Alternative to Jeans, that's not too dressy?

NigellasGuest · 11/04/2018 06:19

I live in my skinny Jeans, at home AND at work. It's almost like they're my default. I don't have a job that warrants dressing up in a suit and all that malarkey. This thing is, I'm getting a bit bored of myself- and I've been searching for alternatives that will still work with the tops i usually wear, as I don't want to replace my entire wardrobe.
I like cigarette pants, but I can't see the wood for trees. If I search them in H&M or Top Shop or my other usual haunts then so many come up and then I start writing them all off because they're polyester etc.

Can anyone recommend a good slimline jeans replacement that's a bit smart bit not overly so? I guess my style is supposed to be smart casual, and I like a slim silhouette. Any suggestions welcomed!

Bumping for you!

I like the skinny chinos from GAP, but haven't gone there so far this year, don't know if they still carry them.

My local department store (I'm not in UK) has tons of tregging/cigarette pants in pretty colours for spring. They're all much of a muchness - just get out there & try some on!

NigellasGuest · 11/04/2018 06:32

I will do a Gap search!

Not so keen on getting out there and trying stuff on - I prefer to shop online. Perhaps I should galvanize myself......

H and m cigarette trousers

Ohyesiam · 11/04/2018 06:35

Boden

NigellasGuest · 11/04/2018 07:11

H&M has a lot of polyester- not sure if I'm being silly about that or not

Call me old fashioned but when I'm looking for a change of style I need to go to a real shop and try things on. There are loads of different jeans/trouser styles around at the moment and it's great but if you're not sure what you want you might have to send for zillions of pairs before you find them.

If was me, I'd pick H&M for a trying on session cos they seem to have every style under the sun in stock. If you'd like something just a bit smarter than jeans, they do these 'slacks' that are narrow leg, fasten at the side (very kind on the stomach) and mostly ankle length. Yes they're polyester and might not last forever (although mine have done surprisingly well) but I don't mind that when I'm experimenting. I think the time to go upmarket is when you know you've found the style you want.

NigellasGuest · 11/04/2018 07:49

You're not old fashioned! Very sensible!

I have a feeling I've tried on those very "slacks" from H&M but sent them back as sizing was nuts and never reordered. They were side fastening. For
that sizing reason, yes I should go into a store - it's just time and lifestyle constraints! It's not a massive change of style I'm undergoing BTW - still the same silhouette, but just a bit of a smarter non-Jeans version. I've seen a nice pair in Jigsaw if anyone's interested.

I will go back onto H&M site and try and find those side fastening trousers - and order 2 sizes up! What is it about H&M and sizing? They really need to sort it out.

Asos have some jersey tapered trousers and they are a) ridiculously comfortable and b) actually quite smart without being too much like work wear.

Floisme · 11/04/2018 08:02

As you say, H&M sizing is nuts and I've bought everything from 8 to 16 there. I won't buy from them online - I'd have to send for 3 or 4 sizes and I just refuse to do that. But sorry, I realise it's not easy for everyone to get to a real shop.

I do like a side fasten and wish more places did them. Its so much neater and more flattering than a bulky zip right on the part where your stomach bulges.

CoffeeOrSleep · 11/04/2018 08:08

I'd try oasis and Boden. Boden are good at honest reviews.

New Look seem to be oddly good at the moment, try Oasis.

If you don't want to go trying things on, accept ordering a lot of stuff and planning to return it.

CoffeeOrSleep · 11/04/2018 08:10

Sorry seen I told you to try oasis twice! Meant to say wearhouse one of those!

NigellasGuest · 11/04/2018 08:18

I also love a side fasten for the same reasons - probably why I ordered those in the first place. I'm going to order a size 14 and a size 16 (I'm normally a 10/12 - H&M take note)!!

It's easy for me to do returns as a Hermes lady comes to the door and collects from me. She actually lives round the corner and I can leave things in a (sort of) secret place if I'm not going to be home.

Teddy I've been searching on ASOS - are the ones you mentioned jersey crepe? (whatever that is)

These are great but maybe order a few sizes (I find I have to size down a couple of sizes)

Corduroy trousers can be good, although it’s difficult to find a quality pair in a reasonably thick cotton fabric that will hang well.

Hoppinggreen · 11/04/2018 09:15

I wear slim chinos quite a lot. I have a couple of pairs from Mint Velvet and also from Boden

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 11/04/2018 09:21

Jigsaw cigarette pants are great

mercurymaze · 11/04/2018 09:23

Uniqlo tons of styles their pull on pants are good

Hemlock2013 · 11/04/2018 09:29

The ASOS jersey trousers sound nice. Has anyone actually got some? Do they bag at the knee? X

Luckingfovely · 11/04/2018 09:53

Okay, I'm going to share a secret with you! Also a skinny jeans devotee, needed something smarter for work but wanted the same feel. I tried on every pair of trousers in the UK, or so it felt.

What I now wear all the time is these:

http://www.marksandspencer.com/ponte-slim-leg-trousers/p/p60129219?image=SD011T595052UUY0XXEC90&color=BLACK&prevPage=srpp_

I do not shop in M&S. Ever.

But these feel like skinny jeans, are crazy flattering, and super comfortable.

I then also found these:

Which are very similar, and also brilliant. Seriously recommend trying!

QueenJulian · 11/04/2018 10:05

Have a look at Cos. Really nice quality too.

pigpoglet · 11/04/2018 10:14

I don't have a preference born with polyester , I think it looks nice and lasts . I don't find it sweaty and frankly don't get the hate for it on here 🤷‍♀️

AuldAlliance · 11/04/2018 10:38

Polyester has a significant environmental impact.
And it makes many people (like me) sweat, though others, more fortunate, may be unaffected.

hipposinacircle · 11/04/2018 13:59

I came on to say Uniqlo too. I love their ankle length trousers.

Dancergirl · 11/04/2018 14:21

I was also going to say Cos!

I have the Gap ones posted above, very nice.

NigellasGuest · 12/04/2018 13:14

Thanks all for the suggestions - there's so much for me to work with now. Much more focus,if I just look it at all the ideas you've posted rather than constantly doing random searches. Thanks
