How to look summery in leggings/tights and long sleeves ☹️

WyrdSisterWeatherwax · 15/04/2018 20:51

I need help Sad

I have a psoriasis on my arms and lower legs so I live in black leggings or tights all year and have to keep my arms covered down to my wrists which usually means long sleeve cardigans (3/4 length doesn't cover it).

Summer isn't too far off now and I'm already dreading finding anything nice to wear that doesn't get spoiled by black leggings/tights and a cardigan thrown over it.

I've lost any idea of how to wear colours which aren't black or shades of grey and I'm never sure if light or bright coloured dresses look daft with black leggings/tights.

I don't think I really have the style to pull off coloured tights and tan/natural ones don't cover my skin.

I'm size 16/18, large hips/bum and tum and small chest so I don't wear anything too fitted but it still needs some shape to it.

Can anyone suggest what to wear when the weather's nice, that looks summery and isn't all black or grey?

Thanks!

I have no advice but I could of written your post down to even being the same size.
I know how shit it is and I'm having similar worries about what to wear this summer Flowers

What about linen? Long sleeve losser fit linen tunics? Can you cope with linen trousers ordoes it need to beclingly like leggings?

QOFE · 15/04/2018 20:55

Do the leggings have to be black? I'm a massive fan of funky leggings, I've got loads of pairs in some amazing prints.

I'd get some of those cheap shrug cardigans off Ebay - they're under a fiver each and far more summery than a proper cardigan as they're so lightweight. They come in a wide range of colours so you can break away from black!

NetVolume · 15/04/2018 20:56

What about a maxi dress with loose , light cardigan?

I have to cover up for work but wear this combination in warm weather and feel really cool.

peachypetite · 15/04/2018 20:56

What about chinos? Leggings are not flattering and are very wintery

DragonsAndCakes · 15/04/2018 20:58

Lighter/brighter colours definitely help. I don’t actually suit them which is a bit of a problem, so I either go red or turquoise or a sort of safari theme with sand and olive.

I also don’t like to be uncovered. I wear very long skirts or linen trousers.

Summery fabric helps.

So I wear linen on either top or bottom, or a crochet cardigan when it’s cooler etc.

There are lots of jersey printed trousers around too which would look nice with a linen shirt.

How are your feet? Sandals make any outfit look more summery, or something like espadrilles.

Hope there is something there you can use.

Maxi dresses
Maxi skirts
V lightweight shrugs
Palazzo/ harem pants

Thepeopleversus · 15/04/2018 21:04

How about slim fitting coloured trousers, with wafty long sleeved kaftan over the top?

Could you try tan micro fishnets? The texture of them might well give you more coverage than normal sheer tights.

Instead of wearing something over a sleeveless top/dress, try wearing extra sleeves under. Wingz come in different colours:
www.wingzfashion.com. That would give you arm coverage but not be too heavy.

Also: coloured leggings! I like my dark purple ones Smile.

Does any of that help?

Hello Wyrd

Last summer I got some of these long sleeve t shirts from ASOS which covered my bum well while wearing with leggings or jeggings. They were good on holiday.

DBoo · 15/04/2018 21:12

Maxi dressed or jumpsuits and crochet cardigans id go for. Those like kaftan jacker things if still around. Maxi skirts. Harem trousers. Next always have light knits in. My dm suffers with psoriasis so i never really pay it any attention other than thinking oh same as dm.

Ginkypig · 15/04/2018 21:13

Why do you want to cover? If it's due to feeling uncomfortable then that's totally your choice and il shut up except to say, you have no reason to feel embarrassed!

Anyway the reason I ask is because sunlight can be very good for psoriasis. Obviously don't get burned but a bit of light is good.

Have you thought of longer dresses so you don't need tights/leggings?

Primark normally have loads of long sleeve tshirts in loads of colours to wear under dresses.

Or long sleeve cotton bolero?

Il have a look if I can find a link for a bolero to show you the type of thing I mean.

Something like this be nice www.riverisland.com/p/plus-pink-fallaway-floral-d-ring-duster-coat-714700

travailtotravel · 15/04/2018 21:19

I had s horrid rash I needed to keep covered and went full on lagenlook linen. Very wafty!

Flaskfan · 15/04/2018 21:19

I do dove fake tan. It makes it slightly less noticeable and kind of blends it in a bit. I mainly think it's other people's problem if they don't like the look of my skin, so I don't cover it.I also refused to let it control me; I hate, hate having it and feel like I have to fight against it.

I work in a school and kids can be vicious, but I've never heard comments. If they ask, I explain, but that's rare too.

SilverHairedCat · 15/04/2018 21:20

Are you covering through medical necessity, or through your concern about how it "looks"? Be proud of yourself, you've nothing to be ashamed of. Honestly.

However, what about loose linen trousers, loose shirts, light cotton tops etc rather than tight and restrictive clothes?

Lighter coloured leggings under denim skirts, summer skirts etc.

3/4 length sleeve tshirts, beach cover ups?

Diamonddealeroncemore · 15/04/2018 21:20

I keep my arms and legs covered (because I seem to carry a lot of my excess weight there) and in summer I wear wide leg linen trousers (although lots of places do slimmer leg ones as well) with a cami vest and then a linen shirt over the top open like a jacket. If it’s windy I simply do up a single button to stop it flying about and it’s all very floaty and cool. And all parts of the outfit come in tons of different colours.

Flaskfan · 15/04/2018 21:21

Or failing that, wide leg trousers are everywhere this summer.

NewBallsPlease00 · 15/04/2018 21:21

This season is all about the long sleeve maxi- embrace a colour and pattern- look at h&m and Zara.
But I think you've been approaching as cover up rather than fit- wear longer line long sleeve over sized shirts with fitted straight cut trousers/jeans/jeggings
Chinos slightly casual with a turn up/ with more tailored shirts - eh white with a spot
Use coloured accessories and shoes
Get hair and nails done and you'll honestly feel better anyway

Millybingbong · 15/04/2018 21:22

doesnt the sun help it clear up a bit?

It sounds like quite a restrictive uniform

harlaandgoddard · 15/04/2018 21:24

Linen trousers
Culottes
Maxi skirts
Floaty tops
Blouses
Vest top and kimono
Body makeup?

I think light tops look fine with leggings, but you’ll probably want a bit more variety.

FritzyMousey · 15/04/2018 21:25

Maxi dresses look great teamed with a denim jacket. Tube skirt and vest top with a shirt worn unbuttoned over them. Linen shirts instead of cardigans.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 15/04/2018 21:28

Hi op, my Dad had big psoriasis patches on his elbows and legs and scalp. In the summer he would roll up his sleeves to get sun on his elbows as some sun exposure can help. He wore cotton long/short sleeved shirts and trousers all year round though, with socks and sandals in the summer and walking boots plus a cardigan in the winter months so he is not much for any psoriasis friendly fashion inspiration.

My suggestion would be to try looser patterned trousers and some layers of lighter coloured long tops more gauzy and with vests underneath. Or plain trousers and patterned shirts open with vests and tee shirts underneath. It really depends what you like.

Ginkypig · 15/04/2018 23:45

This is a link to the type of bolero/shrug I mentioned.
Just google long sleeve shrug or bolero and lots of different types come up.
eBay had a mesh see through one

Fozzleyplum · 15/04/2018 23:51

Wide leg linen trousers and a long sleeved gauzy shirt. Brora do some in cotton or cotton and silk. They are expensive, but there are some lovely ones on eBay.
