How to choose glasses colour?

TheEndOfTheBottle · 22/03/2018 15:38

I have the choice of dark green/anthracite or a reddish brown frames.

DH is absolutely no help.
DD likes the dark green
DS likes the reddish brown.
FIL likes the dark green, MIL the brown.
I don't particularly like either

I suppose the dark ones will go better with all colours?

Here you go BubblesBuddy. These are my old glasses - an oval shape. So if they were round, the edges of the lenses would be thicker all the way round and not just at the arms.

The green/anthracite ones look fractionally better.

I'm a recent convert addict to buying a range of cheap frames online in addition to my 'main' glasses so I have a choice of colours and styles. My prescription is quite high, but not complex (single vision distance lenses) so this works for me - I appreciate it wouldn't work so well for complex prescriptions.

LexieLulu · 22/03/2018 21:00

OP I have quite a strong prescription so my lenses are thick. The key is not to get massive glasses... the bigger the lens the thicker they get at the outside.

So you know what your prescription is? I'm about -5.5 and have plastic framed glasses

LexieLulu · 22/03/2018 21:02

The plastic frame hides the thick lenses better than metal think frames

If you want larger, metal framed glasses, have you considered thin or ultra thin lenses?

LexieLulu · 22/03/2018 21:05

These are my second frames (specsavers BOGOF), cause they are so much bigger than my other pair the lens gets really thick at the putter edges

Each lens will be about £320 so buying a range is not an option!

Round spec actually tend to have a smaller blank size so = thinner lenses. But you can have bevel frames ( designed for smaller size ) also look at wolf eyewear. William Morris, lafont. Oliver peoples. Well made smaller frames designed to take higher prescriptions. Colour wise try to match your eyes/hair and skin tone so browns rather than pinks. A good independent optician will spend time with you looking at double asperics and thin lenses with correct sized lenses.

MsHomeSlice · 22/03/2018 21:07

I think you need to do some shopping around.

you obviously have a high minus prescription and tbh metal frames are really not the best for that...thick lens edge, and barely 1-2 mm of frame to hide it

what you need to consider is a more regular shape, rectangular shapes like the frame you are trying on will give you a burly lens at the temples, but thin top and bottom. You don't want to go giant, but there is plenty of choice around in more modern styles in small to medium shapes
AND a plastic frame has a heavier rim, which hides the lens edge more effectively.

Also worth while thinking about thinner lenses for a neater finish....or at least an antireflection coat to combat the bottle bottom effect.

i'll try and post a pic of my -8.00 in a 51 size frame from glassesdirect.!

koalab · 22/03/2018 21:08

Do you have the lenses thinned? I have mine thinned to the max level and it allows me to have a bigger lense. I've always been advised to go for plastic frames too to hide the thickness of the lense.

ScreamingValenta · 22/03/2018 21:09

£320 per lens! Yes, I see now why you're only buying one pair!

Itmakesthereaderreadon · 22/03/2018 21:09

I went totally out of my comfort zone (slight cat's eye) and for black framed full geek. They're, weirdly, the most flattering pair I own. I never, ever would have thought it.

MsHomeSlice · 22/03/2018 21:11

Here... Much more edge coverage

Look at Mr Spex online. I found some frames I liked in boots after having my eyes tested at spec savers.

I then Googled the frame designer and model and bought them for £122 instead of £279.

Really detailed frame measurements online so you can compare what you know suits you with the dimensions online.

They will send you four pairs (unglazed) to try on at home free.

MsHomeSlice · 22/03/2018 21:12

seriously you need to shop around.

you can do much much better than that price wise for -10s and get a free pair too in most places

ButtertubsPass · 22/03/2018 21:12

Oh and I went for mid blue frames and dark red frames, something I never imagined but a darker frame looked really harsh against my pale skin.

TheEndOfTheBottle · 22/03/2018 21:17

Those are thinnest possible lenses for my prescription. I have a very similar shape at the moment and they are just over 5mm thick. I have had plastic frames before, but they don't seem to hide it, rather accentuate how thick the lenses are. Probably because you'd think they should be hidden by the thick frames, but aren't.

Both eyes -10 here atm. I have been wearing metal frames for quite a while, but I bought a pair with plastic Ray-Ban frames last year - a small frame, so the lenses don't protrude much, and I luuurve them. They're dark tortoiseshell on the outside and lilac on the inside. The model number is RB5150 5240 if you want to have a look.

LexieLulu · 22/03/2018 21:55

@MsHomeSlice how do you find glasses direct?

I bought some glasses about four years ago from them and I don't know why, they gave me awful headaches. I could see out of them fine, my prescription was correct, but constant headaches.

I've not delved back since, but the email offers always make me want to!

MsHomeSlice · 22/03/2018 22:00

i use the MN discount offer they did recently and specs are fine. Just two of the cheapo ones, but I got one pair tinted, and the everyday ones with an antireflection coat

would def use again, no headaches or anything

I keep meaning to go into my old work and double check everything, and I do need to tighten the sides a little but they are excellent considering it was £40ish for the two :o

hidengosqueak · 22/03/2018 22:07

Can I just say at -10D or above you are part of a protected group and should only be dispensed by a qualified optician. There's a reason for this, extra measurements are essential so as not to cause further problems.
For the poster who said their online specs give them headaches that may be because they weren't dispensed correctly pupil measurements in the frame need to be done exactly or you may be looking through the wrong part of the lens !

ScreamingValenta · 22/03/2018 22:07

I also got some from Glasses Direct with the MN discount, and have bought more since and I'm very happy with them. I find no difference in the standard of vision from my usual glasses.

LookyLooky · 22/03/2018 22:08

Both the colors look lovely and I like the style.

I get all my glasses at ASDA opticians. They ar3 amazing value but I don’t know if they would be good if you have a strong prescription.
