Best face wash for 12 year old

My daughter is finally wanting to wash her face properly! I use Liz Earle which she has also used but she wants something more soapy that she can wash with rather than the cream. Is there anything gentle out there that would be good for her to use?
Thanks

Both me and my daughter use the face wash from the Simple range (green bottle) it’s gentle and doesn’t dry our skin out and it bubbles up. Plus it’s cheap as anything 😉

missbonita · 02/05/2018 06:58

My dd uses cerave moisturising face wash

Fullfatlatte · 02/05/2018 06:59

Agree with above. My son uses Simple refreshing facial gel. Neutrogena Grapefruit wash has also been highly recommended on here 😀

teta · 02/05/2018 08:53

Dd2 uses Cerave wash off foaming cleanser. We’re all allergic to simple skin care sadly.

TantricTwist · 02/05/2018 08:58

Simple is awful really strips your skin as are most foaming facial washes, so best to avoid.
My DD 11 uses neutrogena hydro boost water gel cleanser.

Hideandgo · 02/05/2018 08:59

All you need is water to wash your face properly. I feel sorry for girls in so many ways but this is one element of it all. Beauty regimes imposed on them and from such a young age. Is it really necessary?

Sorry OP, I know you mean the best for her. I just think this is one small part of the overall pressure on women to look a certain way and keep their bodies a certain way and spending loads of money on products.

TantricTwist · 02/05/2018 09:05

Yes I think its necessary hideandgo you need to wash all the sweat and grime off their faces otherwise they get pimples esp if they do a lot of sport and are walking to and from School along busy roads with all the pollution.

teta · 02/05/2018 09:06

That’s rubbish Hideandgo. I have two boys too that use face wash. Because they’re getting pretty spotty and greasy. It’s a question of hygiene and learning to look after yourself. dd2 ( 13) uses a face wash and moisturiser because her skin is dry and sensitive. She doesn’t even wear make yet . As she doesn’t need it - beautiful skin.

Ifonlyus · 02/05/2018 09:08

For spot prone skin - a cleanser is necessary. For girls and for boys.

Ifonlyus · 02/05/2018 09:11

Actually - I'm going with the philosophy that if I can help my DDs to find a cleanser and moisturiser that work well for their skin now, they can stick to that routine and not waste loads of money being taken in by advertising for many products which don't/won't work for them.

OutofSyncGirl · 02/05/2018 09:12

It's just rubbish that you can wash your face with only water. Water doesn't remove sweat and sebum (which teenagers have more of) a good cleanse is the most important part of a skin routine. More important than moisturising.

QueenDandelion · 02/05/2018 10:49

As a lifelong acne sufferer I can confirm it does matter what you wash your face with! Some products really do help prevent spots, and keeping your face very clean is a big factor generally as dirt and dead skin cells contribute to spots.

I control my acne now but when I was growing up my parents didn't help at all and I didn't even know there were products to help. So I will buy this stuff for my DC and help them find what works for them. I've just bought a Clean & Clear wash for my 12yo after he got his first spot last week - but will remember the tips on here too.

QueenDandelion · 02/05/2018 10:52

There's "pressure to look a certain way" (though I hate that phrase, it's so vague and the reality is that many people work their own look) but there's also the fact that acne is damaging to the skin, can be painful, and can be very upsetting. Not bowing to "pressure to look a certain way" doesn't mean you should put up with a faceful of zits.

BagelGoesWalking · 02/05/2018 11:41

Try to avoid harsh ingredients, they will ultimately dry out the skin and therefore it will produce more oil to compensate, leading to spots and acne. Include Clean and Clear, Neutrogena grapefruit in that category. Many love Simple but they cause reactions in quite a lot of people.

La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser or Avène Extremely Gentle Cleanser are good, gentle products. They don't foam - which is good - but do the job and are gentle on the skin.

QueenDandelion · 02/05/2018 11:46

The thing is I think it depends on the individual and why they get acne. In some cases it's actually genetic and to do with the shape of the pores, in some it's about extra sebum, speed of skin cell reproduction and other things. So each person needs to find out what works best for them.

kikashi · 02/05/2018 11:49

My DD uses this:
www.cetaphil.com/gentle-skin-cleanser. You can buy it in most Boots, on Amazon etc.

gussyfinknottle · 02/05/2018 11:50

Mine's 11. She currently (when I remind her) uses Dr Bronner's Castile soap or just water. And baby moisturiser (when I remind her).
Will look at getting her LaRoche stuff soon.

Branleuse · 02/05/2018 12:12

a mild soap is perfect to unclog pores and remove dirt and excess oil from the skin. You dont need expensive cleansers and most of them are full of SLS and come in plastic bottles which i would hope most people are trying to reduce their use of now. Baby soap is good, but I use any soap i like the smell of.

Centreparcsooheer · 02/05/2018 13:19

Thank you all!
Sorry didn't mean to open a can of worms but I know that my face isn't clean with just water and I want to teach my daughter good habits not pressurise her to look a certain way!! My arm pits would be very sweaty with just water so I'm sure I need more than that for my face!!

I'll look into suggestions and take her with me so she can have a hand in what we buy

OP posts:
gussyfinknottle · 02/05/2018 13:34

On the armpits thing - I recently bought my dd various non- aluminium deodorants to see what would work for her. Weirdly (or not) she likes the Lush Greench powder most and uses it with gusto.

TantricTwist · 02/05/2018 13:54

I would avoid Cetaphil, Avene extremely gentle cleanser and LRP toleraine dermo cleanser as a teen unless they have super dry skin because they leave a film on the skin.

At their age a gentle non foaming gel cleanser is ideal.

Butterfly1975 · 02/05/2018 14:54

Can you recommend anything in particular Tantric?

I've also been concerned about using Simple and Neutrogena and so was going to invest in some Avene or LRP for my DD who has sensitive skin. I won't if it's going to leave a film as I'm sure that will irritate her skin Shock

MsAtomicBomb · 02/05/2018 15:07

Have been using Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser for yonks and can confirm it most definitely does NOT leave a film on the skin Confused I just gently massage it in all over and use cotton wool to wipe it off. Skin feels very clean and comfortable afterwards. I would avoid anything that foams for acne prone or delicate skin.

BagelGoesWalking · 02/05/2018 18:31

I can't say I've ever felt those two leaving a film on my skin! I have extremely reactive/sensitive skin and those are about the only two I can use.

WrenNatsworthy · 02/05/2018 18:35

If she's getting hormonal breakouts - Neals Yard Remedies Palmarosa facial wash is brilliant for teenage skin.
