Prom dress advice for dd who hates blingy, sparkly, big fat gypsie wedding or overly girly dresses

hmcAsWas · 11/04/2018 16:23

DD (size 8-10 so can wear most things and they will fit well) is struggling to find something to wear for prom. We looked at the online stock of a nearby shop that specialises in prom wear and she hated everything. She would like something a bit different and no body com stuff because she thinks they are too anatomical. Any advice would be much appreciated

Unfortunately I am in no position to help her as I have little interest in fashion

I have a slim fitting dress, not bodycon, that went flared towards the bottom. I think that black always looks great and timeless! I don't care for the big princess ones.

JoyceDivision · 11/04/2018 16:27

Try Get Cutie dresses, oftenpop up on ebay, different styles and fabrics brilliant.

And get muppets irregular choice shoes!

hmcAsWas · 11/04/2018 16:32

Ah its bodycon then not body com as I put it - you can tell I know nothing about fashion. Where did you get your dress shortcut - since she says she doesn't mind slim fitting if it flares out around the bum and hips?

Thanks Joyce I will look up Cutie dresses

DD has just persuaded a very slim and jeans-addicted friend into a sort of long pearl-grey Grecian-style dress, with the incentive that she can probably get away with her Converse underneath. A bit like this but grey, from what I've seen of the photo.

CiderwithBuda · 11/04/2018 16:44

A friends dd is in the states and wore a gorgeous fitted tux with red heels. She looked amazing. Long blonde hair over one shoulder. Was so impressed at her confidence.

For your dd she might be better just looking at evening dresses rather than prom dresses. She might find something a bit less girly.

shortcutcity · 11/04/2018 17:02

Don't worry, I knew what you meant! And it was ASOS! They have some really great stuff and you don't need to go insane on price. I did have quite a bit of tailoring done on it though, so I would always consider that.

Good luck, I'm sure that she'll look great!

Oh god sorry about the mass posting of links Confused

Duskybluebell · 11/04/2018 17:03

Dd is wearing a floral suit from Zara (can't figure out how to link sorry) and heels. She says she'll probably be the only girl in a suit and should stand out!

steppemum · 11/04/2018 17:06

dd is not there yet, but has already said she will be wearing trousers to her prom. Probably a tux. I doubt she will do the high heels with it though, more likey DMs!

Thanks all - a lot to go on here Smile

My daughter hates wearing dresses and I was quite concerned about prom so after xmas we shut her in changing rooms in Debenhams sale and she tried on loads of outfits- our original plan was a jumpsuit but she ended up with a lovely long black dress from monsoon- not a frill or sequin in sight!

She has fab Star Wars irregular Choice shoes to wear Smile

Definitely look at evening dresses rather than prom dresses and consider jumpsuits they can be really smart.

WorkingBling · 11/04/2018 17:12

what about a tunic dress style? if she's slim, they can be very flattering without being revealing. A plain colour can be very formal, especially with heels and bags and jewellery. or find something a little funky?

BoudicasBoudoir · 11/04/2018 17:17

Sorry, no specific help to offer but - since when has ‘prom’ been a thing in the UK? Is it widespread?

madvixen · 11/04/2018 17:27

I hate wearing dresses but I have to wear them for Mess functions. My go to is always Jessica Wright as I love her range. Girly enough for a Ball but not so girly that I feel like a wannabe princess

OlennasWimple · 11/04/2018 18:03

Jump suit?

hmcAsWas · 15/04/2018 19:07

Yes Boudica, its now absolutely standard (unusual not to have prom)

For my prom I wore black dress from Miss Selfridge that was 90s style (it was 1994 & I was 17) - I was really grungy but choose this plain slinky black long dress with a high neck, crossover back & no sleeves. It had a thigh high split too!

I've still got it somewhere.

It was perfect for a non- girly girl.

For a similar dress in 2018 i would look at Lipsy, Monsoon etc.

hammeringinmyhead · 15/04/2018 19:45

I had a prom when I left high school in 2001. It's not new.

I would definitely look at ASOS. Massive choice and good for filtering out pink and glitter!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 15/04/2018 19:51

My DD had a long, sleek very dark navy prom dress from Monsoon - she looked fabulous and I'm not at all biased and not remotely blingy/girly. I don't know what your budget is, but her dress cost about £70 (that was with a 30% discount).

Definitely worth looking at Monsoon, I think. This is a similar dress to DDs uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_1,mon_1.2/4439446118

redexpat · 15/04/2018 20:02

How about going retro with a 50s wiggle dress or maybe a shirt dress with fuller skirt? Some cute things on lindybop.

Laquila · 15/04/2018 20:05

LOVE the idea of girls going in a tux or floral suit!

My first thought was skater-style dress or flared midi skirt with a cool top, but you’ve had so many better suggestions on here!

MadMaryBoddington · 15/04/2018 20:38

What’s your budget?

This does have a little bling at the neckline but it’s Amanda Wakeley, reduced to £150 from £1.5K, which is an absolute steal for a stunning dress: www.brandalley.co.uk/15392985.html

Elegant and unusual red silk dress:
