About to take the plunge and chop all my hair off, but need advice.

I am 47 years old and a dark brunette with thick hair that has a bit of a wave to it and a rapidly increasing amount of grey. The overall look is one of an ageing witch! Blush

It’s currently below bra strap length and does absolutely nothing for me, in fact I think it’s making me look older, especially as I end up wearing it all scraped back off my face into a ponytail pretty much every single day, to avoid the wild witchy look.

I had it cut to chin length a few years back and that was ok, but a bit mumsy and annoyed me by constantly falling around my face, whilst being too short to tie back.

For context, I have two dcs with different disabilities, a younger dc who has recently started show similar signs to one of the older dcs and is under investigation and a hidden disability myself. I and up at 5.45 every morning and spend all my time running from one school meeting or hospital appointment to another, in between fielding emails from three schools and phone calls from schools and drs and fighting for school or medical support. I have literally no time for myself to faff about drying/styling long thick hair. In addition, my disability prevents me from having my arms up in the air styling my hair for ages, even if I had the time available to do it!

So, I really want it gone. I had short/pixie cuts for years when I was younger and firmer of jaw and it was just so much easier to manage than having to spend hours drying it and plaiting it to get it out of the way so I can sleep without it getting in the way.

I want to chop off my hair to kick-start me into a health overhaul, as I haven’t been taking care of myself and really need to up my game, as if my health crashes I can’t take care of anyone. I’m planning to re-start interval training, which will only take 20 minutes a day, that I will have to try and squeeze in wherever I can and short hair will make the post-workout shower so much quicker, saving me a lot of time.

I love the look of pixie cuts, but am aware that, no longer being anywhere close to the first flush of youth and rather closer to a size 16 than 14 these days, it is unlikely to suit me like it used to. I am also wary of ending up looking too mumsy if I keep too much length. When I had it cut to chin length, we went to our annual weekend off music festival and I felt really out of place and uncomfortable. Equally I don’t want to end up with trying to look edgy and ending up with one of those really unforgiving super short spiky styles.

I’m not brave enough to put up a photo, but if it helps, my face is fairly long, with high cheekbones that aren’t as prominent and they used to be, but still there-ish.

I have looked at hundreds of styles, but am still unsure which way to go. Tempted just to go really short to let the grey come through, then grow it into a better style, but don’t want to feel out of place on our festival trip again this year, as it’s the only break I get from all the stress in my life.

Any thoughts?

Ah, you’ve done it. Fab.

Find some good wax.

Thanks all. Really not confident enough to put a photo up - sorry.

Still no regrets this morning, but will admit to being slightly nervous about the school run yesterday afternoon. Several people told me it looks amazing and others studiously avoided commenting, so I guess they’re the ones that don’t like it, but that’s fine, I didn’t do it for anyone but myself.

Husband arrived home late last night and he loves it. Says I look years younger and less tired and two out of three of my dcs love it. My eldest (16 year old boy) said ‘It’s hair, what’s to say’, so I guess he doesn’t hate it or I’d most likely have been told how embarrassing I am. I was worried my dd wouldn’t like it, as she’s been going on and on about loving long hair for a few days. Both she and her teacher looked straight through me when I went to fetch her from school yesterday. I was standing there, right in front of them waving! Then the penny dropped and she came flying over saying ‘Mummy you were right, it looks lovely.’ Bless her. Smile

Amazingly, I have woken up this morning and been able to go on the school run after just running a wet comb through it, although it still has the mousse in it that my hairdresser put in yesterday, which is probably helping. I prefer it this morning, with it looking less ‘done’, iyswim. Going to have a shower shortly, then we’ll see if I can manage to make it look decent without the help of a hairdresser!

MrsTylerJoseph any suggestions? I know nothing of hair products.

Well done op!
I'm off to the hairdresser's tomorrow to get a disastrous cut sorted ☹️
I had a shoulder length, all one length bob but my hairdresser left so I asked her colleague for just a trim. She's cut it into a graduated bob that I can't do a thing with. My hair's very fine and the longer front pieces are driving me mad.
So.....it's getting cut short, and I can't wait I nearly took scissors to it myself

DavetheCat2001 · 21/04/2018 08:13

Sounds fab OP! Well done for being brave and going for it.

I've been growing mine for what feels like forever now, from a short bob - longer at the front and really short at the back.

I have dreams if long beach wavey hair, but actually think iftern it just looks really dry and frizzy.

I'm not brave enough to go short though!

I'm being uber brave and pisting this pic.. i am still in bed, so looking dog rough but this is my hair now, I keep wondering should I keep growing it or chop the whole lot off, and embrace my grey.. it's a kind of ombre at the moment.

Will ask for the pic to be removed soon!

I'm turning 45 this year and I'm feeling very very middle aged.

I'd definitely recommend a pixie cut - if it's cut with the layers in the right places/proportions then it's very low maintenance - just a bit of mouse or styling wax and then out the door. There are a few examples here:

I'm going for a buzz cut next week and bleaching it blonde - similar style to Amber Rose

DavetheCat2001 you don't look rough at all! FWIW from your 'voice' on here I'd imagined you with a cool dark wavy pixie, like some of the cuts EraArils linked to above so if you're thinking about it go for it.

DavetheCat2001 · 21/04/2018 08:50

Thanks count.

I think i'm just concerned that a short cut would make me look older, and I've been growing out my bob for bloody ages!

Will give it some thought though.
