopping in the women’s section is that you’re then paying vat.

phoolani · 06/05/2018 22:16

Recently kitted out dd 12 in Zara. We went for a ‘shopping spree’ because she’d done that thing of not only growing out of her clothes but also growing too old for her clothes iyswim. We went Zara and got basically everything; we got a few bits and pieces in mango kids but the Zara stuff was fab and she looks amazing (bit jealous actually)!

BeachyUmbrella · 06/05/2018 22:46

Worth looking at Urban Outfitters too, but more expensive!

KnobJockey · 07/05/2018 08:48

The ladies range Inthe Zara group sizes up small, the TRF range in Zara is aimed at younger women, t-shirts and denim shorts, shirts, etc all good. The dresses are very short though, and there's too many crop tops. An XS/ S there definitely equates to a 13/14 in the kids range there. The basics in the kids range will still be fine, and if she is into things like dungarees, bit of boho styling, then there will be some good stuff for her. Which Zara store are you near? Some are lots better than others! (Ex Zara kids wear manager here, so I may know if there is a good store nearby to you. My daughter was 12 when I left so direct experience here).

The rest of the group size up the same, and are definitely worth a look online. The styles are loosely based on:
Stradivarius- quite boho and floaty in style
Pull and bear- slightly rocky, similar to TRF in style, lots of black & band t-shirts
Bershka- kooky, lots of t-shirts with cute, fun prints

You get bits of the other stuff in all of them, and they all run at similar prices to TRF/ Zara Kids wear- about £18-20 for a pair of jeans, £5-10 for a t-shirt, £15 for a 'party' top or a sweatshirt, anywhere from £10-30 for a dress.

Hopefully there's something in there that suits!

Thanks for the great suggestions. I'm going to give Zara another try with her. I don't know why it hasn't appealed to her in the past. She's always reluctant when I suggest taking a look. I'll show her online first to see if that encourages her!
KnobJockey - We'd go to Brent Cross for Zara. And she loves having shopping days out just for her!

Dd is a huge fan of Stradivarius...(really it is a shop)

PetraDelphiki · 07/05/2018 09:49

And if you ever happen to be in America justice is fab - sadly they not only don’t ship internationally but you can’t even order for USA delivery with a U.K. credit card :-(

KnobJockey · 08/05/2018 08:10

Should be ok for stock in that one I'd expect. If she doesn't think the fashion is good for her in the kids section (sometimes it's young) then go straight to the tables and floor furniture for basics- walls are for collections, tables are for basics and special offers.

While you're in the ladies section, keep your eye out for stands with a signs with a red exclamation mark above them- they're the special price point items, that are often heavily reduced but they don't use sale stickers on if not sale season, but use normal stickers instead. Can get some very good offers, particularly on jackets with them.

BigFatBloomers · 08/05/2018 21:54

I've just come across name it. Has anyone bought from them? Looks like just the sort of thing we're all after.

rainingcatsanddog · 08/05/2018 22:17

At that age, my dd loved Skater dresses from ASOS (women), New Look (Women's not teen) and Primark (womens) as she liked Taylor Swift's fashion at the time. They start at size 4 so are fine if you are tall enough.
