best shampoo for teen with sleek/greasy hair

chocolateiamydrug · 16/03/2018 20:35

DD is a teen and her hair gets greasy 2 -3 days after washing. She has shoulder length sleek and straight hair.

I have 3c curls which are dry and frizzy. Sleek and greasy hair is a whole new world to me. I never imaged sleek hair to be difficult but here I am.

Any recommendations for shampoo? I cannot seem to be able to find shampoo for greasy hair on the shelves. Help!

I have dead straight and greasy hair. Vosene is good, with conditioner every other wash.

TacoFlavouredKisses · 16/03/2018 20:56

Dry shampoo in between washes might help absorb the grease?

Qvar · 16/03/2018 21:00

Alberto balsam Apple shampoo is good. it does leave it quire silky still, and she may still need to wash every day as my son does, but it does work for 24 hours on him and he's VERY greasy, the poor boy

Qvar · 16/03/2018 21:01

btw 2 or 3 days of not washing is what's making her hair greasy. It does need to be every day with that kind of hair. Mine is a twice a week loose rough curl like yours, but my son needs to wash his daily

dementedpixie · 16/03/2018 21:02

Should she not be washing it every 2-3 days anyway? That's how often dd does hers

dementedpixie · 16/03/2018 21:03

Over washing can also cause greasy hair

Qvar · 16/03/2018 21:06

SO can underwashing fine straight hair, and puberty, both of which is going on here

A daily wash with a mild shampoo is not overwashing for fine, greasy, adolescent hair

Qvar · 16/03/2018 21:06

Whereas it utterly destroys mine, and as you say, causes root greasiness with frizzled ends

Littlelambpeep · 16/03/2018 21:08

Greasy hair needs washing it daily

Something clarifying / I use t gel for greasy hair

Lifeaback · 16/03/2018 21:11

Ignore other posters advice about washing every day- this will strip her hair of oils and cause the sebaceous glands to secrete more oils to compensate, resulting in even greasier hair.

Buy vosene shampoo for her and tell her to continue washing every 3 days. Other than that, dry shampoo or talcum powder on the greasy days. Hopefully after puberty it will start to settle down a bit for her

dementedpixie · 16/03/2018 21:11

No way could i get dd to wash hers every day. Takes forever to dry it too

Qvar · 16/03/2018 21:18

Lifeaback, my advice is as viable as yours, there's no need to instruct op to "ignore everyone except me!" unless you're an expert hairdresser. Are you?

MinnieMinchkin · 16/03/2018 23:59

I spent a very uncomfortable 15 months trying to train my hair to only need washing every 2 or 3 days. Going back to washing every day has made me and my hair so much happier Grin I'm lucky to have fine hair that dries quickly, so it's not a major ordeal.

Can your DD not wash more often, just a tiny bit of shampoo on the scalp only and plenty of conditioner at the ends?

I use SLS shampoo but try to avoid silicones in conditioner as it weighs my hair down and makes it greasier more quickly.

drigon · 17/03/2018 00:05

I use Alberto tea tree shapoo on my greasy hair and it usually lasts 1.5 to 2 days before greasing up again. Lemon Head and Shoulders is also good.

Tantpoke · 17/03/2018 00:09

Sadly she will need to be washing her hair far more often than you.

If she wants to wear it down then she'll more than likely need to wash it every morning, otherwise she'll have to wear it up like the rest of us with similar hair and invest in some batiste dry shampoo.

PickAChew · 17/03/2018 00:16

2-3 days is a long time between Washing. In my late 40s 2 days is beyond reasonable.

The best shampoo is one that will be useful willingly. Ds1 like s the lush solid shampoo and conditioner bars.

BillywigSting · 17/03/2018 00:37

Mine is very fine, soft and thick.

It's lovely when it's clean. But it does need washing every other day and putting up at night otherwise it becomes greasy and lank very quickly.

Alberto balsam apple or tea tree are good, and conditioner only on the very ends. Blow dry the roots upside down with a bit of mousse to give a bit of volume and keep hair off the scalp a bit. I find putting mousse or hairspray on clean hair tends to hold back the oil slick for a bit longer than bare hair.

Try not to touch it, oils from hands can grease fine hair up quickly, and keep off the face as hair touching the forehead also greases up more quickly.

Every three days isn't often enough for fine greasy hair though.

Washing it more often isn't going to make it produce more oils, the scalp already makes plenty, you will just be washing away the excess which is perfectly healthy. Excess washing is more likely to cause dandruff than greasy hair, but if you use a mild shampoo it shouldn't be a problem.

thiskittenbarks · 17/03/2018 01:02

I had v greasy hair as a teen (less so now in my 30s but still oily) and I tried washing it less but it just gave me spots where greasy hair was touching my skin. I found washing every other day worked well with wearing it up so it didn't touch my face on the not clean day and the spots disappeared.
I may be "stripping" my hair but very greasy hair really can cope with this. I used to bleach the crap out of it and it was still in beautiful condition and down to my bellybutton.
Shampoo wise I found anything for greasy hair made mine worse. I found Lush or kerastase shampoos work the best in terms of keeping grease at bay

Frequency · 17/03/2018 01:08

There's actually no right or wrong frequency for washing hair, it all depends on your hair type and preference. I have fine, oily hair and cannot wash less than every other day by midday on the second day, my hair is limp, flat and starting to feel heavy at the roots, though looking okayish. At the end of day 2, it is an oily mess. If I left it a third day it would be so greasy, it would look wet.

I've suffered depression in the past and gone for weeks without washing or brushing my hair and it hasn't changed my hair or skin type.

If you have normal skin, over washing may cause an overproduction of sebum if you use harsh detergents but if you have oily skin, you have that anyway, it won't make a difference.

OP - look for something citrussy or with camomile and get your dd to use less friction when washing her scalp. Only apply shampoo to the roots and conditioner to the ends, and avoid the temptation to use harsh shampoos like Vosene. Condition at every wash.

Dry shampoo is an option for second day hair but I find it v heavy and uncomfortable on my fine to medium hair.

halfwitpicker · 17/03/2018 01:15

I've got greasy hair and the only solution for me is to wash it every other day.

I rotate between Johnson's baby shampoo, Redken Cleansing Creme, Alberto Balsam Tea Tree Tingle, Crabtree and Evelyn Seaweed shampoo for greasy hair.

Leaving it for three days won't reduce the grease, it'll just look a state. Chip pan head a go go.

halfwitpicker · 17/03/2018 01:17

A tip is to wash the hair twice I. E use a blob of shampoo, lather, rinse, then wash again with more shampoo in the same shower session. It lasts longer that way.

YimminiYoudar · 17/03/2018 03:06

It is NOT true that greasy hair needs washing daily. Daily washing makes the problem worse as it will stimulate grease production.

Washing every 2-3 days is best practice for greasy hair and there is no shampoo in the world that will "last longer" to stretch this to more.

What will make a difference would be your dd learning to do a proper thorough scalp massage each wash. Just lathering the hair and rinsing off is not enough. Making sure every inch of scalp is properly massaged will keep the grease at bay. Also doing a "pre-wash" before the massage will help (ie lather away the existing grease, rinse away, then apply more shampoo for a main wash and scalp massage)

Use dry shampoo between washes if needed.

ShovingLeopard · 17/03/2018 03:27

I have very greasy hair, and have to wash it every day, or it is a lank, greasy, itchy mess by lunchtime on day two. I find a quick wash every morning with a moisturising shampoo for dry hair (so as not to over-dry the scalp and cause the oil glands to ramp up production even more) is the best method for me. I like the blue OGX shampoo, which I find doesn't weight more hair down. Keep conditioner away from roots.

cookingachristmasturkey · 17/03/2018 04:40

I have greasy hair like this, and since age 11 have had to wash everyday.

I KNOW that this is absolutely the right thing ans that my greasyness is simply my body reacting to hormones and not overwashing, as both times i have been pregnant my greasy hair has disappeared. My hormones changed and i was able to go three days without washing (bliss), but with no change of routine to cause this miracle.

I really believe that some hair needs more washing and no training will help. Let's be honest she is effectively training it now if she isn't washing often, but its still greasy.

Bringonspring · 17/03/2018 04:50

My hair has always needed washing every day seen puberty, I never really got the ‘it makes it worst’
