How do you wear high heels ?!

Thirtyrock39 · 24/03/2018 17:08

I have just spent half an hour trying to find my favourite flat shoes and have had to wear my heels instead they are absolute agony and have had to stop at a friends and borrow a pair of her ankle boots to save my from an evening of pain !! However I know plenty of women who will happily spend an evening wearing these instruments of torture - how? Why? And do they ever stop hurting???

Mulberrysilk · 24/03/2018 17:30

I don't wear them much because I tent to stomp in them but I never find they hurt.

Kursk · 24/03/2018 17:32

Clench your bum while walking it helps!

LonginesPrime · 24/03/2018 17:39

Walk on the balls of your feet and just use your heels for balance.

Obviously some shoes are more comfortable than others - I wouldn't plan to wear ones that are uncomfortable for any length of time though.

thedevilinablackdress · 24/03/2018 22:53

The answer is to get rid of all your high heels and never wear them again. People who can wear them are a different species to me. Possibly aliens.

cantthinkofanythingwitty · 24/03/2018 23:03

I second what thedevil says

Custardo · 24/03/2018 23:10

i third what thedevil says

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 24/03/2018 23:52

I don’t find heels uncomfortable or difficult to walk in at all, years of training! Or maybe I am actually an alien......

Thirtyrock39 · 25/03/2018 00:33

My feet are still on fire from the ten minutes I wore the heels for (then swapped for a comfier pair of friends) . I don't think I'll be able to walk tomorrow !!

i fourth what thedevil says... i tend to stare at the feet of those who wear high heels, specially stilletoes Blush

halfwitpicker · 25/03/2018 00:40

How high were they?

They only really need to be an inch or so

Anxiouschild · 25/03/2018 00:42

Yup, what thedevil says. I wear heels to weddings (ceremony/photos only, flats for after), funerals, and possibly a job interview although that would be a little incongruous in my line of work.
I remember queuing for the loos at raves and wondering how on earth the women in front of me managed to dance for 8+ hrs in those crippling shoes. And then feel quietly smug about my super-comfy trainers.

SomewhereontheM6 · 25/03/2018 02:09

Fifth to thedevils post.

However comfy they start they hurt your toes PDQ. No idea how you can wear them for a night out let alone a whole day, although I have tried.

Ginkypig · 25/03/2018 03:13

It's the balls of my feet that burn like the fires of hell when I wear heels, so apart from very occasionally I don't!

I can walk ok in them but it's just not worth the pain.

scifisam · 25/03/2018 06:41

I used to wear high heels a lot! I was known for it!

But I wore slip-on trainers wherever I wanted to wear high heels. It's actually quite easy to potter around the office in heels. And it kind of feels nice. But fuck that shit when it comes to getting on and off the tube.

Winter I'd just wear fairly high-heeled boots most of the time. They're actually fairly comfortable. I'm disabled and my feet can't make the arch shape these days, but when I was able-bodied boots with heels were magic.

LiquoriceTea · 25/03/2018 07:05

I can't wear them and didn't particularly want to when younger.
I have wished I couild sometimes for job interviews/I can't pull off that smart groomed look.
I feel better about it sometimes when you read podiatrist and older people say they wish they hadn't!

DarkRoomDarren · 25/03/2018 07:16

I can wear heels and did every day while I was working, but they were only about 2-3 inches high. The BIG high heels hurt my feet.

I saw a chiropodist once, who said that the shape of my toes naturally drew the pad on the balls of my feet’s forward, exposing the bony bit of my feet, so I would always find high, high heels sore, as the bone would hit the ground as I walked.

Add to that the fact that I’m tall and have a high centre of gravity, (top heavy), and it’s just physics*! I’m never going to be as balanced in heels as a petite pear shape for example.

I knew a girl who was tall and top heavy with tiny feet and she really couldn’t walk in any heels at all. She just went over.

*I only did double award science at gcse and got a c, so my understanding of physics is shaky at best Grin!

flaggerblasted · 25/03/2018 07:37

I like heels! I like clip clipping around in them at work 😆. I'm only 5'4'' so I feel I've got a bit more presence and can take on anyone. A bit daft really but that's how my head works Confused. I do think you develop a muscle set if you wear them regularly and also I'm fairly fit (well 2 aerobics sessions a week)

Narkle · 25/03/2018 14:43

I wear heels all the time, but there are only a handful of companies, which produce decent, properly padded ones that I can last in all day. I am a teacher, so on my feet all the time.

The one thing I cannot and would not do is drive in heels. I have a special, gruesome pair of old trainers, which I keep in my car as driving shoes and then switch them once I get out.

LittlemsNoBoobs · 25/03/2018 15:18

I can't wear them for five minutes without feeling like my feet are on fire. It doesn't seem to matter how "comfy" they are supposed to be, or what I spend. I see so many women walking around in heels and looking perfectly fine. I honestly don't think my feet are built for it! I used to wear them going out when I was younger but drinking until I couldn't feel the pain was part of my going out schedule Blush

CountFosco · 25/03/2018 19:31

I have just got rid of all my heels. I spent my 20s in DMs and then thought I needed to wear them to look like a grown up in my 30s so suffered agony in my toes for a few years but after having DD1 in my late 30s I couldn't bear the discomfort so swapped to all flats. My feet are much happier, it's how squeezed in my toes are that's the killer in heels. Absolute agony as soon as I put them on.

Passthecake30 · 25/03/2018 19:36

I can't walk in them, I'm 6ft with size 6 feet. I literally feel like I am going to fall on my face. So I agree with dark's pyhsic lesson Grin

DarkRoomDarren · 25/03/2018 19:52

HildaZelda · 25/03/2018 21:23

I'm only 5 3", so I'd be lost without heels. Generally a 4" pair, but I do have a few pairs of 6 inchers.

You need to walk heel-toe heel-toe, as Bart here demonstrates:

Hispterwannabe · 25/03/2018 21:51

I don’t feel fully dressed without heels, in work, out at a bar or even shopping. I have recently invested in some flat Jimmy Choos which I love and have also bought some fashion trainers (this seems like the sensible option when pregnant). I do find that certain heels hurt me, my 120 Loobs are very painful and can only be worn for dinner but most heels I find fairly comfortable. Gel party pads help.

PasstheStarmix · 25/03/2018 21:54

Wedges are my best friend. A heel but super comfortable at the same time.
