Shopping for tween girl

Isn't there just a huge gap in the market for the relatively trendy 11/12 year old girls out there? My dd loves getting stuff in H&M and New Look (although lots of NL s915 range is really too revealing). She's too old for Next, M&S, and Debenhams. They're all generally too babyish and not her style at all. She's tall enough for petite ranges in adult shops, but she's gangly and it's very hard to find stuff that isn't too grown up. Where am I missing? Looking for some nicer outfits. We can get the leggings/t-shirts/jeans etc in H&M and Gap, but to get skirts/dresses is difficult. And all these bardot tops - they're not right for girls pre-curves! Please give me some more inspiration on where to look. Specifically at the moment, I'm looking daytime party type outfits. But it's a general shopping question for this age group.

Brandy Melville is your friend....

Bizarre US shop that only stocks one size. In our case, our 12 year old dd

DBoo · 03/05/2018 13:56

River island tends to do a nice range.

Asda is definitely worth a look too.

I know tammy girl as a shop no longer exists but they did have an online shop not so long ago so worth a look.

Truffleshuffle do some great hoodies and tees if thats her style.

Thisismynewname123 · 03/05/2018 14:02

BeachyUmbrella - the one size thing is strange! My dd is very slim and we have problems with waist sizes in general (she wears M&S slim fit school skirts) but she's tall so we need to get age 13 or so to fit her.

DBoo - River Island she likes (especially the bags and shoes!) but unfortunately she's kind of reached the limit with them because they only go up to age 12, which is getting small on her now.

Asda - there isn't one near us, but you've reminded me that occasionally I can get t-shirts and shorts in Sainsburys, although smarter or more party-like stuff is a bit babyish. I'll check Asda out online. I've never heard of Truffleshuffle so will search that one out.

Same issue here I'm afraid but no answers so watching with interest.

CSJ113 · 03/05/2018 15:06

I second Brandy Melville, pretty good quality for the price. My daughter (13 now), tall and v slim, loves it.

PianoCat · 03/05/2018 15:11

Fat Face, gap and John Lewis have some stuff but there's definitely a gap in the market

BigFatBloomers · 03/05/2018 15:26

M&Co’s Kylie range has some reasonable stuff and goes up to 13+. A few too many cold shoulder things sometimes but nothing too revealing.

DBoo · 03/05/2018 15:32

Jack wills does nice stuff too but a bit pricey.

If she is tall i think i would look at womens clothing tbh. Asos have a good online selection where im sure you can find things that arent too grown up.

If you have a morrisons nearby they do lovely clothes too.

Superdry clothing is quite small fitting. Pricey again but worth a look. They do casual dresses etc which i dont think will look too grown up.

MadMaryBoddington · 03/05/2018 17:02

Monsoon ‘Storm’ range is aimed at 9-15 year olds and they have some nice stuff, if you scroll past all the prom style dresses.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 03/05/2018 17:16

DD skinny, very tall 11 yr old loves New Look & Primark & she’s also got the odd bit from Sainsbury’s & Tesco in a size 6 or 8 (if it’s a small fitting 8.)

Purplemond · 03/05/2018 20:00

pull and bear and bershka i find there sizing quite small so size s/xs should be fine

MrsFrisbyMouse · 03/05/2018 20:39

Zara?

Lifeaback · 03/05/2018 20:47

I agree that there's a huge gap in the market! Some of the new look and river island kids stuff is ridiculous.

Jack wills/Hollister? They do very small sizes and have a slightly preppy kind of style so isn't too grown up/revealing. Zara kids also good

Teatogo · 03/05/2018 20:50

Primark is fantastic for this age group

MissWimpyDimple · 04/05/2018 07:39

Zara is great for this age, though they only do 11-12 and 13-14 which means some things are a bit small/big.

Mango have nice stuff on line too.

DD still likes some stuff from H&M but the older girl range is very boring.

Majority Zara here.

Scabbersley · 04/05/2018 07:40

If she is tall then topshop

Dd is 12 and wears jeans and sweats from here. Expensive but they fit and last.

SwayingInTime · 04/05/2018 07:44

ASOS size 4 stuff is brilliant for my 12yr old who is petite (so even better for you as not restricted to the petite range) and the styles now aren’t that revealing I don’t think. It’s all culottes or baggy 90s jeans with wide cropped or knitted tees. Good times!

SwayingInTime · 04/05/2018 07:44

Knotted not knitted!

MinaPaws · 04/05/2018 07:55

I was going to suggest H&M. I think we bought from nowhere else when DC were that age. They're the only shop that caters for them properly. But you already know this.

You don't mention Zara. They're really good but more expensive than H&M.

Top Shop is worth a look too. They have a massive range of styles - not all hideous cheap revealing stuff. They're great value and their XS sizes would fit a 12 year old.

Uniqlo do lovely basics for tweens.

Does Monsoon still do a children's range? They used to have gorgeous clothes when my DC were younger (teens now) Never revealing, really tasteful but not at all babyish.

Thisismynewname123 · 04/05/2018 09:26

Thanks for all the good suggestions. Zara keeps coming up, and I haven't tried there for a while. I used to try to convince her to shop there in the past, but it doesn't appeal to her for some reason. I don't know why. Maybe it all looks a bit neutral-coloured when you walk into the girls dept? But I think I'm going to give it another go because I used to get her loads of stuff in there before she started having a veto on what she wore.

I've tried Top Shop with her before. I think she finds it too grown up. So for jumpers and t-shirts it's probably good, but then I'd rather spend H&M prices on those. I'm going to give it another look though. I'm sure Top Shop/Miss Selfridge are just a matter of time before she really discovers them.

Monsoon isn't her style. Too many patterns. Same with FatFace I think.

She would definitely love Jack Wills and Hollister. I'm just trying to hold off as long as possible on spending that kind of money on her clothes (preferably until she stops growing so quickly!) She's around 5'2" already- so definitely fits adult clothes.

And I'm going to give Asos another go... when I have the patience to trawl through pages of stuff to find one or two items that are age appropriate. I'll check Pull & Bear and Bershka on Asos to see what I can find.

Keep any suggestions coming. They're great. I'm going to keep them all in mind for new season shopping.

Look on the Zara website they usually have a bigger selection on there and its free delivery to stores, so if you have one local order a few different items and visit with DD then you can collect order and try on instore so its easy to return/swap anything, i much prefer shopping online with Zara to instore

MinaPaws · 04/05/2018 11:57

OP, Hollister do really big discounts in the sales, and to be fair to them, although they;re more expensive their clothes are so well made. The tee shirts are the softest cotton ever, they never fade or get baggy. DC are still wearing Hollister tees I bought for them four years ago, whereas the cheaper tees are now for bed only.

Purplemond · 04/05/2018 11:58

Also worth checking out Hollister online they seem to always have decent discounts on sales and a plus for your dd the sizes left are always xs/s

HildaZelda · 04/05/2018 12:01

Primark do an adult size 4 which would probably fit her.

Thisismynewname123 · 04/05/2018 12:17

Thanks for all the suggestions. Spending my day going through them all
