Hate wearing makeup, but feel ugly without it

Can anyone relate? I hate wearing makeup- the feel of it I mean. I hate feeling like I’ve got stuff on my skin and by 4pm latest I’ve washed it all off.

However, I don’t have good self esteem re my appearance for a myriad of reasons from the past, and without my foundation/ powder/ blush and eyebrow stuff I feel like a troll from under a bridge.

Plus I have super oily skin and I have to keep blotting all the time, and the oil makes me feel uglier.

Don’t know why I’m posting really, just feel like moaning I spose.

I LOVE makeup however I cant always be arsed with it ! Have to be honest a few dabs of concealer and a coat of mascara as my quick "look" give me a much fresher faced look than when i cake it on ! Key to this I think is keeping my brows nicely shaped and moisturising before bed .

Also oily skin here , the joys of getting older yet still having the oily skin of my youth !! Confused tea tree/witch hazel face wash and mouisturizer deffo helps !

I have grown to hate wearing makeup. I have Rosacea and as part of that have broken veins and flushed cheeks. If I go make up less I feel self conscious which triggers my cheeks to flush even more. On top of that I have dry sensitive eyes that despuse mascara. I try to go au naturel on my days off but would not dream of going to work like that. I dream of having nice skin!

It may well be the products you are using. How you are applying it or your skincare regime. It could also be fab and just the way you are feeling about yourself. I bet you.look better than you think you do. If it helps I have a small little group all about improving confidence and skincare/Style/makeup skills. You are very welcome.

Friendly and accepting beauty and Style group. All sizes, budgets and ages welcome.

If you hate the feel of make up I think you should stop wearing it, you will probably look better, more relaxed and less stressed as a result because you will have removed the angst of actually wearing it if that makes sense! If you want a bit of colour on your face you could always use a little bit of gradual self tan to give you a slightly sun kissed look, job done!

I love wearing makeup! There are some products that I forget that I'm wearing, while other products are so uncomfortable to wear that I remove my makeup as quickly as possible.

You might find that your skincare is making your skin more oily, so it's worth looking at it. You could be using too harsh products for your skin, which strips the skin of oil, and the skin reacts by producing more oil.
I used to have really oily skin, and it changed when I started cleansing with Cetaphil, instead of a foaming cleanser for oily skin. My skin is still oily, but nowhere close to as oily as it used to be.

I also believe that we are incredibly hard on ourselves - I don't see anyone else's pores, broken veins and oily skin. If you have flushed cheeks and you hate it, I bet that most people see it as a really pretty feature - just like some of us with freckles hate them, while others would love to have them!

MrsGorilla · 10/04/2018 07:58

@riskitforbiscuit I also use cetaphil. And then Vichy Normaderm moisturiser. And duac at night. My skin has been a lot worse in the past with cystic acne and millions of blackheads so things have improved but the it’s the redness and oiliness that bums me out.

And you’re right, I never notice anyone else’s skin!

Have you tried using blotters part way through the day to collect excess oil? These ones are particularly good as they have a bit of salicylic acid in.

(They're fine to use over makeup)

MrsGorilla · 10/04/2018 11:08

@boblob funnily enough I bought a pack of them yesterday! As well as a NYX powder foundation. So this morning I’m simply wearing that and have ditched my grease-inducing foundation (the otherwise v good healthy mix). Seeing how that goes. I plucked my brows but have left off the blush and eyebrow pencil because I hate being too ‘made up’.

OP posts:
BobLoblawLawBlog · 10/04/2018 12:23

Hope they work for you! By the way- my skin isn't particularly oily, is more combination and Healthy Mix makes me greasy. So it could even be that that's exacerbating it.

MrsGorilla · 10/04/2018 14:57

Well having left if off today and just using powder I’m definitely less greasy so that’s a start at least. I saw on the ingredients of HM that it includes an oil, which is certainly the last thing my skin needs in a foundation!

Op have you tried an oil cleanser? Sounds counterintuitive but have been great for my oily skin (rather than a foaming wash etc)

MrsGorilla · 10/04/2018 16:28

Yes, and I ended up with big painful cysts on my head!

OP, for blackheads have you tried that weird black sticky mask that dries like a rubber skin on yoru skin then when you peel it off, the blackheads come off with it? Sounds gross but it's effective. I bought some and DS1 immediately nicked it from me.

MrsGorilla · 10/04/2018 17:34

@minapaws what product is that?

@jollygiraffe thanks, I’m going to buy some tomorrow!

Have you tried just ditching the makeup.

I had really oily skin. Stopped wearing make up because i got a job where it wasn’t allowed. Once i stopped with that and all the removing it etc my skin balanced itself.

Find a moisturiser with no petroleum in - burts bees do reasonably priced ones, and stop with all other products. See how you go in a few weeks.

And i have never met a woman who looks better with make up than without. Except for one who seemed to have removed all her natural features so she could paint them back in again.

MinaPaws · 10/04/2018 18:06

OP it's called T-Zone Charcoal and Bamboo black peel off mask. About £5 from Superdrug for a tube that lasts a while.

MinaPaws · 10/04/2018 18:07

here it is

MrsGorilla · 10/04/2018 19:02

@reallyanotherone I did try years ago but I felt quite ashamed of how I looked without it. Years of acne left me with hyper awareness of my skin. And other stuff contributed to it mentally.

I feel I look quite ruddy without anything on, and unattractive.

I’ll definitely quit foundation and see how I go. Just a bit of powder and blush.

@minapaws thank you.

If you have scars from acne, I'd also recommend Decleor Prolagene. It's amazing- it's a gel and very light, hydrating without any oiliness or stickiness. It's quite expensive though..!
