How to choose glasses colour?

TheEndOfTheBottle · 22/03/2018 15:38

I have the choice of dark green/anthracite or a reddish brown frames.

DH is absolutely no help.
DD likes the dark green
DS likes the reddish brown.
FIL likes the dark green, MIL the brown.
I don't particularly like either

I suppose the dark ones will go better with all colours?

What we do is buy the frames online: DH likes Persol and I have Dior, and DD has Celine, and our local optician does our prescriptions and provides the lenses. There are huge savings to be made on line if you know which frames you want. We try them on elsewhere! DH’s overall cost went from over £500 (Specsavers joke price) to just under £300 and he has fairly complex lenses. I would shop around for the frames but have a very good optician for the lenses and get the thinnest you can get.

Extra thick lens wearer here too I moved from Specsavers to asda and saved £300 as asda do the thinnest possible lens as standard!

My dd is -18 (-5 is no way a 'strong' prescription to the pp upthread!) we tried the 'geek chic' frames they looked awful !! Strong prescriptions over -10 are so tricky to get right. Op I think the style you have chosen at the top of the thread is a great choice my dd has to stick the thin small frames like these or they risk looking very bottle like - and that's with them being thinned down as much as possible
My son meanwhile on a -4 looks great with chunky frames but that's the difference in prescription

I’m not understanding how a thinner frame looks better with thick lenses, than a thicker frame. I agree with pp that the frame style is dated and I think there are loads of nicer frames out there, but that said, I do still see people wearing that kind of frame so it’s like everything, personal taste.

TheEndOfTheBottle · 23/03/2018 08:27

A thick frame is supposed to hide the lenses. So when it doesn't hide them because they are still far larger than the thick frame, it just accentuates them.

I also smile when people tell me they have such strong prescription and then it turns out it's only -4.5!

I'm slightly swayed to the reddish one this morning...

I think the colours are both fine, but I don’t really think the shape is flattering. They seem to be sitting so that they just cover the top of your eyes and extend below it, which will have the effect of making your face looked slightly dragged down and droopy if you know what I mean. I also agree with others that a thicker frame might be better.

If you want to find out whether your skin is cool toned/warm toned, the easy way is just to look at the veins on the back of your wrist. If they are blue then you are cool toned, if they are green then that means you have more yellow in your skin and are warm toned, if you are in between blue and green then you are neutral. Then you can look up colours for your skin type. I’d recommend doing this, as it has made it so much easier for me to work out whether something will suit me before trying it on.

Dont you get a discount if you px is above 10? A freind told me about this

Mine is a mere -7......

MsHomeSlice · 23/03/2018 09:33

Yes, todamhottoday for your complex prescription needs the NHS will give you a complex lens voucher to the princely value of £14.60 per pair.
Disclaimer: give or take a few pennies....they may have upgraded it in the last 12 months.

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 23/03/2018 09:40

I imagine 7mm on a prescription that strength is already with the lense ultra thinned?

Agree Asda could be worth checking out. They seem to work out the cheapest for strong or complicated lenses.

Also like a pp I think you should be getting part of your cost covered by NHS due to being over -10. Worth looking into.

Personally I think the frames are a little too wide on your face. Do they do a similar style in a teen range?

Also the red stands out too much, green blends with your face better. I think it's more important to blend them with your face when lenses are super thick.

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 23/03/2018 09:41

msHome is that all it is?!

TheEndOfTheBottle · 23/03/2018 09:51

Yes, ultra thinned lenses. Of course, the hardest thing is actually imagining what the glasses will look like with the lenses in... Gah. 3 hours to decide.

yup, if you do not get any other benefits to qualify you for a standard NHS voucher which will go from £37 up to £210 ish depending on prescription then £14 is it for your dreadfully shortsighted mere mortal.
