So apparently skinny jeans are on the way out...

But for me black and grey skinny jeans (not super tight) are a basic that I wear with everything. I am very slim but also short, so wide legs or "boyfriend" don't look any good on me. A slightly baggy blue jean style may look good in the summer with a vest top but not with most of my clothes...

Do I have permission to continue to wear slim fit black jeans? Grin

Love love those denim culottes.

Ellapaella · 06/04/2018 20:31

I love skinny jeans, especially in winter as I don't think any other jeans look quite so good with boots.

CountFosco · 06/04/2018 20:52

I love my skinnies I do and even though I live in the north and most people are still in skinnies the coolest dressers here are moving away. I don't think we are ready for bootlegs again but widelegs are fine and I do wish they did this in short so I could wear them. I think they are AWESOME.

I'm surprised those of you who wore drainpipes in the 80s are surprised things might change. I feel like I've been through a whole jeans cycle now and the only thing that fills me with dread is low waist. I'm wearing Mom jeans today and I love their high waist and slightly baggier silhouette. It's a good time to be wearing jeans!

Bluntness100 · 06/04/2018 22:03

Those denim and m&s cullottes are a shocker. They probably also make your arse and thighs look huge too. 😱

I'm of the vintage of remembering the first time round,, and still remember the hilarity and mocking afterwards. It was a short lived trend,,,as people realised quickly they didn't look good in real, life.

Cullottes are a definite no...history has spoken. 😍

chantico · 06/04/2018 22:08

In the event it does I will turn into a prepper and horde 20 pairs

Me too!

Straight leg and tapered are fine (just not me) but wide, boot cut and flare make people look really chunky, as the silhouette doesn't narrow where it should. Your arse is the same size whatever is below it, bigger legs just make everything look rather solid.

TalkFastThinkSlow · 06/04/2018 22:11

I only own skinny jeans. Bought a new pair this morning Grin

AuntieStella · 06/04/2018 22:11

"I can remember thinking I’d never veer from bootcut jeans. Victoria beckham clung on longest with them"

And bloody awful those years were too. I didn't buy any jeans for about a decade.

Stockpiling, because I expect that the shape I prefer might vanish totally. Which is a pity, and shows how narrow/rigid the industry of 'fashion' is (as opposed to the idea of style)

0hCrepe · 06/04/2018 22:43

Ugh the low waist thing with thongs showing over the top everywhere. High waist took so long to be widespread I hope that doesn’t go anytime soon.

RossGellersWhiteTeeth · 06/04/2018 22:54

Absolutely yes! I love them and will forever. I distinctly remember the first time I tried on skinny jeans - it was 2006 and I was in New Look, they’d just got some in stock. I went in with my friend and tried them on to show her how gross they’d look compared to my beloved bootlegs and....well. It might be my imagination but when I went to the mirror I think You & Me by the Wannadies started playing, the room went all soft focus...and my legs looked so elegant. I bought two pairs and a pair of heels as well.

The bootlegs were never seen again.

megletthesecond · 06/04/2018 22:59

I'll stop wearing skinnies when it stops raining in the UK. My brief forays into flares and bootcut ended up with flapping wet ankles every time it rained.

Ellapaella · 07/04/2018 07:43

TopShop Joni's - skinny jeans with super high waist are jean perfection imo.

JudasPriestley · 07/04/2018 07:53

Good. I loathe skinny jeans. People only think they look good because they've lost all objectivity. Once you see how weird it is that all modern women are walking round with a silhouette like Max Wall, you can never unsee it.

Mind you, I'm a fan of the trailing long skirt so am probably not the best judge.

Bluntness100 · 07/04/2018 08:24

I think that's a bit harsh. It really depends on your body shape. Many women look fantastic in them. From curvy, to petite to tall and slim.

I'm more in thr latter category, as is my daughter, and one of my most flattering outfits is navy skinnies, navy jumper and highish chunky heeled ankle boots, it elongates your body due to being all one colour and makes your legs look much longer.

The issue only comes in when they are ill fitting or you dress them wrong. However that can be said for all jeans or trousers.

I get if you're heavy particularly in your bottom half, you might feel self conscious, but again dressed correctly and the right size, they can work.

There is nothing wrong with the female body shape, irrelevant of size, and it's fine to not want to wear them personally or dislike them personally, but you go a bit too far when you slag off everyone else.😔

Paleblue · 07/04/2018 08:25

I decided to move on from skinny jeans a while ago and don't regret it. I am wearing dark straight leg or lighter colour boyfriend jeans.

mintich · 07/04/2018 08:28

Meghan Marnie looked great in her bootcut jeans yesterday!

0hCrepe · 07/04/2018 09:17

I have to admit one thing I miss about them is the boots under thing. I hate the gap between jean and sock when you’re wearing ankle boots.

0hCrepe · 07/04/2018 09:17

Well if MM is wearing them surely everyone will start now!

0hCrepe · 07/04/2018 09:18

Have you got a pic?

dudsville · 07/04/2018 09:23

I think a lot of people would say I don't look good in them because I'm not skinny, but I love them. They are so practical and comfortable and I think they are very sexy and feminine. I'm a size 14 and curvy.

MySockIsWetAgain · 07/04/2018 09:24

Does anyone remember life before skinny jeans? I thought they looked awful when they started getting trendy and now of course you will have to prize them from my cold, dead hands.

I do. I was 2 years late to the fashion of skinnies, as I was of the "You have to pry the 90s wide legs from my cold dead hands". I expect I'll be 2y late getting rid of them as well.

On the other hand, maybe I still have some of my Britney style jeans... Should I go search? Grin

Floisme · 07/04/2018 09:24

If you're going to hoard, make sure you stockpile shoes/boots and tops too. Because the problem with saying you're not going to give up skinnies is that they're not just a trend, they're a silhouette. So when they do go (which they will) everything else will change too.

Even when I don't like a new jeans shape, I normally find that something eventually sucks me in. So although I'm not a fan of skinnies, I do like the long, slouchy jumpers and the flat boots that came with them. They don't work too well with a wider leg and I'll miss them.

I've been through all the jeans cycles at least twice now and I can honestly say there are good and bad things about all of them. I agree with Count that the only thing I would draw the line at doing again is the inanely low waist. I kept a few pairs of wide legs from last time but half of them are unwearable because they're so low - apart from anything else, they're really uncomfortable.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 07/04/2018 10:21

I predict we will all be wearing bell bottoms with a paper bag waist. Dont all go rushing out to the shops at once now....I bet m&s have some Grin

AuntieStella · 07/04/2018 11:15

What shapes don't go with skinny (which is essentially female body shape with no widening or flappy bits)?

It's a genuine question - I can see why some styles of shoes/tops don't go with bottoms shapes that do not follow the female form, but not the other way round.

Fflursan · 07/04/2018 11:33

Im ok then cos i wear super skinny jeans!

🖕🏼 To those so-called experts. They know jack shit. Love my jeans!
