Hate wearing makeup, but feel ugly without it

Can anyone relate? I hate wearing makeup- the feel of it I mean. I hate feeling like I’ve got stuff on my skin and by 4pm latest I’ve washed it all off.

However, I don’t have good self esteem re my appearance for a myriad of reasons from the past, and without my foundation/ powder/ blush and eyebrow stuff I feel like a troll from under a bridge.

Plus I have super oily skin and I have to keep blotting all the time, and the oil makes me feel uglier.

Don’t know why I’m posting really, just feel like moaning I spose.

I don't usually wear make up but I have very bad skin with enlarged pores and scarring. I love quite pleasant with foundation on but a bit repulsive without it. I don't care enough about how I look to wear make up on a daily basis though. Only when I feel like I need to create a good impression/when attending events where one would be expected to wear make up anyway.

MrsGorilla · 09/04/2018 17:01

That’s great that you aren’t bothered. I was night up by the most vain woman in the world who looks like she’s going to a party every day and I’ve been conditioned to think it’s unacceptable to go out without it.

Have you tried a mineral powder foundation instead of proper liquid foundation? I find if I wear liquid by tea time I'm desperate to take t off, whereas mineral doesn't feel as much like it's there. And you can still get decent coverage.

lolli18 · 09/04/2018 17:03

Same here my face makeup free is yuk!
I get oily patches too and have spots all over and eye bags that I've had all my life and my flipping forehead takes up most my head AngryConfused

MrsGorilla · 09/04/2018 17:10

Bobloblaw mineral makeup makes me itch sadly! I much prefer powders to liquids and creams.

Lolly you have my sympathy! I bet you and I don’t actually look bad to other people though.

I think you need your head sorted out - visible makeup makes most look much worse. Sticky red lips, mucky brown stripes, huge black circles round eyes - coco the clown would blush.

no-one is ugly without. Men are allowed out of the house unmadeup and so are you.

don't know what kind of event expects women to slap up - not one anyone should attend.

BobLoblawLawBlog · 09/04/2018 17:22

Ah that's a shame, have you tried a few brands? If you've only had Bare Minerals (I'm not a huge fan) it might be worth trying a sample of a different one (I really like Lily Lolo) to see if it also makes you itchy?

lolli18 · 09/04/2018 17:23

@MrsGorilla I hope so but inside I feel ugly lol, I do look nice with makeup though just not without haha

I always think ide go natural if I had my eyebrows microbladed, some sort of face skin renewing thing and got a fringe to hide the forehead haha although that's not really natural hahah x

BobLoblawLawBlog · 09/04/2018 17:35

Lolli i have 2 out of 3 of those things! Fringe and semi permanent eyebrows. It does make a big difference as I'm happy to leave the house with just some powder on to get rid of shine and some lipstick (I have a weird pale bit in my lip from a scar so a bit of something over makes me feel so much more confident)

DairyisClosed · 09/04/2018 17:47

@specialsubject one is expected to make an effort for black tie or weddings. Not masses of course but enough to not look dirty (my skin looks genuinely dirty without make up).

@MrsGorilla I was very vain myself. Apart from my skin I have a good looking face. Everything else fits conventional beauty standards as well as my culture's beauty standards as well. So I always had a lot of people telling me how pretty I was, old ladies (with bad enough eyesight not to see all my pimples) going on and on about how beautiful I was and how I should meet their grandson and so on. It made be terribly vain. It also meant that I felt a lot of pressure to live up to it all. Ironically it took my husband (who had dated a string of modles and clearly didn't think I was anything special in that respect not that he would ever say anything but one can always tell
) telling me me that I looked nice but it didn't really matter because he wasn't attracted to me for my looks for me to snap out of it. He completely changed my perspective of myself and helped me realise just how valuable my other traits were and that is was good for things beyond acting as a decorative feature to social gatherings. Needless to say I avoid telling my sons that they are good looking now. Maybe if you spend some time developing your personality or talents you may feel more confident without the make up.

lolli18 · 09/04/2018 17:50

@BobLoblawLawBlog oh I might have to get them done then ! And I think I would just need powder for shine too xx

BobLoblawLawBlog · 09/04/2018 17:54

Lolli the eyebrows have saved me so much time and effort. I get them topped up every two years or so. It doesn't even work out that expensive if you think how much you'd normally spend in two years on brow tints and products etc.

BobLoblawLawBlog · 09/04/2018 17:55

And fringe is basically the cheapest anti ageing solution going. I look a lot fresher with a fringe than without.

lolli18 · 09/04/2018 18:08

Aw that's good will look into it !! X

eggsandchips · 09/04/2018 18:13

I look like a monster without warpaint. However I am still at the edge of 35, looking for the perfect foundation to deal with my full oily skin.

I CBA with putting it on either but really I am quite scary without it!!!

Bluetoo1 · 09/04/2018 18:14

Have a mirror on the wall in a flattering position. So you glance in it and check your hair etc as you leave the house and think, hmmmm, not too bad.
You need a soft light but decent light so you can see yourself.
Honestly if you have a bad light and unflattering mirror it destroys your confidence. My hair dresser's mirror makes me look 5 years older and quite haggard. Very depressing, make sure yours makes you look good.

lolli18 · 09/04/2018 18:20

@eggsandchips it can't be as bad as being 24 and looking like shit 😔

eggsandchips · 09/04/2018 19:00

oh I've always been scary lol, you'd have thought that by now I'd have found a foundation that can deal with enough oil to fry an egg though!!

MrsGorilla · 09/04/2018 19:08

@eggsandchips I feel your pain re the oiliness. I’ve tried every ‘solution’ going and nothing works. I’ve gone through god knows how many primers, foundations and powders from high to low end and I’m always an oil slick. It’s so gross!

JollyGiraffe · 09/04/2018 19:11

I've recently started using the Body Shop Mattifying Lotion. I use it instead of moisturiser and primer, and it's made a huge difference to my skin!

The tea tree also helps with breakouts. It's under £10, would definitely recommend

MrsGorilla · 09/04/2018 21:30

Ooh I’m going to try that!!! Do you mean tea tree oil directly on a spot?

OP posts:
eggsandchips · 09/04/2018 22:02

@MrsGorilla you know I've tried Armani primer and that was crap. I think smashbox are meant to do a good one. Laura mercies one crap too. I don't think they can deal with skin you could fry an egg on 🍳 !!!

MinaPaws · 09/04/2018 22:08

Can you get it down to a minimum.
Dye lashes if they're pale. If not, they shoud look fine without mascara. Get brows shaped.
Have you tried something very basic and neutral for the oily skin, such as wiping it with pure witchhazel lotion or with a tea tree or witchhazel facial wipe a few ties a day, and leaving it to dry naturally?
Add a tinted lip gloss and you might not need anything else.

MrsGorilla · 09/04/2018 22:23

I haven’t tried witchazel for a long time now that you mention it.....

I’ll tidy my brows in the morning. My lashes are already dark. If my skin was better I think I’d feel less self conscious without base on.
