Tall ranges are so unfashionable

YourEmailInboxIsFull · 01/04/2018 21:00

I think I might change career and become a designer for women's tall fashion

Wtf are Next thinking with these tops?

www.next.co.uk/shop/gender-women/category-cardigans-category-jumpers-category-shirts-category-tunics-category-vests-sizetype-tall#1_14

All I want are some nice fashionable tops for spring/ summer but, no impossible. Next are aimed at the older generation, Topshop think tall people all want to show off their stomach and Dorothy Perkins just seem to love the floral this year and basic t-shirts.

Any other tall ranges out there? Plain, smart tops?

Trying to think what I've bought recently
Long tall Sally - the everyday top which has buttons (for work) and the kaftan top for with jeans
A pearl and Earl top which is a decent length, has a lightning bolt on the front
Next had a decent striped top but long sleeves, sheer stripe it was called
I sometimes have luck with Sainsbury's, Great Plains or matalan but often resort to layering matalan long vest tops under stuff
Woolovers chunky v neck merino/cashmere jumpers are a really good length, I got two in the sale

CMOTDibbler · 01/04/2018 21:09

Have you tried Asos?

Ollivander84 · 01/04/2018 21:09

Oh I also got the sea salt Ginny(?) top which is just about long enough

GreyGardens88 · 01/04/2018 21:11

They're so drab and oddly fitting

ninnypoo · 01/04/2018 21:12

ASOS tall are very good.
Topshop is hit and miss but some good finds.

goose1964 · 01/04/2018 21:14

I liked some of those tops, but then again I'm probably one of the older people they've been aimed at

Sailorjerrycherry · 01/04/2018 21:14

Actually very impressed with Boohoo tall range. Jeans are brilliant!

YourEmailInboxIsFull · 01/04/2018 21:37

Have you tried Asos?

They are my first choice but for some normal tops and blouses, there is little choice - very bandeau / long sleeves / midi or see through tops.

Will have a look at boohoo. I’m mid 30’s and when I look at the fashion I wouldn’t be seen dead in some of the younger stuff ( very revealing and just not “me” at all) but other option is to start wearing tunics with florals (again not me)

I wear dresses for work but I fancied a couple of nice tops because I have skirts in my wardrobe but have nothing to go with them.

Jcrew do tall and Boden do long length trousers

YourEmailInboxIsFull · 01/04/2018 21:49

Boohoo want me to dress like a I’m going clubbing to work Wink boohoo tops loving the PVC, low cut and crop tops. There’s one too out of about 200 that I would class as plain, spring and suitable and even that probably needs a cardigan! This one

The 'long' length on Biden is 32-33''! Long or tall is usually 36-38''.

ExpectingToFly · 01/04/2018 22:47

Gap has a tall range just bought a lush dress from them. Actually midi length ok me!

AliciaMayEmory · 01/04/2018 23:25

I usually shop online with Gap in their tall range, Abercrombie (their sleeves are much longer than normal in their regular sizes and they do a tall in some styles?), sometimes New Look tall range comes up with a gem or two, and Asos is worth a look every now and then. I avoid topshop and Dorothy Perkins as they are not my style at all. I agree, though, tall ranges are awful. Next is one of the worst culprits, but it's not limited to their tall range! I wish we had more choice, better fabrics and the designers didn't think we were all 18 years old.

Mercurial123 · 02/04/2018 00:34

As mentioned above J Crew has plenty of options for tall sizing.

WhateverTakesYaFancy · 02/04/2018 08:06

I feel your pain, OP.

Next does a few decent Tall basics (jeggings, joggers, vests) but most of their stuff is hideous.

LTS is ghastly. I check the website in hope every season, but it’s all so frumpy!

ASOS - occasionally have success with dresses, but their tall jeans are a terrible fit and go all baggy at the knee, and a lot of it I too skimpy/young for me.

I have success with Hobbs and occasionally Boden for work dresses (Boden does some styles in Long, Hobbs seem to cut a lot of their dresses in a midi length which is knee length on me).

H&M and New Look do decent longer length skinny jeans, but they’re very skinny. I had great success with Levi Curve jeans, which cane in a 34 & 36 inch leg, but they’ve been discontinued.

It’s slim pickings out there!

WhateverTakesYaFancy · 02/04/2018 08:09

Agree about Boohoo & Topshop. I’m 40. I like to look nice, but I’m not in the market for cold shoulder tops, cut-out mini dressses or hot pants 😆

HRTpatch · 02/04/2018 08:10

Yes I'm with you there.
And it has always been difficult...as a teenager in the seventies it was even worse.
It frustrates me so much...I have the money to spend on quality contemporary clothing but am thwarted because of my height.

blueskypink · 02/04/2018 08:24

Why do some shops have petite ranges on display in store, but not tall ranges? I don't like buying on line. Probably need to try on 50 items which look ok on the hanger before I find one that looks ok on me and can't be arsed with returning lots of stuff.

It's very depressing to go shopping and know that the vast majority of trousers, skirts and dresses on display can be ruled out because they're too short.

RingtheBells · 02/04/2018 08:37

It is very hard to find nice plain tops that aren't in black or navy in places like Next tall, I do buy most of my coats from there as it is the only place that fits my long arms properly, at 5'10" I find a lot of LTS too long and have only bought plain cardigans from there recently as I don't really like the styles in tops apart from the plain jersey basics, of which I have a few.

I seem to live in White Stuff and Seasalt tunics nowadays which is fine as I am 60 and only work part time, mainly dress casually and don't mind a bit of pattern and three-quarter sleeves (I think I must be their marketGrin).

YourEmailInboxIsFull · 02/04/2018 11:36

Why do some shops have petite ranges on display in store, but not tall ranges?

I think the demand isn’t there (because the designs are so terrible) and someone in a dark room looking at sales of tall v petite will decide that more money can be made from petite / normal sized clothes taking up vital space in their shops.

Glad it isn’t just me that feels this way.

Very frustrating and yet dare I say, it has got better in the last 10 years (ASOS, DP are ok and have more variety). I just find it so annoying that I have to shop online and can’t visit a shop and then when I review online I’m expected to dress like a 17 year old or a 60 year old, there’s nothing in between.

I'm 5'11 and just wear regular fit clothes. I can't remember the last time I tried on something that was too short.

WhateverTakesYaFancy · 02/04/2018 12:33

Really?! Binky.

I’m 5’11 and can’t wear trousers from most high street shops. Probably 75% of dresses are too short or the waist/bust sits in the wrong place. Coats are 50/50 hit and miss as to whether sleeves/shoulders will fit me. Vests and tee shirts almost always too short in the body.

😞

YourEmailInboxIsFull · 02/04/2018 12:45

Unusual @BinkyandBunty
I would say 98% of high street clothes do not fit my body shape.

I’m 5’11 and have:

  • long torso
  • breasts lower than norm (not saggy)
  • long arms
  • small bum and legs (size 10)
  • long slim thighs / legs
  • waist belly size 12-14
  • broad back but small boobs

All of the above contribute to clothes:

  • being short in the arm
  • tight around shoulder area but loose around breasts
  • tops riding above belly button
  • trousers and jeans slim fitting on legs but tight around belly
  • trousers too short
  • skirts and dresses above knee (mini)

Also 5' 11" and exactly the same problems as Whatever and Youremail
