Why is my hair so straight?!

snoooop · 27/03/2018 16:48

This is my hair when I don't do anything to it. I washed it and it air dried. I hadn't even brushed it at this stage.

Just why is it so fucking straight?! It's very slippery and won't hold a curl no matter what I do. I can have it blow dried in the salon and strut out swishing like a fucking hair model and by the time I've driven home it's completely straight again.

Some of my friends had straight hair which went curly during puberty or when dying it but mine has remained true to its roots.

I feel like it hangs there like a pair of curtains. I just wish it had a tiny bit of movement to it.

Is there anything I can do, or am I resigned to having poker straight hair for the rest of my life?

And I didn't even upload the picture Hmm

I have absolutely dead straight hair. I have (and have had for years) a very short choppy crop, and use wax to give it texture - its the only thing that gives it any sort of movement.

Colour (my hairdresser does a base colour with bits of a darker colour combed through it) also helps both in the way it looks but also because dying my hair roughens it up a big & makes it less slippery & more textured.

Had it permed back in the day (ie 80s!) and even that fell out in a very few weeks.

Sadik · 27/03/2018 17:03

I am also very into hats Grin

PuppyMonkey · 27/03/2018 17:07

I think you're so lucky to have naturally straight hair. It will do anything you want. You just need an interesting cut imho. I’d start by cutting it a bit shorter but keep all one length.

Babyliss Big Hair might help give it some bounce?

KirstenRaymonde · 27/03/2018 17:12

My hair is the same. Even my hairdresser says there’s no point trying to curl my hair, it’ll just fall straight out. Though I notice the difference for a day if I have a big blow dry. I blow dry upside down which helps for a bit more oumph, but generally I’ve just accepted it. It’s also actually best just long and straight, layers don’t really look right without a good blow dry and I can’t do that the same at home.

Everyone always wants what they don’t have, curly girls often want straight, those of us with straight want curly. Sometimes we just have to accept what we have! At least plain and straight is nice and easy.

VickieCherry · 27/03/2018 17:17

My hair is the same - no natural bounce or movement. The only way to get it to hold a curl is to let it dry curled from damp (so overnight, preferably) - which is a total pain, so I don't bother. Heat curls fall out within a couple of hours.

My friends envy my ability to let my hair air dry and it be dead straight, so I figure I'm lucky in some respects. And my partner has shoulder-length ringletty hair (which he hates), so I get my curly fix from him :D

purplecorkheart · 27/03/2018 17:38

Mine is the same. Although given that I spend little time on my hair in the morning it is handy that it dries very straight. Curly blowdries etc fall out before I leave a salon.

Tigres · 27/03/2018 17:49

You'd have loved it in 2001 😂 Loads of girls in my school were literally ironing their hair Hmm that was a weird time to be alive.

Mine used to be like this. Poker straight and would just hang lifeless around my face like Cousin It. Looks so boring in photos when I look back.

After a surgery (and losing too much weight) it went wavy and partially curvy. But still hard to manage!

I vote perm. Grin

Only joking. What happens if you French braid it slightly damp (not wet) at bedtime then take out in the morning? This looks great on me but it's not for everyone. I think it works best on thick hair.

I'd love to wake up with natural, effortless big waves. Sigh.

snoooop · 27/03/2018 17:50

Nice to see some people in the same boat!

I've always had quite long hair but chopped it off into a 'lob' that nearly hit shoulders at the front last summer. The reason I cut it was that it never looked like the gorgeous swishy long hair pictures with lovely loose waves tumbling down their back.

I just looked like a witch. Hmm

Maybe I should cut it again?

I would love a perm to do loose waves but I've never heard of someone having a good experience with them on long hair recently.

Yes! I look exactly like the mid 2000's idea hair type Angry

I'm finally trendy, only over a decade late!

Ah yes, the blow drying upside down trick is a good one for volume too.

Maybe try one of those products for beach waves and scrunch too? Looks nice and sultry, but on the other hand it can be a bit drying.

tortelliniforever · 27/03/2018 17:55

My hair is like this too. I've always hated it. I resent paying for a blow dry at the hairdresser's as it just falls out by the time I get home.

Bloomed · 27/03/2018 17:56

Yes some kind of texturising spray/dry shampoo/salt spray could work before curling. You need some grip.

FourEyesGood · 27/03/2018 17:57

Mine’s the same, but shorter. I had a perm last summer and my hair now holds a curl (but it’s in much worse condition). Had my second perm this afternoon because the original one had pretty much gone.

snoooop · 27/03/2018 18:30

Four what sort of perm did you have?

OP posts:
ilovewinterpansies · 27/03/2018 18:40

My hair is the same and it drives me mad.

Recently discovered Nioxin - check it out. Not cheap but worth it as it has definitely given my hair more texture and lift.

MoleGrey · 27/03/2018 18:44

Mine is the same! Things I have found to give it a bit more shape are: evo gluttony shampoo/conditioner, drying with a large round brush (I have a fab ghd one) or using a babyliss big hair. It doesn't change the straight-ness but does stop it looking so avril lavigne..

toffee1000 · 27/03/2018 18:45

Long, poker straight hair is actually very fashionable right now, it’s not just a 00s throwback! Every young woman has long straight hair. It’s v unusual to have short, curly hair (like mine).

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 27/03/2018 18:45

You break
My heart complaining about all that beautiful sleek shiny hair

I would kill for it

I have a big mane of frizz. Can in theory curl or straighten it, but takes forever, and lucky if it last the day.

Most days I have no choice but just tie it up and accept another bad hair day

peachypetite · 27/03/2018 18:47

I'm like you. I've had it cut to about an inch under my chin. Try Davines salt spray, it's changed my life!

snoooop · 27/03/2018 19:32

Sounds like salt spray is something to try.

I actually have a babyliss big hair, but I've never been able to figure out how to use it properly!

Goldmonday · 27/03/2018 19:34

I vote perm, they have come a long way nowadays!!! You can see how shiny and thick your hair structure is, I think a perm is your only option.

If you do decide to go down that route, please keep up updated with pictures!

snoooop · 27/03/2018 20:20

What sort of perms can they do these days? I just have visions of the perm I had when I was a teenager that left me looking like a fucking poodle Angry

I would love love LOVE big loose curls Sad

OP posts:
Goldmonday · 27/03/2018 20:53

To be fair I love the 80's look!!! But they have developed perms a lot now to achieve different types of curls and waves. Honestly my advice would be find a few pictures you like and take them to a decent hair dresser to talk through your options

goose1964 · 27/03/2018 20:54

.At least you don't have frizz
