So apparently skinny jeans are on the way out...

But for me black and grey skinny jeans (not super tight) are a basic that I wear with everything. I am very slim but also short, so wide legs or "boyfriend" don't look any good on me. A slightly baggy blue jean style may look good in the summer with a vest top but not with most of my clothes...

Do I have permission to continue to wear slim fit black jeans? Grin

What shapes don't go with skinny?
I don't think short, fitted tops look great with skinny - they work much better with a wider leg in my opinion because they give you a bit of contrast between top and bottom half.

And yes I agree that skinnies follow my natural shape. They present my legs exactly as they are i.e. reasonably decent but heavy around the thigh and also short and getting shorter by the year as my arse descends.

I think it depends on what you want your clothes to do. Sometimes I like to wear things that let me play around with my shape and that give me a different silhouette. Skinnies give me very little room to do that.

Good! I’ve never worn skinny jeans or leggings because they look ridiculous on me. Luckily I’m 50 and invisible anyway so no one gives a flying feck what I wear or think 😂

jellycat1 · 07/04/2018 12:03

I agree - people have been trying to tell us they're on the way out for ages, usually whilst trying to get us to wear something hideous like those high waisted straight legged monstrosities of a few years back. Boak.
I'm a super skinny devotee and will remain so until I'm just waaay too old for them ... prob not that long now waaaah!

I just tried some old boot legs on that I kept, due to these threads.

God I used to love them, wore them everywhere. From going out to casual. Cost me an arm and a leg, I think about 200 quid and are rock and refuel, which went bust. Soft, faded distressed denim.

I looked like a friggen ageing hippy, the silhouette in my skinnies so much slimmer, sleeker and more flattering, I genuinely can't imagine going out in them now, with all that material flapping round my ankles.

It's weird how our perception changes. When I first put skinnies on I thought "oh not sure about that" and now when I put bootlegs on I think" oh that's really not a good look". 😳

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 07/04/2018 16:13

Yes that's what worries me if baggy jeans come back there's no way I can pull them off being twenty years older and much rounder Grin

God I miss baggy jeans, oh to be 16 again :( it will never be the same second time around.

sheworebluevelet · 07/04/2018 23:09

I remember having this conversation with my O level Economics teacher. He was convinced that commercial forces would mean 1980's skinnies would give way to flares. I laughed. Who would want to look like a 1979's hippy?
Of course he was right and the 1990's grunge boot cut came right back in. For bloody years.

Skinnies will go. The only thing will be how to style wider jeans. The last grunge look of converse and shirt won't work will it or the Trinny and Susanah smart boot. Will be interesting to see what comes in next.

Back in the late 80's we used to wear ripped 2nd hand (aka vintage) Levi's 501s, the more mash up the better.

Early 80s was when stretch denim first appeared. I was still stuck in flares as my parents wouldn't buy me any, but my friend had ones with piping down the seam!!!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 08/04/2018 10:07

Skinny jeans have always been cruel to those of us with big feet and fat ankles. I would embrace the return of any other style of jean! But I've heard it too many times, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Spudlet · 08/04/2018 10:08

I tried a pair of Gap straight leg jeans, and they are awful. They look good for about thirty seconds, then they go baggy and saggy. I feel utterly miserable wearing them. Skinnies or nothing here - especially in winter, when they look good with boots or wellies.

Wide legs are not my friends. No no no.

sheworebluevelet · 08/04/2018 10:08

Ha, I had a pair of skinnies that had three rows of bright white stitching down the leg. Hated them.
I sewed my school trousers in myself, until they were super tight.
And yes, we used to get the train to London to buy second hand Levis from those shops on Kings Road. They never lasted long though. They might look like denim should but they aren't robust.

GemmaB78 · 08/04/2018 10:13

Spudlet - I love my Gap slim fit. I am bored with skinnies now and the slim fit is my current favourite.

WhateverTakesYaFancy · 08/04/2018 10:14

I wear skinnies regularly, but I'd be delighted if a slightly different shape came back in to style. Skinnies seem to have become skinnier and skinnier and thinner and stretchier in the last few years and to be honest, even at 40 and with fairly decent legs, I'm finding them increasingly unflattering.

I long for a pair of really well cut, fairly high waisted, slim jeans in proper denim. Levi's Bold Curve in slim leg were the holy grail for this, but sadly discontinued and unable to find my size on eBay etc. I know they exist because I have seen women in other European countries wearing them (particularly Spain). But where are they?

WhateverTakesYaFancy · 08/04/2018 10:15

should have said at 40 and even with decent legs

Hunter007 · 08/04/2018 13:04

It's so funny. When they first came out I was HORRIFIED by how unflattering they were! Fast forward and my wardrobe is full of them. Maybe my current horror over Mom jeans will be the same and I'll be wearing them all the time in five years...seems unlikely though

Bluntness100 · 08/04/2018 13:27

You need to go for something at the higher end, I wear Tommy Hilfiger, the denim is thick with a good amount of stretch and it's very flattering, if you go cheaper it's thin and stretchy, marks and Spencer's for example can be very guilty of this.

CecilyNeville · 08/04/2018 13:42

I remember auditing my wardrobe in a flat I moved out of in 2006, and trying to decide whether to buy some skinnies or not (I'd grimly hung on to my bootlegs) as I'd kept reading they were just a passing fad. Even though I still wasn't convinced, I went out and bought some TopShop Baxters, to tide me over until the next cut came along. I would never have believed they'd be such a staple twelve years later.

Skinnies still have legs in them IMO. The right cut looks great on most people, but jeans shopping can be so dispiriting, that locating the right pair can be a long, boring process.

Still hate jeggings though.

After a shopping trip of mammoth proportions today I can report back that the trendy shops such as TopShop are full of wide leg jeans, mum jeans and bootcut/flares.
